About this game

Net Worthless is a turn-based game about running one ordinary life like a small business that never quite breaks even. One turn is one month. You don't walk your character around town. You sit where they sit: in front of the plan, the bank balance, and the consequences.

It starts with picking a character. Each one is a different life with its own starting point, goal, and deadline: a student with more ambition than furniture, a laid-off office worker with a severance check and a grudge, and other people you might recognize from the mirror. Different constraints, different endings. In practice, a different game each run.

Plan the next 30 days: hours of sleep, hours at the desk job, hours in the gym, hours learning to code, hours doomscrolling. Take the job offer or hold out for something better. Enroll in a course, invest, finally cancel the subscription you forgot you had. Then end planning and watch the month play out. Paydays drop in, bills drop out, and about once a quarter life interrupts with an event you didn't budget for.

Inflation compounds quietly while you sleep. Rent doesn't care how your month went, subscriptions keep charging until you notice them, and a balance below zero digs itself deeper on its own. When you feel lucky, there's a stock market full of parody companies like Snoogle, Charbucks and Nokla. It can beat your salary for a year, then take it all back in one red month. The numbers behave like the 2020s. Only the brands are made up.

The demo moves to version 1.0

Exactly two months to release! Build 1.0.1509. This is the final version of the demo: polished, updated on your feedback, and brought in line with everything that has happened to the rest of the game since the last build. The version number is the release one now, but the demo's scope is what it was: one run, as the Student. The rest is for the full game :) Here is what is new. "Choose Your Destiny". The Student's first event now asks what to study: "Architecture", "Law" or "Programming". The starting kit is the same either way; only the bachelor you are enrolled in differs. Until now the major was decided for you by a line in a file you never saw. Six new careers, each with its own five-course chain, employers and icons: architecture, police, law, construction, music, culinary. These are two-attribute careers: every rung asks for both and trains both. The "Construction Laborer" needs no diploma and no equipment. The "Dishwasher" takes you at sixteen with no requirement at all, but kitchens run longer weeks than other jobs of the same tier. Musicians audition: the two lowest rungs hire at 45 % and 50 % odds instead of the usual 70 % and 65 %. Habits. Two new timed debuffs and the events that hand them out: "On the Bottle" (happy hours, a nightcap, and the coworker who keeps asking you out for drinks) and "One More Spin" (free spins and a table in the back room). Each lasts eight months and wears off on its own. Statuses that cost you time. "Guild Raider": the "Raid Night Invitation" event pulls you into an online guild that reserves ten hours a week in "Time allocation" for ten months and pays a little happiness; a month without an equipped computer gets you kicked early. "Off the Grid": three months without an equipped phone cost ten hours a week and a little happiness until you equip any phone. Both show as a locked row in Time allocation, with the months left or the way out under the name. "Merry Christmas". A yearly December event. Its recap shows next year's in...

Goods wear out, birthdays, and long runs stop lagging

Build 0.5.0109. The biggest demo update so far, and most of it comes from watching people play the last one. One thing first. Someone reported that the game got slower and slower over a long run while memory stayed flat. That was real. Every store window you had ever opened was being rebuilt behind the scenes on every money change of the month tick, the journal re-sorted its whole list for each new entry, and saving and the event roll did work that grew with the length of the run. All of that is gone. A five-year run ends its month as fast as a five-month one. Now the new things. Goods wear out. A phone bought in month one used to behave exactly like one bought in month sixty. Now every equipped good ages. Nothing happens for the first two years, then the odds of a break climb month by month, and by four and a half years it is certain. A break arrives as an event: repair it for 70 % of what you paid and the clock resets, or let it go and take a happiness hit. Clothes and accessories can break now too, not only phones, computers and cars. In exchange, electronics no longer bill monthly upkeep. A phone charging you 300 a month never made sense. Only vehicles still cost money to keep. Birthdays. Your character has a real birth date now, shown under Age on the character sheet, and the yearly age tick lands in that month. Every round-number birthday is an event: a splurge whose price and joy grow with age, from 380 at 20 to 2 550 at 90, or a quiet evening for free. The commerce chain. Six 12-month courses on the additional education board that change how you scout the boards instead of what you pay. Bargain Hunting 101 and Market Watch each cut the research cooldown by two months, The Classifieds Grapevine and Showroom Scouting add two cards to every board roll, The Ten-Second Rule halves research hours, and The Insider Circle takes the cooldown to zero, so you research every month. Each rung drips Cunning. Education rungs tell you what they are for. Hover any rung on th...

