Experience the thrill of driving vintage diesel trains by shifting gears yourself in Diesel Railcar Simulator. Create unique routes, customize your trains, and compete for a perfect score while enjoying the relaxed atmosphere of an indie simulation game.
About this game
Driving
- Customise your driving experience to suit your needs: either drive the train fully manually with optional helpful HUD guides, or activate the 'simple controls' mode for easy six-key driving.
- Drive using a keyboard, a gamepad, or use your mouse to control the interactive in-cab controls.
- Alternatively, hand the controls over to the AI, relax and watch the computer drive the train from any viewpoint, or change trains to view any currently active service.
Realism
- Physics are simulated in detail: individual components of the transmission are replicated to ensure realistic behaviour. The suspension of each vehicle is also modelled to make it bounce and sway over uneven trackwork.
- Sounds are mostly authentic: many of the most prominent sounds used in game are recordings of the real trains.
- Computer-driven AI trains occasionally make human-like mistakes like running late or misjudging braking at stations.
Gameplay
- Each route features a full daytime timetable with every service being drivable. Choose from hundreds of Inter-City, semifast, stopping, freight, rescue and empty coaching stock train services.
- Upon completing a service, your driving style and timekeeping are evaluated. Try the same run again to reach a higher score by braking more accurately or driving more economically, but stay alert: the signal that was green on the previous run might be red this time, due to a late-running AI train.
- The career mode ties individual runs together into a coherent experience with a good balance of randomisation and player choice.
- Unlock a variety of achievements to discover all the different styles of playing the simulator.
Trains
- Four British Railways diesel railcar classes with manual gearboxes: 112, 117, 122 and 126
- Class 127 railcar with torque converters (no need to change gears)
- Locomotives: Classes 03, 37 and 40
- A variety of passenger coaches and goods wagons
- More trains available on the Steam Workshop
Routes
- Choose from three routes totalling over 150 miles of track, each with their own unique feel:
- North Landen: a 4-track main line with express and stopping trains racing each other during the busiest hours of the day
- Westfords: a warm valley route with city centres connected by two alternative main lines and suburban branches at each end
- Mountain Pass: a double track through line with a single line section meandering over hilly, rugged landscape with challenging gradients
- More routes available on the Steam Workshop
Modding
- With the game's built-in train, route and timetable editors and Steam Workshop support, Diesel Railcar Simulator is the perfect game for modding:
- Train editor: create new liveries and trains using your own custom 3D-models and the built-in library of assets. Also includes an integrated vehicle body modelling tool which can be used without prior modelling experience
- Route Editor: create brand new routes using built-in assets, custom imported ones or create your own inside the editor
- Timetable editor: bring your route to life with busy traffic around the clock

Gameplay patch 9
Gameplay patch 9 is now live with the following changes: Achievements Halved Flying Shoebox achievement minimum time to five minutes in order to make it easier to unlock Fixed missed stop penalty and unlocking of the Amnesia achievement Made it possible to unlock other achievements at the same time with the perfection achievement Physics Fixed possible incorrect buffer position when two trains are coupled together Improved accuracy of physics calculations Optimised CPU and memory usage of physics simulation Miscellanous Fixed a crash when restarting a rescue scenario Fixed signaller to not turn points underneath a train in some cases Adjusted cloud sizes and colours Clarified train length tooltips in the timetable editor Optimised some geometry related calculations Added sound preloading: sounds should be audible at start if you let trains load at least partially on the loading screen before starting the run What's next? Another patch coming soonRead full article on Community Announcements (Lapioware)Patch NotesOfficial
Gameplay patch 8
Gameplay patch 8 is now live with the following changes: Timetable editor Fixed timetable editor to always write decimal values using dot instead of the current culture setting of the operating system. If loading a timetable crashes the game, it may be because the timetable data was previously saved using decimal comma (and can be fixed manually using a text editor). Train editor Changed train editor to save vehicle data in text instead of binary format Audio Fixed packed .wav files possibly becoming corrupted when loaded Optimised loading of custom .wav files to reduce freezing Optimised CPU and memory usage of the sound system. When loading a run saved with the previous version, some of the sounds for existing trains may be missing but should work for newly spawned trains and new runs. What's next? Gameplay patch 7
