The future of Marathon includes a fungus-filled Perimeter, a social hub, and a shift "beyond extraction"
Marathon will be "growing beyond extraction." That's what Bungie say in a new blog post outlining the future of the shooter, after announcing earlier this week that they'll be bringing back vaulted Destiny 2 campaigns. "Marathon launched as a cutthroat, winner-takes-all PvEvP experience," they explain. "We want to preserve that thrill for the players who enjoy it, while creating more ways for others to experience the world and find the level of challenge that works for them." The Future of Marathon
Hey everyone, thanks for checking in.Since launch, we’ve been reviewing your feedback and taking a hard look at where Marathon needs to go next. We’ve heard from new players who found the game difficult to understand, experienced players who wanted greater clarity about its future, and players who enjoyed what we built but wanted more reasons to keep coming back.We know you expect to hear from us consistently about where Marathon is headed. Today, we want to share more about what the team is building and the vision guiding Marathon’s evolution into 2027.Our next steps begin with the Nightfall Refresh in October, expand significantly with Symbiosis in December, and take another large leap forward with Marathon’s evolution in March.October: A refresh to progression, rewards, and the live experience.December: Symbiosis introduces Marathon’s first permanent PvE experience, an expanded Perimeter, a new shell, improved onboarding, and a social space.March: These pieces come together through connected PvE, PvP, and PvEvP experiences, deeper progression, a refactored Cradle, more narrative, new enemies, and an entirely new zone. And if you haven’t watched or read Josh and Poria’s Next Chapter for Bungie update, we recommend taking a look. What follows is Marathon’s part of that larger conversation.Growing beyond ExtractionMarathon launched as a cutthroat, winner-takes-all PvEvP experience. We want to preserve that thrill for the players who enjoy it, while creating more ways for others to experience the world and find the level of challenge that works for them.Disclaimer: The above is a still from an upcoming Symbiosis CG Trailer. Some players want a quick, lower-pressure run after work. Some want to spend an entire night with their crew. Others want to test a build, compete directly against other players, chase a difficult challenge, or follow a strange clue deeper into the ruins of Tau Ceti IV.Marathon needs to support all of them.As we build from Symbiosis toward March and...Read full article on Community Announcements (Marathon_Team)Press Coverage
Bungie decide their destiny is to do more Destiny after all, pledging to bring back vaulted Destiny 2 campaigns while declaring that Marathon "needs to evolve"
Not long after announcing changes to how they'll handle majorly updating Marathon going forwards, Bungie have reversed course on their decision to stop developing Destiny 2 - a move they followed with layoffs. Promising to bring back vaulted bits of Destiny 2 and declaring that the series is "foundational" to their future. A future which they've kicked off with a lot of grovelling for forgiveness. The Next Chapter for Bungie
Hey all, Poria and Josh here. For those who don’t know us, I’m Poria Torkan, Bungie’s Studio Head, and I’m Josh Deane, Head of Product and General Manager of Marathon. Together, we are responsible for leading Bungie and shaping the future of our games.Today, we want to talk candidly about where Bungie is, where Destiny and Marathon need to go, and how we intend to earn back your trust. This is not only an update on our immediate plans. It is the beginning of a more consistent conversation about the future of our games and our studio.First and foremost, we recently sat down to talk through the current state of Bungie and share our vision for the future. The video shares our perspective on where Bungie is today and where we want to go. Below, we’re adding more detail on what that direction means for Destiny, Marathon, and how we intend to communicate about our progress.WHERE BUNGIE IS TODAYBungie has been creating games for over 30 years and we have welcomed the communities that have formed around them. Over the last few years, we lost sight of that, and there have been real consequences. We lost trust, we lost incredible colleagues, and we lost sight of what we should be prioritizing most, our players. As a new leadership team, we must own that. We aren’t just listening to feedback, we understand your disappointment. We are not asking you to trust what we say today. We know that trust must be earned through the quality of our games, the decisions we make, and how consistently we show up for our players. DESTINY IS FOUNDATIONAL TO OUR FUTUREBungie would not be what it is today without Destiny and the vibrant community that has rallied around it for more than a decade. When we announced that Monuments of Triumph would be the final content update to Destiny 2, you responded in force. Your voices mattered, and the way you showed up made a real impact. You reminded everyone how much this world, its history, and its future still mean to you.Destiny is foundational to Bungie...Read full article on Community Announcements (Marathon_Team)
