About this game

Portentum is a deck-building auto battler where you craft a roster of legendary cryptids with one-of-a-kind abilities and send them into battle.

Every culture on Earth has a monster it swears is real. Portentum puts them all in one deck. You draft cryptids from around the world, build them into a team, and send them into battles that play out on their own. Your job is everything that happens before the first die lands.

FOLKLORE FROM AROUND THE WORLD

Mothman. Bigfoot. Nessie. The Chupacabra. The Yeti. The Kasai Rex. If somebody's uncle saw it in the woods in 1973, there's a good chance it's a card in Portentum. Every creature gets hand-painted art and its own way of wrecking the other side of the board.

A RACCOON NAMED JIMOTHY

Every other cryptid in Portentum has spent centuries avoiding cameras. Jimothy walked down a Seattle street in July and let seven million people watch.

DECK BUILDER

Before a run, build a deck of 30 cryptids and mushrooms. Each cryptid is equipped with its own unique ability to deal damage, heal, summon a minion, manipulate the dice, and many other one-of-a-kind effects. Abilities can trigger upon a roll of the dice, another ally taking damage, or an enemy healing an ally. There are endless combinations and broken strategies to be discovered.

SHOP, BUILD, BATTLE

The shop deals a hand from your selected deck for that run. Spend gold to play cards from your hand, build a warband, and then send it to fight. Battles roll dice, resolve abilities, and continue to run until one team remains. Win ten rounds to win the run. Lose five, and you are out.

FOREVER EVOLVING META

Keep playing, and earn card packs, unlocking entirely new deck-building possibilities to discover combos that are completely broken. Every warband you build joins the pool that other players face, so the meta keeps shifting as new strategies surface.

A LEGENDARY SOUNDTRACK

Find yourself in flow state to the unique sounds of Portentum. It's as unique, eerie, weird, and mesmerizing as many of the cryptids you'll find in Portentum.

Thanks for playing Portentum at PAX West

PAX West wrapped on Monday, and we're still catching up on sleep. Thank you to everyone who stopped by, sat down, and rolled some dice with us. It was the first time we'd shown Portentum to anyone outside the studio, and it went better than we'd hoped. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/46245586/35201a232a6ebed63b48f6d21706e3f436eef6bd.jpg The stations at the booth. Every one of those PCs is playing offline. Seven stations, no internet We ran six or seven stations, depending on the day, and every one of them played Portentum without a connection. The convention center wanted roughly $1,000 for four days of internet, and we weren't about to trust the show floor Wi-Fi with a live game, so in the weeks before the show we scrambled to make it run completely offline! {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/46245586/a19a392456dd84aa5ab83d63cb2d4826512ff63f.gif A run in progress. The best compliment is someone's time There's a lot competing for your attention at PAX, so every minute someone spends at your booth is a minute they chose not to spend somewhere else. It was not uncommon to look over and see someone still at a station an hour after they sat down. That's the thing we'll remember most. Two awards and a lot of interviews Boss Rush Network named Portentum their Game of the Show, and sidequesting.com gave us their Team Choice Award. Close to 40 people from press outlets came by for interviews over the four days. For a game we announced a month ago, we did not see that coming. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/46245586/9c363b17ef23e21ecd3fc4bbb1c7a3b23383c22c.jpg Game of the Show, courtesy of Boss Rush Network. A thousand Jimothys We printed 1,000 exclusive Jimothy cards for the show and handed out every last one. Seattle knows its raccoon. If you got one, you have one of a thousand. Where you can play next The next chance is Steam Next Fest, October 19 to 26, with a free demo right here on the Steam page. Portentum launches on Steam in Q4 2026. If you played at the booth and want to keep up: wishlist Portentum, follow...

Meet Portentum: a cryptid deck-building auto battler

Portentum is a deck-building auto battler starring cryptids. You collect a deck of monsters, roll and manipulate dice to fire off their abilities, and watch your team auto-battle round after round. A yeti damaging the entire board with a blizzard. Meet the cryptidsCryptids are what broke us out on Fortnite. Hunt Bigfoot was the game that took Snowfall from zero to something, and Hunt TRex followed right behind it. Ever since, we've had players asking us for more cryptid games. So we built one with all of them in it. Bigfoot, Nessie, Mothman, the Chupacabra, and a long list of others are all in here as units you can collect and build around. A raccoon named JimothyEvery other creature in Portentum is a legend nobody has ever quite managed to pin down. Jimothy is our one modern cryptid, and he's completely, verifiably real. He's a real raccoon from the Ballard neighborhood in Seattle, and in July he became the most famous animal on the internet. Someone filmed this unusually round little guy waddling down the street, it racked up over seven million views in a matter of days, and then came the memes, the merch, an entire subreddit that filled up with thousands of posts in a week, and "hot Jimothy summer" plastered all over the city. The Mariners even put him in a team hat. Watching a raccoon take over my city while we were quietly sitting on a cryptid game of our own felt like a sign. So Jimothy is now a card in Portentum, and we moved our announcement up to go public while he's still having his moment. If you're here because of Jimothy, welcome. He's the newest name on a long roster of legends. Jimothy earning his keep in battle. His signature ability is called Trash to Treasure, naturally. Balatro meets a card gameOur lead game designer, Matt, is a serious card game player and had wanted to make a card game for a long time. We started tinkering with one as a side project, and before we knew it the side project had quietly become the main project. The dice came from m...
