Game Mechanics And Faster Than Light Travel Nailed Down
So I've been finishing design documentation of how the universe will work, getting into the details including the math I will use. I've been studying theoretical physics and what our scientists in the real world think might be possible with our current understanding of physics.Faster than light travel will be done in the game using a Soliton Ripple Generator. It propagates a wave, like a ripple in water. However, this would be like a wave moving through a narrow canal that doesn't dissipate until it reaches the planned destination. The ship would be in a bubble in the center where no G forces are felt, even when the velocity of the bubble on the ripple/wave in space is faster than the speed of light. However there is a catch. Because of the speeds involved maneuvering is not possible after travel is initiated. The direction of the ripple in space can not be changed. This means the destination must be set before travel is initiated and it must be in a straight line. There will be two types of Soliton Ripple Generators in game. One will be the size of a space station and its only function is to generate the Soliton Ripple and send ships out. There is no need for another one on the receiving end. This will have the farthest range. There will also be ship mounted Soliton Ripple Generators but they will have limited range and not be as fast. Also high energy particles collect on the front edge of the ripple, there's a lot of dust in space. When the Soliton ripple stops and the bubble dissipates they can pose a serious risk to the ship. Therefore some technologies will be available to deal with that threat. The low tech option is a ship's shields will be depleted upon exiting the Soliton ripple as the shields were used to deflect the high energy particles which have accumulated during faster than light travel. It will take time to recharge the shields in this case. The charging time depends on components on your ship, or ships you own that are using this option when exiti...Read full article on Community Announcements (darthhawk)AnnouncementsOfficial
Early Access Release 1
I'm uploading today because I said I would. I scrapped everything and started over April 2025. This release is around 4-5 months of work. The Cartographer is now a 2D app. Very limited space sim game play. All you can do right now is fly through star systems you create. I wanted to have a functioning galaxy up and running with enemies to engage with and space stations to dock at with today's upload. Unfortunately I've had things in my personal life I needed to deal with. The plan was to have another update next month, end of September 2025, but now I'm gong to have to release several updates throughout September to get to where I wanted to be now. I understand people are going to be disappointed. There were several days I had scheduled to work on this but wasn't able to due to things beyond my control. That's why I'm behind. The hull designer has been removed from this build because creating 3D models and then importing them into the game increases RAM the game uses more than I'm comfortable with. So I'm going to rework it and the Hull Designer will be back in a future update. The default launch option opens the Cartographer. Pressing the "Play" button from Steam library will bring up launch options. Choose the second one to fly around in star systems you create. Right now it's simply a flying camera. The Space Sim part of the game currently is hard coded to only load a star system named "Rigel". Star systems you create with the Cartographer will be saved in "Documents/My Games/SpaceTimeShipyard/StarSystems/Pressing the ESC key in the space sim will freeze the game and bring up the menu. Currently the options are to adjust the LOD system for asteroid fields and change keyboard controls. Obviously there is so much more to be added. The default controls are W - Forward, S- Stop, A - turn left, D - turn rightI apologize I really wanted to have so much more for this update. I'm going to try to release a minor update on September 4th, next week and more throughout the mont...Read full article on Community Announcements (darthhawk)AnnouncementsOfficial
Add Star Systems You Want To The Game's Galaxy & Nebulas
Nebula have been added. A nebula cloud's color determine its properties and what effect if has on ships flying through them. Will this nebula cause havoc with your sensors, weaken your shields, or something else? The video in this post shows changes made to the Cartographer. It's now a 2D app that ships with the game. Players will be able to set the altitude axis of stellar objects in the star systems they create using a slider in the Cartographer. In the video I create a simple star system and fly through it. The music in the video will be in the game.Read full article on Community Announcements (darthhawk)Patch NotesOfficial
Getting Closer To A Major Update!
My goal is to have the major update out before September 2025. It will still be in early access after the update. I redid the Cartographer, (the level editor), for designing star systems. The star systems are going to be humongous! Traveling the impulse speed of the USS Enterprise in this game will take the player more than 10 hours (in real life sitting in front of the computer) to travel from one side of any star system to another! Don't worry there will be faster than light travel options even in star systems ;) Well... if you have the fuel.Lately I've been working on the asteroid fields.Read full article on Community Announcements (darthhawk)AnnouncementsOfficial
