Explore a vast star sector as The Last Captain, directly controlling your ship’s arsenal and upgrades. Navigate dynamic missions, upgrading with rewards to dominate fleet combat.

About this game

Welcome to the Pyre Sector

Betrayed. Ambushed. Erased. After your trade convoy is decimated, you reach port only to find all your records expunged. As the Captain of the sole surviving ship, you must navigate the Pyre Sector, a frontier of rival superpowers, rogue warlords, and deadly secrets, to track down those who left you for dead.

  • Dynamic Campaign: Explore multiple varied star systems that change on each playthrough. Locations have salvage, unique mission opportunities, or, if you’re unlucky, ambushes!

  • Meaningful Factions: Complete missions and build relations with factions. Unlock unique weapons, gain access to allied facilities, and bring allies into critical engagements. Be wary, hostile factions may actively post mercenary bounties on you.

  • Standing Fleets: Allied and hostile fleets are visible on the starmap, allowing you to carefully choose your next move. Certain missions can even have multiple factions fighting over critical assets.

  • Unique Enemies: Start the fight with or against scrappy pirates, resourceful independents, and versatile mercenaries, each with their own assortment of equipment, ships, and fleet doctrine. Move on to dealing with the Coalition, the Phoenix Empire, and an elusive, technologically superior threat.

Master the Art of Ship-to-Ship Warfare

In the Pyre Sector, victory isn't about who opens fire first; it's about who controls the battlefield. Last Captain demands tactical foresight in every engagement.

  • Balance Offense: Choose when to defend against missiles with point defense, or switch to the attack with your own long-ranged weaponry.

  • Control the Battlefield: Deploy point-defense satellites to create safe zones, and use EMP bursts to disable tracking on inbound missiles.

  • Lethal Environments: You can mask your signature in ion storms, dodge meteor showers, and even attempt to ram enemy ships into the unstoppable clutches of a black hole.

  • Scale of Conflict: Evolve your tactics from tense 1v1 duels to massive fleet engagements with ships of different roles and sizes.

Squadron Co-op Missions

Take on the most dangerous threats alone or with up to three other Captains. Supercharge your squadron’s strengths and cover each other’s weaknesses against increasingly difficult odds.

  • Loadout Synergy: Coordinate your loadouts. Have one player draw fire with a high-armor, close combat build while another provides long-range railgun and missile support.

  • High-Stakes Objectives: From high-speed convoy escorts and daring pirate nest raids to multi-stage star fortress assaults, every mission demands a new strategy.

  • In-Depth Progression: Hard-earned rewards allow you to modify every aspect of your ship. Tweak your weapon ballistics, install unstable fuel injectors for burst mobility, or reinforce your hull for ramming maneuvers.

  • Ship Evolution: Optimize your ship or swap out the chassis entirely across different ship classes. Start as a nimble frigate and upgrade to durable cruisers or even the venerable battleship class.

Player vs Player Combat

Test your battle-hardened skills against other players and their unique armaments.

  • Deathmatch: The classic duel that rewards steady aim, sharp instincts, and countering your enemies’ attacks while unleashing your own. With no ship upgrades available, this is the purest combat experience.

  • Station Assault: A team-based mode that requires coordination and tactics to blast through hostile defenses and take out their station before they destroy yours. Teamfights change the paradigm and incentivize harder-to-counter, varied loadouts.

  • Fleet Battle: Capture critical locations on the battlefield with the help of allied NPC ships and full ship customization. Control the chaos as fleet lines collide in this battle of increasingly epic proportions.

Dev Log #7 - Preparing for our Public Demo and Release

So much to talk about!Greetings captains! It's been a busy few months here at Shrimp Fried Games, as we've been heads down to get the public demo out and prep for a 2026 game release (if all goes well!).There's too much awesome new content and feature additions to talk about, but I'll do my best!NPC Fleets and BehaviorsFirst off, NPC ships now often travel as fleets in specific formations. Everything from small 3-frigate scout fleets to battleship-led battle forces, these ships now stay in formation and prove much more difficult to fight against than lone ships trickling in one at a time. It also looks awesome. Most of the time, fleets will break formation when combat truly starts and carefully plodding ship formations descend into the chaos of battle. Below you can see the beginning of a pirate fleet running headfirst into a Coalition task force. This also means that missions where you either have to attack or defend transports feature guards that escort them from close range and will intercept any missiles you send their way, making those fights much more dynamic.Additionally, fleets apply to the player as well! In the Campaign, as you earn the respect of allies or simply pay for mercenary support, you can bring in allied ships to help you with challenging missions. This means instead of approaching solo against an entire fleet, you can assemble your allies Avengers-Endgame style to go up against the big bad ;)A pirate fleet in all its plundering glory. That's not all, NPC ships also continue to go to flight school and level up. In addition to using special equipment like flares, point-defense turrets, and EMPs, they can now use their boost and attempt to self-repair when out of combat. This makes your allies more capable and your enemies trickier to take out.A pirate battleship engaging at close range vs an Imperial frigate. New NPC Ships and Ship RolesWith the introduction of fleets, most NPC ships have specific roles. Previously, we had frigates and cruisers in th...

