About this game

Return to Nangrim is a dark first-person survival adventure set in an abandoned dwarven world. Explore an ancient mountain kingdom, gather resources, forge tools and weapons, cook, brew, and practice alchemy as you try to reclaim the mountains with your animal companion.

The Mountain Has Fallen Silent

An undying shadow hangs over the mountain like an ancient curse. Decay and bitter cold have spread through the crumbling stone, poisoning the very heart of the earth. Halls that once rang with life now lie silent and broken, buried in a darkness where even echoes seem afraid to linger.

Enter the abandoned mountain realm as a dwarven survivor and descend into a world of cold stone, deep darkness, and forgotten history. Gather what the mountain provides. Prepare your equipment. Reclaim the crafts of your ancestors and discover what brought an entire dwarven civilisation to ruin.

Survive the Depths

Every journey into the depths requires preparation. Darkness, hunger, harsh weather, difficult terrain, and the creatures within the mountain determine how far you can venture and whether you return safely.

Explore deserted halls, mines, and settlements. Search for resources, food, and tools. Plan your routes carefully and learn when it is time to retreat towards the light.

The mountain is not truly empty. Strange creatures have settled in its depths, while shadows have taken hold of its halls. Reclaim the mountain and awaken the fires of its ancient forges.

Axes, hammers, and shields will help you defend yourself. Yet your torch may prove just as valuable. It lights the path ahead and keeps certain dangers at bay.

Master the Crafts of the Dwarves

Survival in Nangrim involves more than gathering whatever you can find. You must learn how to process and refine raw materials, create tools, and prepare supplies for the journeys ahead.

Work the forge and rediscover the ancient smithing techniques of the dwarves. Craft tools, weapons, and equipment, then improve them for longer and more dangerous expeditions. Choose whether a hammer, a battle axe, or another carefully made tool is best suited to the task before you.

Prepare traditional dwarven meals in the tavern, brew beer, and use alchemy to create useful mixtures. Careful preparation allows you to travel farther and endure the depths for longer.

Crafting is not separate from the adventure. It is how you survive the mountain and begin to make it habitable once more.

Explore a Realm Shaped by Dwarven History

Descend through living quarters, workshops, mines, fortresses, and places long forgotten. Every location bears the marks of the generations of dwarves who once lived and worked there.

Architecture, tools, personal belongings, and abandoned workplaces offer fragments of the Stonebeards’ story. The deeper you travel, the more you learn about their final days and the events that silenced Nangrim.

Examine your surroundings, combine the objects you discover, and use the remains of the old civilisation to open new paths. Beyond the direct route lie optional stories, collectibles, and hidden discoveries.

Read What the Mountain Remembers

Hilduir, the runic language of the dwarves, is woven into the world and its history. Learn fragments of the language and use them to interpret inscriptions, symbols, ancient records, and the whispers of the mountain itself.

The knowledge of the Stonebeards was never preserved in a single chronicle. It remains within their halls, upon their tools, and in the signs they left behind. Those who observe closely and learn to understand what they find will uncover far more than those who merely search the ruins.

Return to the Depths

Each expedition leads farther into the abandoned mountain. Return with new resources, stronger equipment, and a deeper understanding of what happened there. Prepare for the next descent and follow the traces of the Stonebeards towards their source.

Explore. Prepare. Forge. Descend. Return with answers. Or do not return at all.

    The Players’ Guild Returns

Hyr Frynbards! Before we dive into today’s announcement, we want to briefly address the long silence around development and communication.Over the past period, Return to Nangrim has undergone internal restructuring and development changes. These shifts were necessary to strengthen the project's foundation, refine our production pipeline, and ensure that the systems we are building can achieve the quality and depth we envision. In addition, two of the founders experienced personal setbacks and changes in their private lives. As a result, they had less time available for development than before. We acknowledge that the communication gap was longer than intended, and we appreciate your patience as we worked through these changes. ❤️ ⚒️⛰️We are now preparing to reopen the Players’ Guild.Community testing through the Players’ Guild will resume in the near future. Selected Guild members will receive focused components and test scenarios. Each test will concentrate on a specific part of Return to Nangrim, often reduced to its core mechanics. This allows testers to examine individual systems, find problems, try unusual approaches, and provide focused feedback before the systems are combined into larger builds.Planned Testing SequenceThe components are currently planned in the following order:Phase I: Interaction and NavigationInventory ManagementReading SystemOrientationCompassMapsMarkersRelated navigation toolsPortals and Level TransitionsPhase II: Crafting, Production and HarvestingForgingAlloyingBrewingCooking and BakingAlchemyHarvestingCultivation systemsWild flora and fungiGathering and resource growth cyclesPhase III: Survival, Excavation and ConstructionHunger, Thirst and SleepWarmth and Sanity ManagementMiningVoxel-based digging systemBuilding SystemRefinement ChainsOre processingMaterial progressionPhase IV: World, Life and Economy SystemsEconomics and TradeCalendar and TimeSeasonsDay and Night CyclesCelestial MechanicsWeather SystemSeasonal ChangesWeather Events, inc...

