About this game

Every wave, the hive gets smarter.

Hivebreak is a top-down survival shooter, and the thing coming at you isn't dumb. It watches how you win. It sees which gun you lean on, where you're hiding, how your base is laid out, and it builds the next wave to take all of that apart. Play it alone or bring up to 4 friends into online co-op.

The hive learns, and that's the whole point

Camp a chokepoint and it starts tunneling under it. Rely on one weapon and it sends the exact thing that shrugs it off. Wall yourself in behind turrets and the siege brood digs in, hijacks your guns, and turns them on you. Whatever kept you alive last wave is usually the reason the next one hurts. You adapt or you die.

Guns you actually own

You start with a Sidearm and work your way up to stuff that chains between targets, sets the floor on fire, and clears the whole screen at once. Every weapon is a real thing you keep and upgrade across four tracks, so you can dump your cash into the one you love and turn it into something nobody else is running.

Build a character that fights the way you do

Spend skill points on perks that quietly bend the rules in your favor. Then pick one signature move you can fire whenever you need it: blink out of a swarm, knock everything off you, or drop a bomb right where it counts. Between waves you cash in and fortify, and then you get to watch how fast the hive takes it apart anyway.

    Hivebreak now speaks 9 languages

The hive was always multilingual. The rest of the game has finally caught up. New languagesDeutschFrançaisEspañol (Latinoamérica)Português (Brasil)Русский日本語한국어简体中文 Everything is translated — menus, the HUD, the tutorial, the shop and armory, every enemy and weapon name, and the end-of-run report. Hivebreak picks your Steam language on its own. Want a different one? Settings → Display → Language. Auto hands it back to Steam, which is also your way out if you end up somewhere you can't read. Also fixed along the way: Chinese, Japanese and Korean text renders on Linux and Steam Deck, pressing Enter to confirm those characters no longer launches the game early, and key hints show the letter actually printed on your key. Be kind to the translatorsThese are brand new, so a line here and there may read strangely. If something is wrong or runs off the screen, post it in the discussions with a screenshot and we will fix it.

    The Guided Onboarding Update

New Guided tutorial — a real practice run, in the real game, from your first step to clearing wave 1. It teaches by making you do it, nothing is input-locked, and it doesn't touch your career stats. New players get offered it on launch. Hive Mind wave preview (wiki) — a playstyle mixer that shows what the Hive would send you, with per-mob deltas vs. classic mode, a counter-matrix heatmap, and a seed from your own last run. Changed Sprinters are now feral hounds — new hand-authored top-down sprite with a bounding gallop, pounce-lunge attack, and sprawling death. Weapon resale refunds your upgrades — selling returns 80% of the base cost and 80% of everything you sank into upgrading that instance.

    The Prep & Polish Update

My biggest quality-of-life pass yet: start every run with a shop and a plan, a fully reworked consumable control scheme, and a wave of automation that handles the busywork so you can focus on the killing. ⭐ Headliners Pre-Wave Prep Phase. Runs now open into a shop intermission before wave 1. Spend a difficulty-scaled starting balance to build a base and buy your first gun before a single zombie shows up, then ready up when you're set. Wave-1 guns are properly unlocked, and Play Again re-enters the same prep. Consumables, reworked. Grenades are now Ctrl, healing is Space — tap for the smart default (best grenade at your cursor / best heal), hold to open a wheel and pick manually. Readying up moved to Enter. Live ability demos in the lobby. Hover an ability while picking and a tiny in-engine clip plays it out: Phase Jump blinking clear of a dog pack, Repulse Nova swatting acid, Bomb Spec wiping a line of walkers. Know before you commit. 🔫 Combat & Weapons Pump shotgun overhaul. ~2x fire rate, +50% pellet range, and a rebuilt 3-layer blast you feel in the chest. The auto & sawn-off inherit the new boom. Hands-free ammo. Empty mags auto-reload; partial reloads top off instead of dumping loaded rounds; and every gun fully reloads instantly the moment a wave clears — all still drawn from your real armory reserve. 🎯 Controls & Feel Quick-tap heal/throw fires the smart pick with no wheel flash, each with a bespoke confirmation sound. Grenade blast preview snaps to your cursor the instant you press Ctrl — no more aiming blind. Fixed: pressing Shift inside a shop/armory/perk/turret menu no longer casts your special into the arena or burns its cooldown. 🏰 Base & Turret Command Click a turret between waves to open its command menu — hover shows a footprint highlight, coverage ring, and a "⚙ Tune" label. Rich MAX-OUT preview. Hovering a turret's max-out button shows a before-to-after stat breakdown and total cost — and now works even when you can't afford it, so you know what yo...

1.1.0 - Multiplayer improvements, Bugs & Late game balancing

Hivebreak — What's New Since 1.0 A stability and polish pass focused on keeping the late game smooth when the screen is packed with enemies and defenses. ⚡ Performance & Smoothness Improved P2P input sync — Fixed a bug where friends connected to you would feel a delay in their inputs getting sent to the server is now fixed. It should feel smoother as a joiner now. Smoother late-game sieges — the wall-breaking enemies no longer re-scan the entire battlefield every tick to pick their target. In big waves with lots of turrets and walls up, the server does far less redundant work, so the action stays fluid when it used to bog down. Less rubber-banding near your base — your local movement now matches the server exactly around damaged structures. A wall clinging to its last sliver of health is no longer mistaken for passable wreckage, so you won't get snapped back after walking into something that "looked" broken. Cleaner movement through rubble — destroyed structures no longer falsely block your predicted movement, killing a source of stutter and mis-prediction when pushing through a wrecked defensive line. 🐝 Smarter Enemies Burrowers dig straight under your walls — instead of awkwardly tunneling around your defenses, they now beeline for their target and dive under the shell the moment a wall gets in the way. Gnawers hunt your turrets — they route around walls to find an opening and go for your turrets first, only chewing through a wall as a last resort when your defenses are fully boxed in. Late-game breach assault — from the deep waves, the Hive sends its wall-breakers in first to crack your fortress open, then floods the fast rushers in behind them. Turtling all game no longer makes you a spectator. Anti-turtle waves play fair — the Hive's pressure logic no longer gives up on a well-defended, stationary fortress. 🎛️ Quality of Life Sell whole stacks — shift-click a tile in the armory to sell the entire stack at once. Consumable wheel fixed — opening the quick-wheel n...
