About this game

The only honest job in the joint is the one behind the counter. This isn't it.

Welcome to the commissary at Las Almas State Penitentiary. You run it. By day you fill orders for the most dangerous clientele in the state; by night you move what the warden's catalog doesn't carry. Every transaction is a small decision about who you'd rather disappoint: the inmates who can shank you, or the guards who can fire you.

RUN THE COMMISSARY

Take orders at the window, pull stock from the shelves, work the terminal, and keep the line moving. Order inventory, restock the shelves, sweep the floor before inspection, and squeeze a profit out of ramen, mackerel, and soap. The legit job pays the bills. Barely.

FOLLOW THE RULES AND REJECT RULE BREAKERS

Every customer comes to the window with an ID, and not every ID checks out: match the photo, the name, and the prisoner number before you serve, because a mismatch or a forgery is a write-up waiting to happen. The guards hand down fresh rules every morning, and you're the one who has to enforce them: no service to D-Block today, limited stock per inmate, or more. Some days the yard riots and half your customers never reach the window. Read the day's rules, check every face against them, and turn away the ones who don't qualify, even the regulars who'll make you pay for it.

WORK THE SIDEHUSTLE

Drugs, shivs, nudie mags, smuggled phones. There's a market for everything inside, and you're the only store in the building. Buy low from your supplier, sell high to the yard, and grow a black-market operation one risky handoff at a time. The margins are incredible. So is the sentence if you're caught.

BEAT THE HEAT

Cameras that never blink. A patrol guard who stops to watch. Random spot-checks. An x-ray scanner at the end of every shift. Cover the camera, read the patrol, stash the goods in your pocket, and pray today isn't a search day. Get sloppy and the fines stack, your guard rep tanks, and the scanner starts beeping. Your prison pocket is the safest place to hide and smuggle objects.

MANAGE YOUR REP

Your prisoner rep keeps you protected and your customers loyal. Your guard rep keeps you employed and the searches gentle. Almost every choice trades one for the other: undercharge a regular and the yard loves you, but the guard watching just saw it. Let either hit zero and you're done: fired, or shanked.

STACK CASH AND PLAN YOUR WAY OUT

This is a job with an exit strategy. Smuggle the right parts past the scanner, build your tools in the quiet of your cell, bribe the right people, and assemble everything you need to walk out of Las Almas for good. The catch: every part you carry is a part that can get you caught.

KEY FEATURES

  • 50+ named regulars — every inmate has a face, a grudge, and very specific opinions about ramen, from gentle giants to motormouth hustlers to the guy who counts the cameras out loud

  • Three crews, one store — the yard's factions each need something only you can stock; pick your side in prison politics and live with what that costs you

  • Hands-on, first-person shopkeeping — grab it, ring it, bag it, slide it under the glass; every sale (and every smuggle) happens in your own two hands

  • Two economies, one building — deadpan institutional bureaucracy above the counter, a thriving, ridiculous criminal marketplace under it

    Demo Patch v0.2.3

Demo Patch v0.2.3 The first public weekend of the Joint Venture demo brought a wave of reports from you all, and this patch clears every one of them. Thank you for playing, and keep them coming. Fixed Ultrawide is unblocked. On 21:9 and 32:9 monitors in fullscreen, character creation cut off below "What Are You In For?" and the Register Inmate button sat off screen, locking you out of the demo on its very first screen. The whole UI now scales correctly at any aspect ratio: character creation, the payment terminal keypad, dialogue subtitles, and the feedback button all stay on screen. Standard 16:9 is completely untouched, and a couple of edge cases on 16:10 screens (including Steam Deck resolution) got fixed by the same pass. Thanks to Alex and Kid Milli for the reports. The pallet jack no longer lets go mid-push. Moving your mouse while pushing the jack into the truck would silently release your grip, over and over. Your hands now stay on the handle no matter what the mouse does. Let go by pressing the interact button again, or just ride it to the end of the track. Thanks to Cro0ked and Meekro for pinning this one down. Nothing gets lost outside the map anymore. A hard-thrown item could clip through a wall seam (one broom famously escaped at the fridge corner) and become unreachable forever. Escaped items are now automatically recovered right back to where they left the play area. Thanks to Pnuttgoes for the broom's obituary, which turned out to be premature. Tray items can't get stuck in the tray. When an impatient customer storms off, whatever was on their tray now scatters onto your shop floor as recoverable stock instead of occasionally wedging inside the sliding tray. Improved Hold E to open the commissary. Opening the window gate is now a short hold with a progress ring, so a stray tap right after talking to someone can't fling the store open before you're ready. Boxes finally tell you what's inside. While you carry a box, the crosshair shows a live count of ...

The commissary needs test subjects (playtest signups are open)

The commissary is understaffed. That's where you come in. I'm a solo dev, and Joint Venture has hit the stage where it needs to be played by people who aren't me, ideally before I talk myself into calling it finished. So I'm opening early playtest access and looking for a first crew willing to break it. New here? Joint Venture is a prison-commissary sim. You run the shop from behind the window: fill inmate orders, manage your stock, and turn a profit, all under the cameras, patrols, and pat-downs of a Papers, Please rule-machine. Then, when the right customer leans in, you move contraband under the counter, because every sale buys another piece of your escape. What testing actually looks like: Early and rough. Things will break. Finding out where is the whole job. You play, you tell me what feels good, what feels off, and what's a bug. No NDA theater and no hoops. Just honest feedback from real players. How to get on the list: Drop your email on the access list and I'll reach out when the next build is ready to hand over. ➜ REQUEST PLAYTEST ACCESS Not up for testing but want to watch it come together? Hit Wishlist up top so the launch doesn't sneak past you. You'll be contacted when required.
