About this game

Touhou Gyakumyouran ~ Ephemeral Unnatural Balance (東方逆妙乱 ~ Ephemeral Unnatural Balance) is a Touhou Project fan game.

♎ STORY ♎

A peaceful spring in the land of Gensokyo descends into chaos. The balance of power has been suddenly reversed! The strong are now weak, and the weak are now strong. It's another incident, and incidents like this are usually resolved in a snap. This time, Gensokyo's usual heroines find themselves weaker than a common fairy. Since the likes of Reimu and Marisa are in no condition to solve an incident, three atypical protagonists step in to save Gensokyo.

♎ GAMEPLAY ♎

Each character has their own unique firing pattern. Pick the one you enjoy the most and dodge your way through the six-stage main game. After you've successfully cleared the main scenario, use your honed skills to challenge the unlockable Extra stage. The main game has four difficulties to choose from, and the Extra stage has two, so you can tip Gensokyo's scales back into balance regardless of your skill level.

♎ DISCORD MODE ♎

Sometimes the best way to fix something is to shatter it completely. That's why you can harness the power of the incident (and the Balance Gauge) to activate Discord Mode. Using this new mode will temporarily increase both risk and reward. Patterns will become more intense, but if you manage to survive the barrage you will be rewarded with additional lives (and a much higher score).

Players who want a higher challenge can enjoy Dissonant Mode, where Discord is permanently enabled. While playing in Dissonant Mode, the Balance gauge is used to power Flash Bombs instead. A Flash Bomb will clear bullets in a radius around you. If a regular enemy is caught in the radius of one, that enemy will be marked. Marked enemies will drop additional items, including extra life and bomb pieces if the enemy is sufficiently powerful.

    Patch Notes: Version 1.09

Happy summer! Here's a patch with more quality of life changes, such as nonspell/boss practice and various bug fixes. We're still hard at work on new content - don't be spooked by it coming in the future. NEW THINGS We've added a new "Practice" menu. This lets you practice nonspells or entire bosses in addition to the usual stage practice and spell practice. Added a display of how many times you've died/bombed/used Discord. This can be turned off in the options. Clearing the game will earn you a badge in character select. This is per-difficulty and per-character, so if you 1cc Normal Mode with Rin, you'll only see the badge if you pick Normal Mode and Rin again. Master an entire difficulty and you'll get a badge on it for your trouble! BALANCE CHANGES Generally reduced the difficulty of Shizuha's second nonspell. Tokiko does more damage to the fairies in Daiyousei's third nonspell. Patterns that spawn bullets outside of the screen should spawn them in less "cheap" ways. Examples are some fairies in stage 4 and Shizuha's first spellcard. MISC IMPROVEMENTS You now have unlimited continues. The title for stage 5 now renders under the bullets. Miscellaneous updates to the Japanese translation. Jellybean bullets should cause less lag. BUG FIXES Bosses now have their magic circles around them again. They lost them in the last update. Spellcard cutins no longer have a graphic appear at the top left for 1 frame. Daiyousei can no longer become invisible if killed while teleporting in her first spellcard. Shizuha's lifebar is now transparent during her Encore Spell. KNOWN ISSUES Replays may desync. We've added a warning for this in-game whenever you save a replay, just to be sure people know. Patch Notes: Version 1.08

This patch has changes aimed at making the game more convenient to play. There's also some under-the-hood preparations for some spooky future content. We've also updated the demo to match the current version and add support for Simplified Chinese. Give it a try before you buy! CHANGES Spellcard Practice is now available all the time. Only Rin and Kasen can be used initially. To use the third player in spell practice, you need to start the game with them once. Spellcard Practice now shows you how many different spellcards you've captured. Can you capture all of them? Dialogue no longer progresses automatically! Take as long as you'd like to read the story. Several improvements were made to the Japanese translation. Extra Stage spellcard bonuses are no longer capped at 99 million points. Minor balance changes. Added a "Special" menu. This menu will be used in a future update and is currently inaccessible. We held a poll on Twitter where you got to vote for the Stage 4 Midboss Fairy's name. The poll was very close so we decided to just use all four options. The stage 4 midboss fairy now has a name! Her name is different on each difficulty. Say hello to Harumi, or Fleya, or Iyubi, or Rosetta. BUG FIXES Fixed a few bugs related to the Options menu. It should now allow you to select every option and save your settings properly. Fixed some issues with bullets spawning at the top-left corner of the screen. Addressed a rare bug where save data could become corrupted. If corrupted data is detected, the game will avoid crashing and regenerate the corrupted file. KNOWN ISSUES Replays may desync. Record your gameplay live if you want to be perfectly sure it's saved. Patch Notes: Version 1.07

This patch has bugfixes and balance changes aimed at the Lunatic difficulty. We also attempted to make Discord versions of Lunatic attacks more possible. BALANCE CHANGES Tokiko will have an easier time killing summoned enemies during some boss patterns. Some later-game boss patterns have been made easier on Lunatic, both in and outside of Discord. Most of the changes were focused on Lily White, but Momiji, Daiyousei, and Kisume were changed too. BUG FIXES Fixed a bug where Continues behaved inconsistently. Fixed a bug where timing out the Prismriver midboss pattern would result in lingering graphical effects for the rest of the stage. Fixed a bug where Shizuha's final spellcard would break if you had the Bullet Delete Effect off. Fixed spacing issues during Tokiko's Good Ending. The clear symbols during player selection now work properly for the Extra stage. KNOWN ISSUES Replays may desync. Record your gameplay live if you want to be perfectly sure it's saved. 1ccing Standard Mode will also give you the clear symbol for Dissonant and vice-versa. Patch Notes: Version 1.06

We're hard at work on some new content, but until that's ready we've made yet another patch. This patch has some minor changes to the main game along with some more changes to improve qualify of life. BALANCE CHANGES The fairies in Spell 129-132 now change the direction they orbit the boss in every other wave. Boss attack timers have been generally reduced (especially later on in the game). Boss bomb resistance has been generally reduced (especially later on in the game). BUG FIXES Daiyousei no longer teleports off-screen in some attacks. Thank you to the player that reported this bug! A bug when you restart a run after a Game Over that causes an immediate Game Over afterwards has been fixed. Thanks to Luminous for reporting this! ENGINE CHANGES Load times should be decreased for most players. Less time loading means more time dodging! F12 no longer closes the game when pressed. Take Steam screenshots with confidence! OTHER CHANGES If you've cleared the game without using a continue, a "cleared" badge will appear during player selection indicating this. This badge appears per-character and per-difficulty. It doesn't work for Extra; we will add this next patch. When playing the main game or stage practice, the game will ask for additional confirmation if you choose any option that would end your current run of the game. Gone are the days of accidentally quitting during Lily White! Miscellaneous other performance optimizations Title screen fun increased by 50%. KNOWN ISSUES Replays may occasionally desync. Record your gameplay live if you want to be 100% sure it's saved. Feel free to come chat with us on Discord! We mostly speak English. https://discord.gg/25V97TU
