About this game

The night the kingdom fell, you alone survived. From the ashes of a broken throne, forge a deck, master the elements, and march back into the dark to face what took it from you.

Kingdom of Ashes is a single-player roguelike deck-builder where every run is a climb through a kingdom that has been broken into countries. Where you are decides what you fight, what the ground does to you, and what the fight pays. Draft cards, stack relics, chain resonances, and take a country for yourself — or be unmade in it.

Key Features

  • Roguelike Deck-Building — Draft your opening deck card by card, then reshape it every fight. 220 cards in the base game, across seven elements plus neutral and utility schools. No two runs build the same engine.

  • Fifteen Fallen Heroes — Each with their own starting core, signature mechanic, and traits that unlock as Mastery levels climb. A Pyromancer plays nothing like a Bloodseer, and nothing like a Runecaster who counts elements instead of copies.

  • Elemental Resonance — Play three cards of one element in a single turn to trigger Resonance. Or take the Runecaster's Rune Chain and be paid for diversity instead, across 3, 4, 5 and 6 unique elements.

  • A Kingdom of Countries — Fifteen regions, six of them in the base game, and a region is not a colour swatch: it is six hazards that belong to it. The Riven Crags come down past your guard. The Undermarch buries what you carry. The Wrack Strand corrodes what you hold.

  • Ninety Map Hazards — A combat node can carry up to three, badged on the map before you step in, and every one of them pays: more gold, better rarity, more Ash. Climb the ladder and they get denser — a fourth rolled hazard, then one pinned to the elite, then one pinned to the boss.

  • Claim the Ground — Win a run in a region and it remembers the highest Ascension you took it at. That claim has three tiers, and each one gives that country's own named blessing a better chance to fire — Fortify, Fury, Sure-Footed, Wellspring, Equinox, and eleven more, one per region.

  • One Board, Eighteen Node Kinds — A 5×14 map with a spine you can never skip and two branch columns either side: the near column is risk, the far column is reward, and nothing that pays out is reachable without a fight in front of it. Battles, elites, shops, rests, shrines, treasures, mysteries, echoes, mimics, gauntlets, armies, duels, merges, scriptoriums, bounties, crucibles and hunts.

  • A Bestiary That Belongs Somewhere — 44 foes in the base game, every statline derived from one threat-and-shape table rather than hand-typed, and every region keeps its own boss. The ground names its keeper before you draw a card.

  • Persistent Meta-Progression — Earn Ash from every run, win or lose, and spend it at the Forge. Bank Essence to unlock legendary cards in the Card Shop. Every hero carries a Passive Tree — Mastery, Doctrine and Conquest — whose points are minted by playing that hero, not bought.

  • One Ascension Ladder — A0 to A20, account-wide rather than twenty separate grinds, and a lever screen that shows exactly what each rung adds before you take it. About ten wins to the top, not four hundred.

  • Built to Be Read — Card faces print what the card will actually do right now, not what is printed on it. Five text sizes, six reading fonts including OpenDyslexic and Atkinson Hyperlegible, and a reduced-motion toggle.

  • Localized in 7 Languages — English, Korean, Japanese, Chinese, French, German, Russian.

  • Three Expansions — Scorching Region, Overflow and Day & Night each add their own mechanic family, their own three countries with their own bestiary, and (for the last two) their own heroes. Together they take the game to 20 heroes, 418 cards, 43 relics and 107 foes.

Built for One More Run

Tight runs. Ground that fights back. A soundtrack of ember and ruin. Lose, learn, forge, return — and this time, hold the country you died in. The kingdom is ash, but the crown is still down there, waiting.

MAJOR UPDATE: Four Statuses — 310 Cards, a Living Battlefield, Reforged Packs

FOUR STATUSES Every status this game has added since launch arrived locked behind a pack. GODS, The Crossing, The Ancients — each brought new words, and each kept them on its own shelf. The fifteen heroes you started with have not learned one since Blind. Four arrive now, one for each corner of the board, with 310 cards to play them. Behind them: an arena that finally moves, an idle battle screen that stopped burning a fifth of your CPU on nothing, and three expansions that at last say out loud what they grew into. Everything in this post is free. Nothing below is a second purchase. 🌀 Four New WordsOne per quadrant of the status board — two you carry, two the enemy does. Each was chosen by subtraction: nothing on the board did this yet. 🌀 Momentum — yours. Every hit you land deals +1 for each card you played earlier this turn, to a ceiling of +5. Play the cheap cards first and close with the heavy one; the order of your hand is finally worth a number. 🛡️ Sunder — yours, and it hurts. Every Shield and Protection you gain is halved. Nothing has ever cut a guard before, and the biggest swings in this batch print it as their own price: hit like that and the next two Defends are worth half. 🪨 Adamant — theirs. No single hit you land may exceed 8. A 24-damage legendary lands 8. Three hits of 7 land 21. Chain walks past it, rot ignores it entirely — it is a wall that asks what kind of deck you built. 🦠 Fester — theirs, from you. Burn, Bleed and Poison tick 25% harder per stack, up to double. The rot decks get a second axis that is not "more stacks", and everyone gets a printed answer to Adamant. 🃏 310 Cards, and Six Foes to Spend Them OnA shared shelf of 160 — 20 in each of the eight elements, five per status, offered to every one of the fifteen base and fusion heroes. Ten exclusives each, 150 in all — every hero gets their own answer to all four, in their own colours. Nightblade's never heal. Paladin's heal by striking. Runecaster's span all eight elements, because his po...

