About this game

Star Wars™: Dark Forces Remaster has been brought to life by the team at Nightdive Studios, fully remastered through its proprietary KEX engine, allowing the game to run on modern gaming devices at up to 4K resolution at 120FPS. New and returning players will enjoy Star Wars: Dark Forces Remaster’s upgraded gameplay, high-resolution textures, enhanced lighting and rendering, and support for gamepads.

The original 1995 Star Wars: Dark Forces raised the bar for FPS games, offering players a significant degree of movement and interactivity, a large selection of items and power-ups, and engaging environments.

In the first Star Wars FPS video game, players assume the role of Kyle Katarn, a defector of the Galactic Empire turned mercenary for hire. Katarn joins the Rebel Alliance’s covert operations division tasked with infiltrating the Galactic Empire, where he discovers the secret Dark Trooper Project. The development of this powerful new series of Imperial battle droids and power-armored stormtroopers stands to strengthen the Empire’s grip on the galaxy unless Katarn and the Rebel Alliance intervene.

Star Wars: Dark Forces Remaster review: a handsome glow-up of LucasArts' classic, if now rather creaky Star Wars FPS

A long time ago on a desktop far, far away, my family once owned a demo disc for the original Star Wars: Dark Forces. I cannot remember for the life of me which level(s) it contained. My only surviving memory of it is having quite a good time blasting Stormtroopers and the chaps in black with the swoopy, knock-off Vader helmets, but also getting terribly lost and not really knowing what the heck I was meant to be doing. Now, playing Nightdive Studio's Star Wars: Dark Forces Remaster as an adult probably close to three decades later, both these feelings have come roaring back, as this is very much a Star Wars FPS in the vein of Doom and other early 90s shooters (thumbs up). But it's one that leans so hard into its maze-like level design that it can regularly feel like a little bit of a tough hang in the cold hard light of 2024 (thumbs down). Crucially, though, not to the point where it's best left consigned to the history books. This is still an enjoyable and worthwhile artefact in Star Wars' PC gaming history, and if your eyes (and general patience levels) can't quite stomach the 'Classic' and still available 1995 original, then this remaster is a pin-sharp glow-up for modern hardware. Star Wars: Dark Forces Remaster coming to consoles and PC in early 2024

Nightdive Studios has announced a release date for Star Wars: Dark Forces Remaster. Announced earlier this year, and releasing in February, Star Wars: Dark Forces Remaster has been fully remastered through the studio's proprietary KEX engine, allowing the game to run on modern devices at up to 4K resolution at 120FPS. The remaster features upgraded gameplay, high-resolution textures, enhanced lighting and rendering, and support for console gamepads with platform-specific features. Originally developed and published by LucasArts, Dark Forces was released in 1995 for DOS and Mac and in 1996 for PlayStation as the first FPS for the series. In it, you take on the role of Kyle Katarn, a defector of the Galactic Empire turned mercenary for hire who joins the Rebel Alliance's covert operations division. Tasked with infiltrating the Galactic Empire, you discover the secret Dark Trooper Project that finds the Empire producing a series of Imperial battle droids and power-armored stormtroopers. It is up to you, Katarn, and the Rebel Alliance to intervene. Read more