Burnout you can actually catch, and the whole game on a keyboard

Build 0.5.2708. A smaller one than last time, but two of the items are things people asked for by name. Burnout has been in the game since the first build. Nobody ever saw it. The trigger counted hours you cannot actually schedule, so the heaviest debuff in the game was sitting there unreachable, and if it had fired, it would have landed with no explanation. It has a proper entrance now. Running on Fumes. A new career event that catches you at the end of a long stretch at work. Book a weekend with no signal, or push through and carry burnout with you. It does not wear off on its own. There are exactly two ways out: any leisure you actually book, the cheapest hike included, or leaving the job. The condition's tooltip says so, so you are never left guessing what to do about it. The whole game on a keyboard. Unplug the mouse and you can still finish a run. Every slider, card grid, side rail and window takes focus. Arrow keys move the selection the detail pane is describing, ] and UI scale. Settings > Display has a "UI scale" picker: 100, 115, 125 or 150 %. Windows fit themselves to whatever size you pick. Two demo reviewers went looking for this and did not find it. Now it is there. Bigger text out of the box. Every text size in the game is up two points and the dock icons went from 16 to 24 px, so you can read the thing at 1080p without opening Settings at all. The Marketplace and Classifieds boards moved to a fixed two-column grid so a job card has room for its pills, approval bar and wage. A category with more than four listings scrolls. The Executive Summit Retreat is the top of the hustle ladder now. It used to sit on the main education board as a sixth degree field with a 240k price tag. It belongs after the Investor Program, so that is where it lives, with a gold band and a price that matches the rest of the chain. The fixes: The mouse pointer on a Retina MacBook was drawn at twice its size. macOS measures a cursor in points and Windows measures it in pixels, an...

Your job now has events of its own

Build 0.5.1708. Most of this one is your job. Events used to happen to you regardless of what you did for a living. A barista and a CTO got the same month. Three of the jobs you can hold in the demo now have events written only for them, forty four in total, with their own art, and they only draw while you actually work there. The coffee counter, the rideshare wheel, the IT help desk. The regular who tips in advice instead of money. The 3 a.m. airport run. The printer nobody else can fix. Seven new conditions you can walk away carrying: a caffeine dependency, a night-rate streak, a bad back, ringing ears, a top-rated-driver badge, and the reputation of being the IT guy for the whole building. Getting laid off is not only an office thing. Work drying up is now written for the trades, service, acting and athletic careers. Six office events also stopped firing at people who do not work in an office: the gift collection, the HR survey, the layoff, the two lent-car stories, the message sent to the wrong chat. In exchange, the coworkers-invite-you-out evening reaches every job that has coworkers. The education board posts one card per path. Each licence, each degree ladder and the new entrepreneur chain get a single slot showing the next course you can actually reach, instead of four rungs of the same ladder elbowing each other off the board. Open one and you see the whole branch with your position in it, so you can tell where a course leads before you enroll. Short courses teach you something. Both driving licences, hospitality, logistics and copywriting drip attribute points while you study, each into the attribute the job they unlock cares about. A six-course entrepreneur branch. Side hustle basics, haggling, car flipping, real estate, buying a business, and an investor program at the top. Every credential you finish pays out for the rest of the run: more from gigs, then cheaper leisure, cheaper vehicles, cheaper rent and houses, no fee on business stakes, no broker fe...

Net Worthless comes out on November 16

Net Worthless comes out on November 16. Before anything else, thank you. For the reviews, for the wishlists, for the bug reports, for the hours you have put into the demo. More than a thousand of you have played it since July 31, and the number is still going up. The question we get most often is when the full version arrives. Today we can answer it: November 16. To mark that, the game gets another big patch. A lot of it is visual: every vehicle in the Marketplace now matches the car in its picture, three new places to live arrive with their finished renders, and the Retail shelves were re-shot. The rest is housing. Buying a home and renting one were both rebuilt, so an approved rental is something you accept instead of something that happens to you, and a move you cannot afford tells you so instead of failing in silence. All of it is playable in the demo right now. If you have not left a review on the demo yet, this is a reminder that you can, right there on its Steam page. It means a lot to us, and it is the single best way to help more people find the game. Thank you. Thanks for the support. Wishlist the game if you have not, play the demo, and tell a friend who enjoys watching a number go up and then very suddenly down. Full patch notes for build 0.5.1208 below. Renting is something you accept now. An approved rental application used to move you in on the spot. Now every approval that month lands in a move-in picker with the moving fee, the locked-in rent and what the place does to your health and happiness, next to a row for staying where you are. Two approvals can no longer chain two moves and charge you twice, and a move you cannot afford says so instead of failing quietly after telling you it worked. Every car is the car in the picture. The vehicle catalogue was re-cast against the finished 3D lineup, all 17 with their own art, prices, tiers and effects unchanged. Two models that had no render are retired. If you own one in an old save, it sells back at what...
