August Dev Update - New team members and Stage 3 begins
We stayed quiet through most of August, heads down on our Screen Australia grant application, which is now submitted! A new creative director joined the team, Stage 3 moved from prototype into production, and Stage 2 continued to receive playtest-driven polish. The road to Early Access is firmly on track, and you can read all about it below.A Major Grant ApplicationWe submitted a thorough application to Screen Australia’s Games Production Fund and we're really excited regardless of the outcome. It's helped clarify our thinking, polish our roadmap and raise our professionalism to a standard that ensures our vision will be realized.Siobhan Davis joined as creative directorSiobhan Davis is now the third name on FOXFIRE, contracted as creative director from August 2026. Art direction, the style guide, the enemy bestiary across stages, hull and weapon art, interface art, pilot animation and weapon-evolution animation are all being revamped under her experienced direction. Siobhan brings the requisite skill-set to take FOXFIRE to the next level. Bridging the quality gap between our strong movement and systems and some of the earlier visual placeholders and prototypes.Stage 3, the Ark Heist, is in productionStage 3 has sat as an in-engine prototype for months. More of a floor plan we could walk through than a stage you could play on, but as of September through November it is going full throttle. It's called the Ark Heist, and it's the point of the campaign where we stop running and fly right into the thick of the action. Unique to space Survivor-likes, this stage involves flying through a maze of procedural generated compartments within a heavily defended space hulk. Stage 2 Play & PolishThe Viridian Storm, Stage 2, is still undergoing vigorous testing and showing signs of increased player engagement. Offscreen indicators are getting clearer. The mid-run camera behaviours that surprised new players are being smoothed. The playtest cohort keeps finding a handful of things t...Read full article on Community Announcements (SnowSStorm)Patch NotesOfficial
July Dev Update — Two weeks off & notes from 50+ playthroughs
I took two weeks off. Before leaving, we put a playtest build in players' hands and left it running. We came back to a host of recorded playthroughs and a stack of notes in the Discord, and one signal came through louder than the rest. Stage 1 is awesome and addictive, Stage 2, the Viridian Storm, was too hard. Not hard-interesting. Hard-unfair. So most of the month went into fixing that, plus a few extras. We made the Viridian Storm fight fair. The Viridian Storm was landing on players like a brick wall—waves stacking on waves with no room to read them. We rebuilt how the whole stage schedules its threats. The lesson we kept coming back to is already codified in Stage 1 - introduce one thing at a time.Threats now arrive one family at a time, each with a breather behind it, so you're solving one problem instead of three at once.Elites hit softer and slower through the early minutes. The offscreen beam gauntlets wait until they actually have line of sight before they open up, and they're capped so the screen can't drown. It’s still our hardest stage yet, but there is nothing more satisfying than watching a Mega Beamer disintegrate its own brethren.Cyrex got a real fightCyrex is what waits at the end of Viridian Storm. An agile slasher tyrant with a proper attack combo, a beam, and a phase change where he lobs an egg across the arena. And you can hit him where it counts: shots register against his skull, claws, abdomen and tail instead of one floating hitbox, so aiming for the exposed part is a real decision. Closer to a Diablo 2 boss than a survivor-like damage sponge. You can find the eye nowThe Viridian Storm is built around its Eye—a moving safe zone you want to track. Finding it used to mean squinting at an off-screen arrow that looked like three other cues. Which is a fair moment to admit that at one point the storm's lightning, the reward ring, your shield, the XP gems and the level-up sigil were all drawn as blue hexagons of slightly different sizes. We pulled th...Read full article on Community Announcements (SnowSStorm)Patch NotesOfficial
June Dev Update — a big month and three days at Supanova Sydney
The first of many. We’ll try and knock out a devlog the last Friday of each month. We’re fresh off three days Supanova Sydney, handing the controller to people who'd never touched FOXFIRE and watching exactly where they got it and where they didn't. Amazing feedback, amazing vibe and amazing people. We’re grateful for all the playtesting and a 90+ improvement list at the end. A special shoutout to Spiderman and Batman, playing in full costume isn’t easy considering you’re in walking sauna suits! A new course: The ChicaneFlight Training is FOXFIRE's time-trial mode — no enemies, just a ship and a clock. This month it got a second course, with the speed ceiling taken off entirely for some sections. It makes returning to normal speed a real skill to get the best time, plus it looks hilarious. Closer to a Wipeout time trial than to anything in the survivor-like genre. Viridian Storm grew teethStage 2 — the Viridian Storm — got the most work. Multiple beam artillery emplacements now fire from off the edge of the screen simultaneously, telegraphed across two terrifying beats. Playtesting is due to open in about two weeks, just before the dev goes on holiday! Play it one-handed!Two accessibility systems went in. Full input rebinding and per-controller profiles, and a one-button mode that long-presses to select and auto-cycles focus — so the whole game is playable from a single input. FOXFIRE's auto-fire and facing-aim already did a lot of the work here; this closes the gap and is now going into playtesting.Pick your opening weaponLaunch loadout now lets you choose the weapon you start a run with, unlocked after your first run. It's a small change, but will have a large impact on player freedom and opening builds. We don't want to gate fun by tying the weapon loadout to other conditions. Pilots will also offer their own unique bonuses and secrets.Plus a heap of QoL, Level Up Card clarity improvements and more...CheersTom & OllieRead full article on Community Announcements (SnowSStorm)AnnouncementsOfficial
