We got to see more of Guild Wars 3, the upcoming MMORPG from ArenaNet, and here’s everything that got us excited. Guild Wars 3, the MMORPG follow-up to Guild Wars 2, developed by ArenaNet, has been a long time coming. Guild Wars 2 is one of the most beloved MMORPGs of all time, with years of support that kept its community engaged. Now, ArenaNet is finally getting ready to bring Guild Wars 3 to the masses; its initial unveiling was just a few months ago at Summer Game Fest 2026. We got to attend a preview to see more of the game; here’s what we learned. The preview was a gameplay slice that was debuted at Gamescom, focusing on gameplay mechanics currently in Alpha. Guild Wars 3 will be playable with both mouse and keyboard and controller, as it marks the first time Guild Wars comes to console on PS5. It acts as a prequel, set long before the events of the first two games so that new players can play without worry. You’re a Veilwarden, the first guild, tasked with keeping the ... Playable Species Spotlight: Asura
Hello, Guild Wars® community! I'm Liz Baker, senior narrative designer on Guild Wars 3™, with a peek into the asura of the Orrian golden age. Just as Tyria looks very different in this time before the Exodus of the Gods, so does this species of diminutive scholars. While the majority labor to expand their beloved depths throughout the vast subterrane of Tyria, the asura of Orr represent the more adventurous and insatiable of their ilk—an expeditionary lineage who went where their kin dared not go in pursuit of an emerging force that would come to transform their entire civilization: magic.A New (Old) LookIn Guild Wars: Eye of the North™, we met the asura after they emerged from an extended period of exclusively subterranean living. Their appearance has been shaped by the Depths of Tyria: no fur, not much height, large eyes, and pointed teeth. But in the present of Guild Wars 3, over a millennium before Primordus's stirring, asuran society has a more balanced relationship with the surface. Though fossorial at their core, the asura do venture above ground for a variety of reasons: business, pleasure, curiosity. So, the average asura you meet in Orr will be of a different stripe than their evolved descendants, figuratively and literally. Rougher around the edges, a little taller (though still not eye level with humans), a hair furrier. On the inside, however, they very much resemble the species you know and love with their large, inquiring minds and even bigger ambitions. This is especially true of the asura who migrated to Orr before the start of Guild Wars 3. It was that insatiable urge to discover that kept them going through a decades-long journey of trial and error, from the Maguuma Jungle to the Shiverpeak Mountains and, finally, to Orr. The Big DigOrr first blipped on the radar of asuran consciousness during their initial expansion of the depths around 300 BE. Tunnels were stretching out in every direction from the heart of the Maguuma Jungle; no small feat befo...Read full article on Community Announcements (lcardy)AnnouncementsOfficial
Playable Species Spotlight: Kodan
Greetings, good people of Tyria! I'm Erin Amschlinger of ArenaNet's Narrative team. As part of our series on the playable species of Guild Wars 3™, we're going deep on a species whose outsized presence in our announcement trailer at Summer Game Fest may have caught your notice: Tyria's much beloved bearkin, the kodan. While longtime Guild Wars 2® players may be well acquainted with their headstrong forebears on the isles of Janthir, the kodan of the Orrian golden age are a unique case in the history of the species—a population called south to the wilds of Orr, prompting a resurgence of belief in an otherwise faithless people. As you set paw onto Orrian soil, you too shall begin your own journey. One that's sure to be retold by the fireside. But before you set off to make history, you'd best be acquainted with your own.Heeding the Voice or Embracing the SilenceOriginating in the Far Shiverpeaks, the kodan are, broadly speaking, a culture defined by their faith. Kodan worship Koda the Creator, a deity they believe to be the sole fashioner of Tyria and all the natural and magical life that inhabits it. Devoting the whole of their civilizational effort in service of this creator, the kodan are among the most capable fighters on Tyria: ferocious, intelligent, and driven by unshakable conviction. Per their belief, a direct connection exists between Koda and a blessed few among his tribes of followers, called Voices—chosen tributes attuned to the mind, thoughts, and will of their creator. Guided by these leaders, the kodan interpret the will of their god as a mission for the whole of their people: the duty to watch over all of Tyria and foster an enduring balance in the natural harmonies of the world. This connection is an almost universal feature of kodan settlements across Tyria, with one notable exception: the bearkin of the isles of Janthir. Featured prominently in Guild Wars 2: Janthir Wilds™, the kodan of Janthir were brought to those fabled lands as a result of a no...Read full article on Community Announcements (lcardy)AnnouncementsOfficial
Playable Species Spotlight: Humans
Greetings, Tyrians! Danny Barnes here from the Guild Wars 3™ Narrative team, excited to share some of the first details about the various playable species that populate the Orrian golden age. Today we're kicking off with humans—a curious, driven, and resourceful people hailing from a realm beyond the Mists. As a player taking up the role of a human in this period of Tyrian history, you're surrounded by a wholly new and intensely magical world with unexplored horizons in every direction. Your settlements are growing. Your guilds are rising. With every laid road and raised temple, your steady progress seems to reaffirm the notion that you can make a home here. And yet, everywhere you go, the world seems to ask…can you? Humans in previous Guild Wars® games are a people defined by vast kingdoms, bitter wars, proud traditions, and devastating losses. Guild Wars 3 shows us a different angle, a different time: humanity before its great fall. In this era, humans are not yet defending a dwindling empire from encroaching forces. They're newcomers. Explorers. Dreamers. A people still learning what it means to live in a world that was not originally their own. An inspiring story, to be sure, but not without its complications. From Out of the Mists Humanity did not come to Tyria alone or by accident. They were brought here by their six gods: incredibly powerful beings who looked upon this world and found it rich with magic, mystery, and possibility. Though the exact nature of their flight from their world of origin is not well understood, for the humans of this era, one truth matters most: their people survived the Mists, and Tyria is now their home. To be human in Guild Wars 3 is to inherit the faith and determination of people who followed divine light into an unfamiliar realm. Some carry that inheritance with humility, others with pride, and many with questions. But since they've arrived, nearly all humans have come to understand on some level that Tyria is both a gift and a ...Read full article on Community Announcements (lcardy)
