About this game

IDLE. UPGRADE. DOMINATE.

BreakEven is an idle ARPG for those that love the grind: kill, loot, upgrade, hit harder, repeat.

Combat happens passively while you focus on what matters; what to wear, where to invest your points, which build to pursue.
Step away and your hero will continue the fight. Return later and you'll find yet another upgrade waiting to be applied.

It plays like an action RPG but respects your time like an idle game.

Depth when you need it, invisible when you don't.

CHOOSE YOUR HERO

Each class plays completely differently with their own gear identity and progression tree; plate and steel for the Knight, robes and staves for the Mage, distinct weapons for the others.

Play as one, or all of them, and customize to your heart's content.

A COMBAT ENGINE WITH REAL DEPTH

  • 7 status ailments: Burn, Poison, Bleed, Freeze, Paralysis, Sleep, and Fear, each with a unique debuffing effect that slows attack speed, drains HP over time, reduces damage, forces misses and more.

  • ARPG-level math: Critical Strike chance, Critical Strike damage, Penetration, Dodge, Attack Speed, Life Steal, Spikes and Regeneration all work as a loot game veteran would expect.

  • Dozens of enemy and boss types with their own sets of attacks and ailments to exploit.

LOOT WORTH THE GRIND

  • 6 rarities from Common up to Ultimates - the deeper you go, the better the loot floor.

  • Deep affix system with item levels, set items, and unique gear to find and collect.

  • Crafting and Smithing: Create new gear, reroll existing items, and upgrade materials into precious gear components.

  • Forbidden Stashes overflowing with loot to unlock, centered around the dopamine of finding a big drop.

DESIGNED TO RESPECT YOU

  • No seasons, no chasing behind resets and stolen progress.

  • No forced prestige or character wipes. Everything you achieve is yours forever.

BreakEven is the grind without the FOMO. Idle when you can, hardcore when you want.

Start a hero. Find one more upgrade. Break even. Break everything.

    Patch 0.11

Patch 0.11 · The bag is a grid · gear has home stats · three new stats · smithing pays before 93 · Brewmaster's CowlA follow-up to the relaunch, built from your feedback of the first week: the inventory rebuilt around the mockup, three new gear stats, crafting and mining feeding the fight again, one new unique, two achievements that no longer punish you for opening chests, and every new line translated into ten languages. New ContentThe bag is a grid · 12 × 7 cells per page and gear takes its real size (a weapon 2 × 4, a chest piece 2 × 3, a ring one cell). Drag to arrange, drop onto a single piece to swap, your layout is saved. Pages beyond ten appear only while the first ten are full and vanish again as space frees up. The shared chest uses the same grid, with a green or red preview while you drag. The paper doll and the item card · the doll is a compact block with a rarity frame on every cell. The item card leads with the slot's headline stat (Defense on chests, Max HP on helmets, Speed on gloves, Dodge on boots, Crit Chance on rings, Crit Damage on amulets, damage per second on weapons) and shows rune lines as stone runes. Compare, filters, chest, loadouts and lists share the dark look. Three new gear stats · Mana on Kill and Damage to Mana roll for the Archmage, Shade Thorns for the Necromancer: a Shade that steps in front of a blow bites back. All three show in the hero panel and can be pinned to the combat panel. Brewmaster's Cowl · a new helmet unique for every class. Each potion sip grants +20% Dodge for the potion cooldown, scaled by your Potion Power. Wear it with Thornwine for the flask build. Classic tabs · a switch at the lake and in Settings brings back the four old tab stacks with the fan on hover, the town button sits in the Town stack. The town stays the default. Two first-contact cards · The Hub and The Rampart explain themselves the first time you open them. BalanceHome stats · random affixes that match a slot's own stats roll 20% higher on that ...

    EARLY ACCESS V0.0.1 Relaunch

EARLY ACCESS V0.0.1 · The Rampart, the town, the wiki · gear carries its own power · the Vendetta hunts youThe relaunch. BreakEven starts its Early Access count at V0.0.1 with the biggest update it has had: a tower-defense game inside the game, a town instead of a tab bar, a handbook that is a wiki, uniques and ores rebuilt, upgrades baked into every item, a ten-tier Descent, Renown, the Gilded, the Vendetta, and a fight-based Power number that never makes you wait. New ContentThe Rampart · a tower defense at the town wall. Place six of ten defenders drawn from your classes, familiars and wardens, hold 15 lives over five waves, then go endless · depth is your score. A new map every calendar day in one of four shapes (winding road, fork, twin gates, crossing) and three difficulties. The first full hold each day pays 180 Marks, your best depth feeds Renown and two new honors: Warden of the Wall and Foes at the Wall. The town · the tab bar is gone. Fourteen themed buildings open everything, doors light up on hover, cards open over the town, and the Darkness switch shows the night falling with windows, lanterns and fires. Every hero of your roster walks the streets with their name over their head · click one to switch. The handbook is a wiki · 35 articles, one per page, a search that returns a hit list instead of a wall of text, and cross-references between articles. The Vendetta · slay 300 foes in a row in the field and one of five hunters calls you out at the Tyrants: its tier is the act you were in, you have 12 minutes, and the first win over each hunter claims a permanent power. The Gilded · a rare foe (about one in 1,800 kills) that pays 40× gold and always drops an Ultimate. Renown · your personal score from Tyrants, Ordeals, the Vaults and the Rampart, shown in the Hall of Honors with a breakdown. Six ores · Copper, Iron, Azurite, Tungsten, Meteorite and Starmetal on top. The Starmetal Seam replaces the Starmetal mine, Starforged rings and amulets, Ultra helms fr...

