About this game

Sortilège

A dice duel where beating someone takes their dice.

Sortilège is a duel fought with dice. Each turn both players reach into the same shared pool of boons, commit their rolls, and try to break the other side first. Nobody builds a private hand in advance. You are both reaching into the same bag, and what you leave behind is what your opponent picks up.

Alone, you climb an academy. Its staff are the opposition, and their academic rank tells you exactly how much trouble you are walking into, from a nervous First-Year up to the Elder Geometer waiting at the top.

Beat any one of them and their entire set of dice is yours, in one go. The ladder is a wardrobe you rob on the way up.

Health carries the whole way up, and there is no free patch-up. Healing is bought with the same gold that buys dice, so a sloppy win on the second floor is still with you on the eighth.

The route up is yours to choose. Floors fork and rejoin past elite doors and shops, and you commit to a path rather than walking a line.

You open on three d4 and 20 health. By the boss floor a measured climb is carrying six or seven dice with three d20s among them, and one d20 will not finish the Elder Geometer. Every win pays gold, and every coin is a choice between staying alive and getting stronger.

  • A branching solo climb, or an online duel with a friend

  • The same rules both ways, so beating the ladder teaches you the duel

  • Matches short enough to fit between other things, and a full climb is an evening

  • Full controller and mouse-and-keyboard support, and it runs on Steam Deck

A free demo is playable now.

    Update 0.8 - The Climb

Update 0.8 - The ClimbThe solo mode used to be a sequence of fights that was kind of scripted and got very repetitive over time. We wanted to tweak that a little so it is now a climb with a shape: a branching route up the Sortilege academy floors. Levelling your dice and keeping your HP between rounds! We think this creates a much more replayable system with a lot more variety in how the games go down. Pick your way upThe run is a map now. Floors fork and rejoin, and you commit to a route rather than walking a line. Ordinary fights, elite doors, shops and the finale all sit on it, and the stairwell rises around you a storey at a time as you climb. Nothing resets between fights. Your health, your dice, your boons and your level all carry, so the second floor is still with you on the eighth. Beat them, take their dice There are ten opponents on the ladder, from a nervous First-Year up to the Elder Geometer at the top, and their academic rank tells you how much trouble you are opening the door on. Each one wears their own set of dice. Win, and the whole set is yours in one go. Not a piece of it. The ladder is a wardrobe you rob on the way up. What staying alive costsShops are a room of hanging signs, each price on its own lantern. The dice services get more expensive every time you use them in a run. There is no free patch-up between fights, and finishing a fight with health left pays better. Every coin spent staying alive is a coin you did not spend getting stronger. How far it goesYou start with three d4 and 20 health. By the top the table looks nothing like that: across 400 measured climbs, the first floor averages three dice and almost no d20s, while the boss floor averages six or seven dice with three d20s among them. One d20 will not finish the Elder Geometer. You will need a few. So choose wisely along the way to make sure you have enough power! It looks better tooBoon cards have been rebuilt: the old parchment is gone in favour of dark, rarity-tinted cards that...

0.7.0 - Sharper Duels, Lasting Runs

Your Boons Are a Deck NowThe old random grab-bag of roll bonuses is gone. Your deck is built to rules: it opens with 12 commons and 3 rares, and when you run it dry a fresh deck is drawn with 12 commons, 3 rares, and 2 epics. The bonuses finally care which side of the table you are on, splitting into attacker and defender roles.Sword & Shield - role-split roll bonuses, with Epic Greatsword and Greatshield (+2) variants.Swordbreaker & Shield Splitter - destroy an opponent's boons by type.Sacrifice Die - destroy one of your own dice to destroy one of theirs.Shackle - lock a die's size. It can still be destroyed, just never resized, and it shrugs off Cripple and Forge. Shackled dice wear iron caps and banding so the board stays readable. Solo Runs You Can Carry ForwardYou can save and resume a solo run now, so a run is no longer a one-sitting commitment. Rewards are single-use, and there are new ones to chase: upgrade-all, full-heal, and permanent boons. Your permanent boons and reward deck carry across the whole run, and every fresh match starts you with the permanent boons you have already earned. Six New TablesNew surfaces to duel on: walnut, oak, leather, onyx, charcoal, and black glass. Each arena now carries its own lighting and ambience, so the table sets the mood before a single die lands. Sharper Dice, Brighter MagicReworked XP particles and bar animations. A perfect roll (every die maxed) now pays top-tier bonus XP, and poker-hand XP scales with your boon level. The plasma total now glows the dice nearest to it.A new heal sound, plus rebalanced channel volumes.Held dice get a crisp outline with a lock badge. Full ChangelogBoons & deckRemoved generic roll-bonus boons in favor of attack/defend specific bonuses. The deck is prebuilt by rules instead of a random selection. Decks start with 12 commons and 3 rares; once exhausted, a new deck is drawn with 12 commons, 3 rares, and 2 epics.New boons: Sword / Shield (with Epic Greatsword / Greatshield +2), Swordbreaker ...

    Swipe Right on Dice

New little thing we put up. A site where you swipe through dice one at a time, right on the ones you'd want to roll, left on the ones you wouldn't. Find one you like? Give it a name and drop it in the comments. Best ones might end up in the game! These aren't the dice from the game though. They're 1,500 we strategically generated, and we're watching what people pick to work out what actually makes a die fun to look at and roll. Whatever you lean toward feeds into how we design the real ones. We will run it for a few weeks then we'll post what we found back here. Honestly just curious which styles people like / dislike. Some of them are pretty strange. Have at it. Found a good one? Drop it in the comments, we want to see the weird ones.dice.sortilege.io