    Echoes of Yule!

{STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/34704322/4130fde6467544192e670afeae9f7625b565833a.jpg As the year draws to a close, an enchanted aura surrounds these final days. It is a time marked by the Yule tides washing over the northern realms. Cold winds bring snow to the lands, and only the very peaks of the mountains manage to grasp the fleeting rays of the sun. In this season, dwarves gather in their cosy halls, immersing themselves in ancient stories of legendary kings and epic battles. It's a period of rare tranquillity, where the usual clamour of forges is silenced, and the tunnels lie empty, shadowed and quiet. We'd like to seize this moment to express our heartfelt gratitude for your unwavering support. Your solidarity in our shieldwall and companionship on our journey to bring "Return to Nangrim" to life has been invaluable. 🏔️⛏️💎 {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/34704322/4bba909f61979bd999e1f7f95ee961c879d9010a.jpg To celebrate the season of Yule, we're excited to share the Genesis Book with everyone at the Arafinn Kontor. Smelt these ores into pristine metal ingots and be prepared to forge them into instruments of unparalleled power. 🪓 The Forge's Fervor The essence of forging is not just in the metal, but in the heat. Each material demands a specific fervor; a heat so intense that you may need to venture into the treacherous forests for wood, or dive even deeper into the mountain's belly for coal. ⛏️🔥 {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/34704322/542829456852ba1b802734c4684663bd144acbfb.jpg Master the Craft But be wary! Tools deteriorate, especially under the punishing work of a dedicated dwarf. As you integrate more and more materials into your forging processes, the complexity of the crafting recipe increases. Not just skill, but artistry and precision are required. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/34704322/cccdfa8232a51bbc355bd0e50302fd5e37520e76.jpg Forge illustrious hammers, pickaxes, and a myriad of other tools. Stonebeard's Calendar

The world-building in "Return to Nangrim" is not merely about the rich lore, the intricately designed locations, or the challenging environment. It's also about the subtle details that breathe life into the game, such as the ever-changing seasons, the lifelike climate of Ebboria, and the deeply rooted traditions of its former inhabitants, the Stonebeard Dwarves. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/34704322/4db4749bc77f20ae58b14a279e873b798dc09177.jpg The Seasons of the Stonebeards: A Cyclical Dance of Rock & Snow Unlike their northern cousins, who dwell deep within the mountains, Stonebeard Dwarves live both above and beneath the earth. This unique lifestyle necessitates a keen understanding of the seasons, which significantly impact their farming and famed brewing industry. Garsòrandìr (Late Winter or 'Spring'): Begins with the ceremonial Day of Stone. Ebboria slowly emerges from its icy slumber, and the snow recedes to reveal the stone beneath. An ideal time for sowing and preparing the fields. Hilgùrson (High Sun or Summer): As the sun casts its golden embrace upon Ebboria, the dwarves reap the rewards of their hard work. This season is characterized by jubilation, dancing, and many a toast raised with freshly brewed ale. Frimsòrandìr (Early Winter): Marked by the Day of Snow, the first snowfall ushers in a sense of urgency among the dwarves. The hillside farmers, in particular, scurry to harvest the last of their crops. Sòrandìr (Deep Winter): A true test of resilience. The winds are merciless, the cold unforgiving. Yet, in this harsh climate, the brewing masters work their magic, preparing for the next cycle of growth. Ahatòr Stòrdargan (Time of Mud): Experienced both during spring and autumn, this transitional season represents renewal, growth, and change. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/34704322/702c099ca4169b6f2c34fdfd2b6902b73c35d5e2.jpg Navigating the Dwarven Calendar: Month by Month The northern dwarves segment their years into twelve moon periods.
