Navigate through asteroid fields, crack open rocks for treasure, and defend against alien raiders in Mega Roids. Developed by PSD Labs LLC, this fast-paced retro arcade shooter challenges you across three escalating stages.

About this game

MEGA ROIDS

A frantic first-person retro arcade shooter where the asteroids you blast create the chaos you have to survive.

You're Jack, the newest contractor for the ACME Space Mining Company. The pay is too good to be true: a cut of every asteroid core you recover. Your first shift drops you into a sealed ACME Hyper-Toroidal Space Bubble in an unfamiliar NESDA Mining Spacecraft 4000x — and the alien raider known as the Head wants those cores back.

THREE ESCALATING STAGES, ONE CONTINUOUS LOOP

Lives and score carry across every stage. Clear all three and the loop restarts — harder, faster, deadlier.

Stage 1 — Roid Blaster

  • Free-roam a wrap-around asteroid field and crack rocks open for treasure.

  • Fend off green and blue alien raiders that hunt your loot.

  • Manage your engine heat — push too hard and you'll overheat and stall.

  • Fill the portal and punch through to the next stage.

Stage 2 — Roid Run

  • A white-knuckle first-person canyon flight where one wall is instant death.

  • Blast wall, rim, and mid-wall turrets and grab high-value orb targets.

  • Thread the exit portal at speed — or start the run over.

Stage 3 — Mega Roids

  • Orbit the massive alien Head and shatter its rotating 80-panel shield.

  • Punch missiles through the gaps to hammer the Head itself.

  • Dodge charged eye missiles and a barrage of spat asteroids.

FEATURES

  • Pure score attack — bonus life every 5,000 points, score cap 999,999,999.

  • Steam Leaderboards — climb to the top and defend your run.

  • 32 Steam Achievements to chase.

  • Full controller support plus keyboard.

  • Native Windows & Linux builds (Steam Deck playable).

  • Family Sharing supported.

  • Free demo — try Stage 1 before you buy.

BLAST. LOOP. BEAT THE HEAD!

Crack the roids, claim the cores, survive the raiders, and make it out with your cut of the profits.

Meet Jack — The Story Behind Mega Roids (Now In-Game)

Today's update adds an opening story crawl to Mega Roids, so now there's a reason you're out there blasting rocks. Meet Jack. — Jack's First Shift — Jack never expected ACME Space Mining Company to hire him. Who knows how many applicants he'd had to beat. Hundreds. Maybe thousands! Probably because everyone he asked said the pay was too good to be real. Oh, it was real all right: a small percentage of the mining profits! His first assignment sounded simple enough — enter an ACME Hyper-Toroidal Space Bubble (whatever that is), blast open the asteroids inside it, and collect their valuable cores. Once he meets the quota, ACME opens a portal on the edge of the Bubble to exit through, and then he continues to the planet's surface, descending into Qob Canyon for core extraction. The only worry was the ship. Jack had never actually flown a NESDA Mining Spacecraft 4000x before. Still, the flight simulations during the interview had all gone well, so it shouldn't be that hard. He climbed into the cockpit, sealed the hatch, and started his first shift — unaware he wouldn't be alone out there for long... — What's new in this update — New opening story crawl (skippable with Space or gamepad A) Expanded victory screen after you destroy the Head — see your run stats before the loop escalates Stability and gameplay fixes on Windows and Linux Blast the asteroids, then survive the chaos you create. Mega Roids is a $3.99 first-person retro arcade shooter — play now, or try the free demo.

    Display Fixes & Linux Support

Patch Notes 🖥️ Display Improvements Widescreen & Non-4:3 Display Support — The game now correctly letterboxes or pillarboxes on displays that aren't 4:3, preserving the intended aspect ratio instead of stretching. Viewport rect is now cached and only recalculated on resize, improving rendering performance. Fixed an issue where querying display pixel size immediately after entering fullscreen could return incorrect dimensions — the game now pumps SDL events first to ensure accurate output. Fixed an edge case where the logical presentation could cause stretching artifacts by switching to SDL_SetRenderLogicalPresentation. 🐧 Linux Support Linux/Debian builds are now officially supported! The game can be compiled and run on Linux via CMake. Bundled GLM headers are now used, removing a broken external dependency fetch. A Linux README has been added with build instructions. 🔧 Bug Fixes & Code Quality Fixed build errors and warnings in the pixel rendering pipeline. Extracted the DISPLAY_ASPECT constant to a shared header for consistency across the codebase.

Optimizations enabled for the Linux build: -O3 full optimization pass-march=native / -mtune=native — tuned to your CPU at install time where supported-ffast-math — precision trade-off for maximum throughput on math-heavy renderingLink-Time Optimization (LTO) — cross-translation-unit inlining for a leaner, faster binaryReal-time thread scheduling — the game requests SCHED_FIFO at startup for frame-consistent timing 🏆...

Rear-View Camera, Glass Break Death Screen & Gameplay Polish

What's New 🎥 Rear-View Camera The attitude indicator has been replaced with a live rear-view camera — a true 3D perspective view of what's behind you. Roid Blaster / Mega Roids: See nebulae, asteroids, aliens, missiles, and treasures rendered as lit 3D geometry behind your ship. Roid Run: A telephoto view of the canyon behind you with sky/ground gradient and perspective-correct walls. 💀 New Death Transition All three game modes now share a unified glass-break death screen — your view shatters when you die, followed by a flashing GAME OVER animation before the scoreboard. 🛡️ Roid Blaster: Spawn Protection You're now invulnerable for 3 seconds after spawning or respawning. A gold blinking overlay fades out as the protection window ends so you always know when you're exposed. Balance Changes Mega Roids: Shield triangles reduced from 4 hits to 3 hits to destroy — faster, more aggressive combat. Mega Roids Boss: HP reduced from 25 to 20 hits. Roid Run: Enemy turret missile speed increased by 8%. Roid Blaster: Ship turn speed increased by 8%. Green aliens are now 20% larger — harder to miss, harder to ignore. Audio Alien sound redesign: richer FM vibrato warble with a punchier pulse envelope and better distance falloff. Missiles that hit your cockpit now trigger a distinct impact sound. Visual & HUD Polish Improved canyon wall rendering in Roid Run. HUD indicator shine repositioned to upper-left for a more natural look. Alien AI no longer wastes shots on asteroids already on a collision course with the player.
