About this game

Petrix

You are a leucocyte. The battlefield is a petri dish. The enemy is everything else.

Dive through procedurally-escalating Rifts, fighting off swarms of viruses, bacteria, and fungi as you build toward devastating late-game power. Every kill earns Aether and Mutagen — spend them between dives at your Safe Zone to permanently reshape how you fight.

Choose your mutation. Commit to one of four elemental paths — Fire, Frost, Lightning, or Shadow — each with its own skill tree and a run-defining Tier 4 ultimate: scorch the arena with Solar Flare, freeze it solid with Absolute Zero, chain lightning through Tesla Storm, or vanish and strike with Shadow Shroud.

Face down real bosses. Four boss archetypes — Virus, Bacteria, Fungus, and Splitter — each fight differently and demand different answers. Push deep enough and you'll face two at once in a full-blown Outbreak.

Arm yourself. Stack up to seven auxiliary weapons alongside your beam — chain lightning, deploy turrets and mines, launch homing missiles, summon orbiting satellites, and more — and find the combinations that turn a desperate dive into a one-cell army.

Learn what you're fighting. Every boss and mutant strain you defeat unlocks an entry in the Compendium — real microbiology, decoded one kill at a time.

Key Features:

  • Four mutation paths with deep, exclusive skill trees and unique Tier 4 ultimates

  • Four core boss archetypes plus elemental variants, with dual-boss Outbreak fights in deeper Rifts

  • Seven auxiliary weapons to mix and match alongside your primary beam

  • A 50-entry Compendium of real microbiology, unlocked through play

  • Full gamepad and keyboard/mouse support

  • Steam achievements

Petrix 1.0.2 — Frost Effects Cleanup

A visual fix release. Every Frost skill had square-shaped glitches in its effect — flat edges, drifting blocks and crawling specks that had no business being there. All three are cleaned up, and the ice looks the way it always should have. Fixed Frost Cloak — the aura no longer shows flickering straight edges around its outer rim. The glow now fades out properly instead of being cut off. Frost Dash — the ice trail was surrounded by a square field of sparkles that crawled around each patch, and the patches themselves were clipped flat on their sides. Both are gone. The trail also blends into one continuous sheet of ice now, instead of repeating the same crystal pattern over and over along your path. Frost Nova — the expanding ring was sliced into a square shape during the last moments of its expansion, and had a visible crack down one side. It now expands as a clean, unbroken ring. Blocky ice textures — the frost detail in all three skills was rendering as coarse, drifting squares. It is now finer, smoother, and holds up on a wider range of graphics hardware. No balance or gameplay changes in this update — Frost behaves exactly as before, it just looks right now.

    SMALL UPDATE / PATCH NOTES

Balance Tesla Storm (Lightning ultimate) reworked. It was clearly the weakest of the four Tier 4 ultimates for the same 400 Mutagen, and part of it simply wasn't working. Discharge damage increased from 120 to 300 per enemy (still scales +5% per level). The discharge now stuns every enemy it hits, in line with the rest of the Lightning path. Chain arcs between enemies now deal damage — 45% of the discharge to both ends of each arc, up to 3 arcs per enemy. Previously the arcs were purely visual and dealt nothing. Chain range increased from 350 to 420, so arcs form across looser packs. Kills from the discharge now trigger on-kill effects, so Thunderstrike chains off it. The discharge is now a true 360° burst — a shockwave ring and bolts in every direction. It previously only threw bolts toward nearby enemies, so against a pack on one side it read as a cone rather than a storm. Fixed Run kill counts were too low. Only kills from your beam and a couple of aux weapons were counted, so anything finished off by a mutation skill, a zone hazard, or damage over time never reached your end-of-run total, victory screen, or local high scores. Every kill now counts, whatever landed the blow. Lightning stuns no longer cancel an active frost slow when they wear off. Thunderstrike was missing from the Mutation Paths list in the in-game Help panel. Performance Roughly 45% less CPU work per enemy drawn, which shows up as a steadier frame rate when the screen is full of enemies. Every cell was building its outline twice per frame; it now builds it once. Purely internal — nothing looks different. Changed New game splash artwork at 2560×1440, displayed fullscreen instead of framed by black bars. The studio logo now shows on white and fades cleanly to black before the game splash, rather than the two crossfading into each other. Updated to Godot 4.7.2 and GodotSteam 4.21.
