In After the Collapse, strategize and survive by building bases across layers and battling factions for control. With dozens of survivors to manage and forgotten technologies to uncover, every decision counts in this intense indie simulation game released in 2022.

About this game

After The Collapse is a base-building game set in a post-apocalyptic world featuring both urban and country-side environments. It features Z levels (ability to dig down to explore caverns and sewers) and the ability to manage multiple dozens of survivors in real-time. It also gives you the choice between playing as technology-minded humans, combat-focused mutants, or even a tribe of cannibals.

Your task is to manage a band of survivors and protect them against raiders, mutants, monsters, and other environmental threats. To do so, you'll have to build a base, discover new technologies, and scavenge for resources. As the game progresses, you'll send expeditions to explore a dynamic world map to find other survivors, repair resource production centers, deal with other factions, uncover hidden secrets, and retrieve lost technologies.

After The Collapse, on top of being a free-form base-building game with light 4X elements, also includes multiple scenarios and a very expansive Story Mode with an optional tutorial for newcomers.

  • Build a colony in procedurally generated environments featuring many biomes, weather patterns, multiple underground layers with resources, and dangerous foes.
  • Manage a population ranging from a few survivors to hundreds of them and defend them against bandits and other creatures with automated turrets, traps, and other defensive structures.
  • Multiple game modes, a full story mode, and several scenarios with specific challenges, goals, and quests.
  • Launch expeditions to find more survivors, loot, and technologies in a dynamic world map where other factions are competing for control of the various resource production centers. Deal with them as you see fit.
  • Explore forgotten bunkers through an interactive story system to uncover lost technologies, like the ability to build your own customizable robotic army.
  • Use captured enemies as a workforce or as commodities and tame giant creatures to use them as pets, cattle, or even a way to defend yourself.
  • Deal with dozens of special events: sicknesses, fires during heat waves, mental breakdown, enemy raiders, requests for help from civilians, and many more.
  • Full modding and Steam Workshop support.

After The Collapse features a long campaign that also serves as a tutorial in its early stages. It follows the adventures of a group of survivors since their arrival in the bunker which kept them alive during the Collapse. It also sets the game's official lore through cutscenes and interactive quests.

While Story Mode is played as a group of standard humans, in all other game modes and most scenarios, you can play as one of three archetypes:

  • The weak but technologically-minded humans who sure die easily in a fight, but they can unlock the ability to build modern gear, weapons, and automated turrets to defend themselves.
  • The strong mutants, immune to most sicknesses and weather effects, but have a tendency to fight amongst themselves and are very technology limited. They rely on map exploration and scavenging to find and use the more powerful weapons.
  • The nasty cannibals who have no issue converting bandits and other hostiles into food, but who have forgotten their pre-war skills.

As the game progresses, the world around you will change. Plants will grow, wither and die. Weather will change, impacting your crops. Creatures will start roaming the countryside and may enter your base when you don't expect it. Other factions will compete for the control of the critical resource production centers.

After the Collapse is under active development and will continue to receive free content updates regularly.

We respond to feedback and bug reports quickly.

After The Collapse is a very easy game to mod. Mod creators will enjoy its very robust engine and that all the game's data (from items to mobs or game events) is written in a simple, text-driven, format. More advanced modders will appreciate the ability to use LUA.

Of course, the Steam Workshop is fully supported.

After The Collapse – v2.0.0 is out!