Gameplay patch 7 is now live with the following changes: Graphics Adjusted sky colour, tint, depth-of-field and grain Fixed some scenery objects appearing in the wrong place for one frame when they're loaded for the first time Physics Fixed a bug causing unbraked wagons to push brake vans and locomotives downhill even with the brake fully applied Fixed a bug causing Class 03 brakes to be stuck even when they're shown as fully released Traffic Fixed six pathfinding bugs Fixed some stations in rescue scenarios having passing times greater than the arrival to the next stop Added missing Class 126 Inter-City depot movements to the North Landen default timetable User interface Simplified key prompt and penalty animations on the HUD to be less distracting Increased simple notches from three to four in order to match the number of throttle notches on the railcars Fixed restarting a run to not reset edits made to the formation Fixed cancelling the starting of a run to not reset edits made to the formation Timetable editor Added service ending time to service heading in the side panel Changed timetable editor to save data in text rather than binary format. Editing some things in bulk (using search&replace for instance) is easier in a text editor than in the timetable editor What's next? Gameplay patch 6 (Diesel brake tender)
Gameplay patch 6 adds diesel brake tenders to the Mountain Pass freight runs in the Shift Experiment timetable, modelled by Radical Mesh. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/32116909/85a8f7dd520205f5ee0522443bb43982bfe5e042.jpg British Railways used diesel brake tenders to improve the braking capabilities of goods trains with unbraked wagons. They are essentially unmanned brake vans controlled from the locomotive. The low profile allows them to be coupled on either side of the locomotive without obstructing view. The darker shade of green is more accurate than the lighter one currently used on the Class 37 model. The 37 will be repainted with a matching colour eventually. This patch also has a number of other changes: All editors Fixed progress reporting to show all phases when updating asset packs Changed asset packing to produce slightly better looking textures in some cases Improved material properties view in the side panel: Restored default normal scale to 1 since normals should now work properly. Made other properties read-only when a builtin material name is selected since they won't have any effect Train editor Removed "Models" tab from the side panel and added "Open integrated modelling tool" under the button instead Replaced highlighting with outlining when hovering with mouse over objects Route editor Fixed 3D-terrain sync delay after converting a grid to terrain nodes Fixed two possible crashes when doing DEM and node removal operations Changed non-contributing terrain node removal to not touch nodes connected to pinned edges Added progress reporting to non-contributing terrain node removal, DEM importing and grid-to-terrain conversion Optimised grid-to-terrain conversion Optimised terrain node removal Made it possible to select multiple terrain nodes by holding down the option key (left shift by default) and editing their properties from the side panel at the same time Added a mode for selecting multiple terrain nodes by painting with a circular brush. Gameplay patch 5 (DEM import)
The fifth gameplay patch is now live with the following changes: Visuals Fixed a problem with train cars sometimes briefly appearing in the wrong position Fixed LOD building for train cars to happen behind the scenes instead of overlapping the base model Fixed discontinuities in normals and texture coordinates for some models generated from cross sections like road surfaces Fixed material colour loading from .mtl files (fixes Class 205 cable colours) Fixed custom materials to use smoothness slider value when also using a metallic/smoothness map (was previously always 100% causing a shiny surface) Fixed possibly missing custom models on the Laguna Paiva workshop route Possibly fixed grass sometimes being loaded only partially Restored some brown vegetation near the North Landen portal All editors Fixed editor side panel bug where a wrong item would be shown after selecting an option from a list Fixed parsing of certain length and position values to only accept decimal period (instead of comma) in some editor fields, regardless of the operating system setting Train editor Fixed train editor to highlight some parts of the models correctly when hovering over with the mouse pointer Added 3D-gizmo Route editor Fixed grids to remain intact when increasing divisions by more than one at a time Fixed adding a new grid to also open the model node parts of the properties on the side panel Fixed terrain triangulation not being triggered when adding a new terrain node on top of an existing edge Fixed a possible crash when adding or removing terrain nodes Attempted to fix a possible crash when quickly updating terrain presets or other types DEM importing The route editor now supports two methods of importing digital elevation maps (DEM): Adding a grid, loading the height of its nodes from a greyscale image file and converting them into terrain nodes Loading terrain nodes directly from a text file (through the route properties side panel option) See the route editor guide DEM chapt...Read full article on Community Announcements (Lapioware)