    BreakEven - Idle Patch 0.1.7

Patch Notes v0.1.7 · The Darkness opens up Dear Adventurers, Two days built from your reports and reviews. The Darkness no longer belongs to one class, the goal tracker finally names the next zone, the upper trees pay like trees, and a dozen things that were true but invisible now say so on the spot. Nothing here needs a new save. Balance The Darkness is flatter from zone 2 on. Monster health beyond the first zone was compressed hard, the Void down to about a seventh. A mid-game Knight or Necromancer now farms zone 2 and the start of zone 3 instead of scraping one monster; the endgame Knight gains T10 drops in the Void. Skills from powder no longer stack. Ironveil and Bastion count once, at your highest piece, so gear skills sit within the +5 headroom of the tree again. Sets still add on top. The Manyeye Band counts resistance overcap only up to 300%. Two bands multiplied each other to +2291% Bonus Damage. Same rule the Coincursed Band got for Gold Find. The Descent has a floor and a ceiling. Monster health keeps climbing per tier (it stopped above tier 23), gold is capped, and negative gold from a wrapped counter becomes the cap. Tyrant gold is paid per second of the fight. 80% of what your own best Void farming spot earns, so a long hunt pays like a long farm. Uniques from Tyrants roll at the normal Unique chance on every kill, no first-kill guarantee. Uniques drop nearly twice as often. 0.065% per kill instead of 0.036%. '+N Skill' follows one rule. +1 below item level 99, +2 from 99, +3 only on Darkness drops from zone 4, +4 only from Ancient Chests. Never boosted, never raised by upgrades; re-rolls and contracts follow the item level. Upper trees pay like trees. From Willow on, each felling drops far more logs (Elderheart 10 to 54, Sunspire 12 to 72) and sawing takes seconds instead of minutes. Log prices drop to match, so gold per hour is unchanged and what grows is material. The Huntsman draws the bow again once his Marks are spent. A finisher that empties th...

    BreakEven - Idle Patch 0.1.6

Patch Notes v0.1.6 · A Shared Chest for all your heroes Dear Adventurers, Six days of work in one build. Your heroes share a chest at last, every locked system tells you how to open it, the loot filter became a rulebook, and a Tyrant hunt no longer pays a hundred times what the Void pays. Underneath, all twenty-nine monsters and the Darkness were rebuilt, and a handful of long-standing bugs from your reports are gone. New Content A Shared Chest for all your heroes. 600 slots on the Inventory tab, owned by your account and carried by the Steam Cloud. Click or drag to store, click or drag to take back, and nothing inside is ever auto-sold. Every hero earns the key by slaying the Golem in the Coast, and a hero may only take out what their own zones would drop. Locked systems are visible now and say what opens them. Stronghold, Apocalypse, Ancient Stash, The Void, Theorycraft, Test build and Contraband show a lock, the condition, and a taste of what waits behind it. Loadout slots two and three are trophies for your first Tyrant and your first Ordeal tier. Contraband opens earlier. After the blacksmith's commission and a single wager instead of three. The Fence's Case unlocks with the alchemist's wager. The loot filter is a rulebook. Filter and Auto-Sell share one card. Any filter becomes a Sell or Keep rule, rules can be paused or deleted, and the export code carries all of it. Set pieces got their own rarity threshold, and new Runes arrive locked. Resources on the Inventory tab. Spoils, Powders, Marks and Skulls with their stock, and hovering tells you where each one comes from. Auto-Hunt for the Tyrants. With the switch on, a won hunt starts the next one, and the hunt keeps going while you are away. The Welcome Back card reports the night, and says why if your hero fell. The Glassworks and the Athanor work while you are away. Every save gets a base share, and the upgrades raise it from there instead of gating it. Blacksmith commissions in bulk. 1, 5, 10 or 25 at a tim...

    BreakEven - Idle Patch 0.1.5

v0.1.5 The Huntsman picks a stance The Huntsman stops being a pile of numbers. His four keystones are two stances now, and you choose one. Every quiver changes a rule about your Marks. And the Glassworks no longer goes quiet the moment the eighth board is sealed. The Huntsman Four keystones, two stances, one choice. At Range (Deadwind, Phantom Veil) or In Blade Reach (Bladeflow, Ambush). Forging one quenches the other two. They always pulled against each other-Ambush sets the Gap to zero, Deadwind pays you for every Gap second left-and nothing in the game ever said so. Points spent on Gap could be worth exactly nothing. Every quiver now changes a rule about your Marks. Broadhead spends them all in one finisher. Deepstrike pays for every one you hold. Huntsman heals when you spend one. Warden carries them into the next fight. Featherlight sets one even when the target evades. Phantom refills them when you vanish. Only the quiver you wear counts. Nodes that buy Gap seconds now say when a keystone switches them off. The Glassworks It keeps paying after the last board. With all eight sealed, Emberglow itself raises the diamonds your Holdfast finds-up to another 8% on top of the boards. Every Prism you have ever earned makes Reigniting stronger, up to +50%. It counts what you earned, not what is left, so spending on the Skill Tree never costs you a thing. The kiln remembers. Every 8000 orbs on a board lifts that board's floor by one grade. The bad runs were the problem, not the average: board 8 went from 29 hours in the worst case down to 7. Your best grade ever counts towards sealing - reaching grade 28 on an earlier board is no longer thrown away when you move on. The chain chance cap is 0.62 instead of 0.59. A slice of the Lucky Ash and Kiln Luck you were paying for had nowhere left to go. Quality of life Ordeals got "Run it again", the Descent got "Descend again" right on the result card. The Descent button names the gold toll and stays locked when you cannot pay it....