Hi there! So, after a longer hiatus than I'd have liked, v2.0.0 is finally out, and it's a big one. This update has two sides to it: a major engine overhaul under the hood, and a solid chunk of new content on top. As usual, I'll go over the main changes in the article proper, while the rest is in the changelog at the end.Enjoy!Under the hood firstThis took quite a while to write, but I ported the game from .NET Framework 4.7 to .NET 10, which is essentially a complete engine migration. MonoGame, Penumbra lighting, OpenAL, everything got updated to current modern versions. The result is noticeably better rendering performance, especially on large maps and underground layers. It also fixes many minor technical issues. The downside being that Windows 10 is now the minimum requirement for 2.0. Version 1.5.1 will stay available in the Game Version/Beta tab in the game's properties on Steam. Some game mods may demand you to install the Windows .NET 10.0 Runtime. This is an unavoidable side effect. You'll be prompted by a popup if that's the case. The game should also now be easier to run under Proton/Wine on Linux, untested for now, but the foundations are there. Under Proton, it might need the "Windows Desktop runtime" to be installed in the Proton prefix for things to work.New contentOn the content side, the main additions are drones and the ability for Arakans to unlock the full tech tree at the Sacrificial Pit.There are two new technologies in the tech tree ("Drones" and "Advanced Drones"), unlocking several new buildable units covering combat, maintenance, and support roles. Additionally, a new Pet Carrier item lets you bring pets and drones along on expeditions where they'll participate in combat. Right now, they'll only help in active battles, they do no count toward automated fights.I also reworked the hostile raid system a bit with a new generation method and a new raid types to increase variety in the mid and late game. I added a cap to zombie-spawning POIs too (c...

    Maintenance Patch 1.5.1.1

This is a small maintenance patch fixing the non functioning recycling bench in 1.5.1. When updating the UI, the "queue recipe" button for this bench got accidentally removed. This is now fixed. My bad it took so long, it sorta coincided with me going to vacations in July. Have a nice day!

    Update 1.5.1: New Sound Library

Hello, ATC gets a new sound library! So I am aware that some of you (especially those using Windows Home edition in parts of Europe and Asia) are experiencing audio-related issues, crashes, and bugs since v0.8, with some versions of the game behaving better than others. Sometimes downloading a Windows package helps, but other times, nothing seems to work. Because it seems to be a more common issue than I initially thought, I ported the game to a third and final sound library that doesn't suffer from the same problem (this time, it's OpenAL). As far as I can tell, this should fix any remaining audio-related problem. Of course, this is not exactly a trivial change. Audio files had to be reprocessed. The new library had to be adapted to run in place of what I was using before. Initial game loading time might be a bit longer than it used to be, at least if you're running on old hardware. There's not much I can do about that. Please, if after this update, you're still experiencing any issue, make sure to contact me on Discord or in this very thread. Normally, Steam will install OpenAL for you (if not already installed), but just in case, the game will also attempt to automatically install it if it's missing. If you're experiencing (audio) issues that you weren't before, you can rollback to 1.5.0 standard in the Beta tab. I hope this will help those who wanted to enjoy the full experience but couldn't until now. Cheers! Full Changelog Engine: Switched from NAudio to OpenAL Engine: Fire sound effects are now handled by the correct sound library Engine: All audio files had to be reprocessed, hence the update's size Fixed: Sound library not loading properly on some systems, causing the game to crash or be silent on startup

    Spiderling Content Update 1.5.0

I'm happy to announce the release of After The Collapse 1.5.0, one of the biggest content updates to date. This Spiderling Content Update brings many new features, significant UI improvements, and expanded faction content. This article only covers the main changes. As usual, check the change-log at the end for a complete list. Arakan Faction Expanded The playable Arakan faction archetype has received substantial improvements in this update. I've expanded their technology tree with themed buildings and unique game-play mechanics that truly set them apart from other factions. Arakans can now brew specialized potions, including one for cooling (providing stress reduction and happiness) and another to boost prisoner compliance, making it a lot easier to convert them to your cause. They've also gained access to the Sacrificial Pit, a powerful new building that allows trading human lives for various boons. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/33563935/4807a7e33453d2a89d0b0b53309cb2d8e8c5bf54.png For those eager to try this faction, I've included a dedicated Arakan-centric scenario with suitable starting gear, an interesting map, and a larger population to properly experience their unique playstyle. Arakans now have their own starter expedition "vehicle" (yes, it's a giant spider!) and can unlock an even better transport option through the Sacrificial Pit. Spiderling Content True to the update's name, I've added extensive spider-related content. Spiderling seeds are now available, serving different purposes depending on your faction: fodder for everyone, booze ingredients for mutants, and potion components for Arakans. I've completely redesigned the Ice Spiders, replacing their shotgun attack with slow explosive ice balls that make combat spacing more strategic. They also now have standard melee capabilities. Rock spiders found in caves are tankier with full chitin carapaces, and butchering them yields stones as a bonus resource. Arakans can now build both rock and ice spider nests, and I'v...
