About this game

Dig in. Build up. Reach for the stars.

Sunward is a deep, cozy space-industry sim. Mine asteroids, refine raw ore into valuable goods, trade on a living market, and grow a single station core into a sprawling, freighter-linked empire that spans the solar system and beyond! Build at your own pace and reach for the stars.

Mine, refine, and trade

Extractor drills bite into asteroids and cargo shuttles haul the ore home. Smelt metal plate, blow glass, draw wire, then climb the production tree to alloys, circuits, and high value Components in a flexible Fabricator. Sell to Earth on a dynamic market where every sale nudges the price down and scarcity drives it back up.

Build a modular station

Snap buildings together to build efficient networks. Every module needs air, workers and power. Reactors burn fuel, life support pressurizes habitats, and survey scanners chart the space around you. Zoom in close and watch your colonists work inside.

Grow a colony

Workers are your population. Colonists ride in from colonized worlds, fill habitats, and draw wages and consumer goods. Keep them paid and supplied and morale stays high, lifting both colony growth and factory output. Neglect them and you face a recoverable slump, never a sudden loss.

Expand across the solar system

Zoom all the way out to the system map: the planets ringing the Sun, each its own buildable world with its own asteroid field. Colonize, settle, and trade between regions and systems, with empire freighters running goods, and colonists along the orbits. Colonies you have left keep producing while you are away.

Research and megastructures

Spend research points on a tech tree that unlocks new drills, resources, and buildings. Recover artifacts to reveal hidden technologies, then raise the great works: a planet anchored Space Elevator, a Warp Gate that opens new star systems on a galaxy map, and finally the Ascension Spire, your victory, with free play continuing after.

Survive the void

Solar flares and micro-asteroid showers can strike, and your risk depends on where you settle. Inner orbits bake, outer orbits get pelted. Build detectors, ride out the storm, and follow the always on Solar System News Network as telegraphed scenarios swing the markets and give you time to plan.

Key features

  • A satisfying production loop: mine, refine, manufacture, and sell up a multi tier economy.

  • Modular base building with airlock networks, power, oxygen, and see-inside interiors.

  • A living colony: workforce, morale, wages, and immigration policy.

  • A whole solar system of colonizable worlds linked by freighters and contracts.

  • A tech tree and alien Xeno research gating buildings, recipes, and megastructures.

  • An endgame goal ladder: Space Elevator, Warp Gate, galaxy expansion, Ascension Spire.

  • Dynamic markets and telegraphed news scenarios that reward planning.

  • No hard failure, only recoverable setbacks. Play relaxed or optimize hard.

  • A pixel-art look rendered with procedural shaders.

  • Windows, Mac and Linux, Steam Deck ready, with Steam Cloud and achievements.

Dig in. Build up. Reach for the stars.

Sunward 0.5.3 - Find Your Own Way

0.5.3 stops driving. The old opening tour locked the interface, walked you through 81 steps and then left you on a cliff. It taught, but it drove. In its place: an objective ladder that tells you what is worth doing next, and an Administrator who explains why, both of which then get out of your way. Existing saves pick up the new ladder on load, crediting everything you have already done. The objective ladderA new Objectives panel, on its own top-bar button. Chapters open one after another, each rung saying what it wants and paying out when you do it.Order inside a chapter is free. Do the rungs however you like, and anything you had already done ticks the moment the chapter opens.Locked rungs stay visible and name what they are waiting on, so you can always see where the ladder goes next. The chapters carry the opening much further than the tour did: ore and power, first trade, the lab, deep-space sensors and their long-range dish, a spaceyard and a real cargo fleet, your second world, then heavy industry. Your Administrator speaksThe leader you picked comments on what just happened and what is worth doing next, in a comms card that never pauses the game and never takes the mouse away from you.A "Show me" button sits on their cards and on objectives. Every lesson the old tutorial taught is still there, now on demand, and none of them seize the controls.Three separate toggles in Options: "Show me" hints, first-time guides, and Administrator commentary. The relic arc, all the way to the Warp GateOnce a deep scan picks something up, a second objective stack opens alongside the main one, so the mystery never blocks the economy. It runs the whole way: chart the relics, decode all five fragments, research Precursor Gate Physics, build the Gate, read the star address and warp out.The old relic quest panel is folded into the Objectives board, so the whole arc reads in one place. Sunward 0.5.2 - From Ice to the Table

0.5.2 puts life support on the factory floor. Food and water are no longer numbers that take care of themselves. They are supplies, produced by a chain you build and keep running: ice out of the belt, water out of the ice, food out of the water. Existing saves pick up the new chain on load. Nothing is lost. The ice to food chainIce is a new basic mineral, found in every belt. The new Ice Drill mines it.The new Water Refinery turns that ice into water, enough for a whole colony from a single building. The Hydroponics Farm is a real producer now: water goes in, food comes out, with a live craft animation like any other factory. Both new buildings come with their own construction stages, interiors and lighting. A colony that drinksWater is its own Comfort pillar, next to housing, food and wages. Run short and Comfort falls, production slows and your crew starts leaving.Food and water each raise their own shortage alerts, held back while you are still founding the colony. The population panel breaks both down per colonist type: what each tier wants, and what it actually gets. The tutorial walks you through the ice and water chain, and the New Game screen lists the food and water you start with. Around the baseSurveyed asteroids show what is left inside them right on the rock, counting down live as you mine.Cargo shuttles route smarter: after unloading, they favour a job that starts where they already are, so they fly far fewer empty legs.Cores need a small crew now, on the station, the mine and the spaceyard alike. They are staffed first, ahead of everything else. The asteroid belt sits further out, leaving more room to build around the planet, and your starting shuttles rest on a landing pad instead of the middle of the core. The play button pulses gently while the game is paused, asteroids have a cleaner silhouette, and buildings under construction no longer look stretched. FixesBuilding ambience kept humming while the game was paused.A batch of backlog bugs fixed. Feedback...

Sunward 0.5.1 - The Long Rebalance

The economy has been retuned from your first minutes in the tutorial all the way to the Space Elevator, and every world now sets its own prices, so where you sell finally matters as much as what you sell. Existing saves pick up the new balance on load. Nothing is lost.Local market pricesEach world keeps its own prices. Whatever is scarce on a planet sells for more there, so shipping the right cargo to the right market is worth the trip. The market table shows how much each world pays above or below the standard, so you can plan a route at a glance. One Comfort scoreCrew wellbeing used to be two overlapping stats. It is now a single number, fed by housing, food, wages and consumer goods.Comfort drives growth, immigration and how well your buildings run. Let housing or food slip and your production slows down with it. The economy, retunedThe debt you owe Earth now grows at a real yearly rate, but can never pass a hard ceiling. Falling behind hurts, it can no longer bury you.The tech tree is deeper and lasts the whole campaign instead of running dry in the first hour.Buildings cost more and more of them need materials to build, so what you build first matters. You start with more money to match.Charter Tribute deadlines are more forgiving, the later steps ask for less, and running late only stops you from selling. You can still buy, at a markup, so you can always trade your way back out.Futures contracts now ask for amounts you can actually deliver, and buying then reselling on the spot is no longer free money.Goal rewards are worth having again at the point you reach them.Shuttles burn far less fuel. One used to drink more than a whole refining chain could produce.Clinics and rec domes no longer eat through their own supplies, and buildings cost less to maintain. InterfaceThe New Game screen is now a full administrator dossier: pick a face on the left, read their file on the right, with their strengths and weaknesses as colored cards and everything they start with laid...