Dev Log #6 - Showing Off the New Aesthetics

Greetings captains!Instead of a feature deep dive, I wanted to showcase a whole bunch of upcoming visual improvements in the lead-up to the new playtest and the wrap-up of game development. Be ready for a very visuals-heavy dev log! AestheticsIn addition to wrapping up game systems, I've made a few passes at in-battle rendering with a focus on lights, effects, and the backgrounds. As a result, battles should feel much more lifelike. Take this new screenshot for example.Global LightingFirst off, lighting has been completely overhauled. The Last Captain has switched away from the camera's default auto-exposure values and manually adjusted them so that different levels have drastically different moods. The space backgrounds have also been updated to much higher fidelity. Just compare these two images of the same battle in different lighting conditions: Individual Ship LightingAll ships and stations in the game are receiving a lighting pass to support a much more dynamic look. The individual ship lights will be much more obvious when fighting in many of the new, darker space battlefields. They are carefully placed to make sure performance remains high even on lower-end PCs.Before Ship Specific Lighting After Ship Specific LightingShip TurningShips now actually turn into the direction they're going, which makes both the player's ship and NPC ships feel much more dynamic.AtmosphereA bit strange mentioning this one, considering there is no atmosphere in space. Nevertheless, different environments have varying levels of dust and particles in vacuum, leaving even space environments feeling a bit "foggy" for lack of a better word. That, and we're adding in fights in the ominous upper layers of gas giants...That's all for now! As usual, there is much more to show off. Until then, I'm curious, what do you like the most about these new changes? What are you hoping to see? Let me know, and I might just be able to fit them in before launch :)

    Dev Log #5 - Shields

Since our last updateHey everyone! Been a quiet (but busy) couple of months here at Shrimp Fried Games. First of all, if you haven't seen our new trailer yet:Those who have been following us for a little while might have noticed two new interesting additions. Ships now have shields, and there is officially a fourth faction 👀We'll spotlight our mysterious new faction at a later date, though know that they are a core part of The Last Captain story and feature heavily in the campaign. In the meantime...Shields!Yes, shields are officially in the game! A core staple of many Sci-Fi franchises, shields provide a visually distinct protective layer around ships and drastically increase their longevity. When approaching shields for Last Captain, I wanted to make sure that they: Had a unique lookWere not just a second healthbarGenerally made the game more interestingIn progress shieldsNote how the first shield wraps around the ship very closely, versus the bubble-like effects of the other shields. This shield is close to the final effect, though I had to make some rendering pipeline changes to remove the dithering side-effect.So how do they work? Most ships have a bubble shield that extends protectively around them. It has a certain threshold of damage it can take before it collapses, leaving the ship vulnerable to hull damage.Until the shield is taken down, ships generally won't be damaged by regular weapons. However, ion storms will rapidly damage the shields of any ship entering them, leaving them much more vulnerable than they usually would be. Radiation clouds can also damage ships directly, bypassing their shields.Shields recharge slowly while out of combat or all at once after a delay if they are fully collapsed. This means shields can be slowly whittled down, but there is only a brief window to strike a ship once its shields go down entirely. This is what shields currently look like in-game. An image doesn't quite capture the rippling animation, so keep an eye out for vid...

Dev Log #4 - First look at the Last Captain's campaign

The Last Captain CampaignLong have I waited to start sharing updates around the campaign. It combines the action-packed tactical gameplay of individual missions with the overarching story, the factions, and deep ship customization systems. As we take our first look, please remember the UI is still a work in progress! The StarmapAt the heart of the campaign is the Starmap - a visual center for everything happening in the Pyre sector. The player is thrust into this unstable sector, teeming with various factions that can be fought, negotiated with, or even befriended. From the pragmatic Coalition, to the nefarious pirates, each has their own distinct agenda, culture, and - in combat - their own strategy. While certain factions will remain hostile throughout the duration of the campaign, others will offer missions which will build your reputation with them. High reputation isn't merely a feel good status. Early reputation gain allows the player access to unique weapons and upgrades that are specific to that faction. At higher levels, the player gets access to strategic outposts that can resupply or repair the player's ship. This is critical since resources are much scarcer in the campaign. At even higher levels, factions will provide the player with allied ships to help take on the various threats within the Pyre Sector. At the highest level, the player will be able to plot missions that determine the future of the entire sector.LocationsThe Pyre Sector is composed of multiple star systems, each based around a local point of gravity like a star, binary stars, or even a black hole.Within these systems are a vast array of strategic points with their own history. Oftentimes they are the location of vicious fighting between factions, and they are where the majority of missions take place. (On rare occasions, missions can take place in deep space)Successful completion of missions can help strategic locations change hands. With enough support to a particular faction, entire syste...
