About this game

Growing up, I spent most of my summers indoors playing video games, trying to beat that one final level, trying to get just a bit better and beat my own high score. Roguebreaker is my love letter to that time of my life, when you could just lose yourself in a colorful world for a little bit. Beat a level, unlock a new upgrade, and repeat. It's a small, simple game designed to be played in a short sitting, just long enough to zone out and have a good time for a few minutes and relax. I hope you're able to feel a little bit of that as you play. If not, I'd be happy to hear why and what I could do to make it that much better for you.

Thanks so much for giving it a shot!

  • Break enough bricks and you make a choice between two upgrades. Beat 10 levels and you've got a totally different set of upgrades compared than the last run.

  • Each level is randomly chosen from a preset pool, so you have a general understanding of what's next, but you can't be sure.

  • The higher your score, the faster the ball. The more balls you get the more fun you have. It's simple.

  • Restarting a run means totally different handcrafted levels and a unique set of choices to make.

  • Break bricks like nobody's business. Hearty bricks, moving bricks, pickup bricks, innocent bricks, it's got bricks for days.

  • It's got all the pickups you can imagine. Multiballs, extra speed, extra score, extra style, extra fun. Too much fun though and things get hard, be careful.

  • After you beat a level, you choose an upgrade, go slowmo, suck the ball back to the paddle, fire missiles, tilt the board and bounce the ball, it's great. If you game over though, you start from scratch.

  • The more you play, the more you unlock, the more you understand, the better you play.

  • After mastering all 20+ of my handcrafted levels you can start adding your own. Just create a map and drag it into the custom maps folder and you're good to go.

  • Trailer music was generously provided by Dance With The Dead

  • Official workshop support is in progress, but can create and share levels without it!

  • Please don't hesitate to contact me if you're unhappy, I want to make sure you enjoy the game as much as I did making it!

I've started working on Magnolia, a strategy/tactics game, where you are in control of everything!

https://steamcdn-a.akamaihd.net/steamcommunity/public/images/clans/32987154/39b118616020d19b5d8dfe7eb41a21d2effb4b94.png You can wishlist it here, and check out more screenshots! https://store.steampowered.com/app/977780/Magnolia/ The game is dealing with the consequences of your decisions, with a very detailed combat system. You'll be choosing between killing a unit or having everyone starve, saving a civilian or looting their lifeless body. I'm really excited because the project is so much bigger than anything I've done, and I hope you'll all come by and check it out! It's very early so the game's quickly evolving, so any feedback you'd like to give is amazing! I know it's a huge departure from the brickbreaker genre, but given how my games before Roguebreaker have gone, I think I'm in a great position to execute on this one properly too! So in short, I'm working on an ambitious new game, and I look forward to sharing more about it!

New Update! Bumper/ball hitstun is now an option!

Hey! I've made a fairly important change to Roguebreaker's gameplay. It used to be that when you quickly moved the bumper and collided with the ball, I had the game briefly slowdown so as to highlight the impact, along with scaling up the ball-speed growth with it. The idea was that on those high intensity moments as you reach for the ball at the last second you'd really feel the tension. It turns out that it ended up adding more unpredictability than intended, so now it's been made a disabled-by-default option. While I still feel like it's the way to play Roguebreaker, I'm happy to provide a more standard experience! Looking forward to reading your reviews, thanks so much! Enjoy the holidays! :dwayneelf: Added the option to enable bumper/ball hitstun into the Options screen Tweaked hitstun, it is now disabled by default, instead of always-on. Tweaked colors on the leaderboard, so that when you hover over a name, their selected loadout is distinctly colored from their username.

New Update! Level editor and music

Hey, happy holidays! This update should resolve the music looping over itself after you die a few times in a row, and adds a Create Level button to the main menu, so that you can more easily create levels to be shared with your friends. Remember that in order to upload the Custom Levels to the Steam Workshop, you must first save the Custom Level, then from Level Select > Custom, you choose your created map, then select Upload to begin silently uploading it to the Steam Workshop, where it will be made public shortly thereafter. If you don't see it show up on the Steam Workshop immediately, make sure you're filtering by your own levels, because sometimes it takes a minute for the Steam Workshop to catch up. If you want to try someone else's levels, it's as easy as subscribing to their Workshop Level through Steam, and then the next time you boot up Roguebreaker, you'll see it in your list of Workshop levels. I also removed some non-beta branches that were no longer useful. If you were still on them, you should be transitioned over to the main public branch automatically. Thank you for all the generous reviews, each one makes my day! Enjoy the holidays! Added Create Level button to the main menu Fixed background music sometimes looping for certain people after they die several times on a single level Tweaked panels in the Level Editor screen, and removed some gray corners. Tweaked Main Menu buttons so that they're not offset by a single pixel depending on how far down they are in the list

New update: New bricks and music!

This update adds moving bricks, a new music track to jam to, fixes the unresponsive bumper and a few smaller changes. The way the new bricks work is that draw a set of adjacent Rail bricks, and you set a Cart brick along the path, and any number of Cart bricks will randomly select a nearby Rail brick to move to, so long as it's touching. Note that you can get pretty tricky with it, since you can end up with stacked Cart bricks if they move around close enough! I’m happy that I was finally able to resolve the mouse issue, I got lucky and found a laptop that could reproduce the issue. Added ‘cart’ and ‘rails’ bricks to 12 existing maps Added ‘cart’ and ‘rails’ bricks to the level editor (accessible via Custom Levels) Added a new music track by PunchDeck Fixed mouse and bumper being unresponsive for certain people (no longer have to hit M to play the game) Fixed Wide Shoulders and You’ve Got Friends interacting in such a way that you could no longer move your bumpers Fixed an issue with the level editor leaving extra bricks when clicking ‘Save’ Fix needing to restart Roguebreaker if you wanted to upload two changes to a workshop map Tweaked ball trail to be more transparent Thanks again to everyone who’s been emailing me, DMing me and giving me feedback. If you’ve got an idea for a future update, please let me know!

New update: Unbreakable bricks tweaked and crash fixes

A small update to fix some issues with the new maps introduced in the latest of content updates I've been making to Roguebreaker free since release. Added: Five variations of the white-bordered unbreakable bricks. The more you hit them with balls, the more they visually degrade, letting you know it's doing something. Fixed: No longer crash on trying to load Flood map Fixed: "Invader" map no longer has breakable bricks surrounded by breakable bricks Thanks again for trying my game, it would be possible without people (like pasechnikk) giving me feedback in the discussion board here!