GODS — Out Now: Six Gods, 240 Cards, One Rule Each

GODS — OUT NOW Two of them came back on their own. These six want paying. Hestia, Khione, Ares, Demeter, Apollo and Athena are playable today — six gods, forty cards each, and one rule apiece that no other hero in the kingdom is allowed to break. Zeus, Hades and the whole Pantheon continent stay free for everyone, exactly as they shipped. ⚡ Six Gods, Forty Cards EachA god does not share cards with the roster, and does not share cards with the other gods. Forty of its own, the shared shelves, and nothing else in the pile. 🔥 Hestia — Molten. Every stack reflects 10% of each hit you take. Reach ten and the hearth takes the house: stacks cleared, 10 Damage to you. The whole hero is a bet on staying at nine. ❄️ Khione — Permafrost. One stack, shed at your next turn, and while it holds the enemy's ability does not fire — its ordinary attack still lands. You are not stopping the monster. You are choosing which turn it gets to be one. 🩸 Ares — Frenzy. At turn end every stack spends at once for 10% of your missing HP apiece. Five stacks on a body that is nearly gone is the whole hero — and at full health it does nothing at all. 🌿 Demeter — Spore. No cap. No decay. Your card Damage climbs 1% per stack, all fight, on everything. Six quiet turns, then a card that should not have killed anything. ☀️ Apollo — Flare. Ten stacks, +5% Holy Damage each, one falling off every turn — ×1.5 at the ceiling. Spore's opposite number: fast, narrow, and starving the moment you stop feeding it. 🛡️ Athena — Vanguard and Foresight. Vanguard cards are playable below cost; the shortfall is billed to next turn's Mana. Foresight is how you stop paying it — three stacks, three debts forgiven. 🎴 Borrowed Signatures — no two runs deal the same handEvery god run rolls two of the other gods as lenders and takes five cards from each — four rares and a legendary — retyped to your own element and playing by your own rules. Ten cards a run that were written for somebody else's kit, and the lenders are rolled...

MAJOR UPDATE — The Ancients: Five Legends, 155 New Cards, Daily Quests

THE ANCIENTS The kingdom burned, and somewhere past the edge of its maps five people were already legends. Gilgamesh, Amaterasu, Cleopatra, Lu Bu and Yi Sun-sin fight in a school this kingdom never learned — no Resonance bar, no reservoir, fifteen Signatures instead — and they bring two countries, twenty-one enemies and nine new statuses with them. All of it is free, and so is everything else in this update. 📊 The Crossing → The AncientsBeforeNowHeroes3035, and 41 with the GODS DLCCards1,1961,351Enemies222243Countries1921Schoolseleventwelve — Ancient, the only one with no barBattlefieldstwo pictures, every fight21, one per countryDaily goalsnonethree, every three hoursCard arta stamp in the upper halfthe whole card 🏛️ Five LegendsEvery school in this game charges something. A Resonance bar, a reservoir, a Heat gauge, an Eclipse orb. This one charges nothing at all — it spends that value up front, on three Signatures per hero that are simply always on. Gilgamesh, King of Uruk — everything you own is a weapon. His damage rises 5% for every Relic on the tray, and his reward screens roll a relic 55% of the time instead of 35%. The only hero whose meta layer is part of his combat maths. Amaterasu, Goddess of the Sun — nothing stays on the board. Every end of turn she strips a debuff off the enemy and hits for 5 if one came off, and clears one off herself to leave Burn behind. The only hero who never wants a stack to sit. Cleopatra VII, The Last Pharaoh — take its swing, then charge it for dying. Charm drops the enemy's attack by 1 and raises your damage by 1, per stack. Wealth pays 4 extra Gold per stack when the marked enemy dies, and never decays. Lu Bu, The Great Warrior — the first card you play each turn resolves a second time, free. Three times in ten that copy lands on him instead. A card played from a hand of exactly one has its numbers doubled. Yi Sun-sin, The Great Admiral — the wall that shoots back. The first card each turn that grants Shield grants the same ...

MAJOR UPDATE — The Crossing: Five New Heroes, 279 New Cards, a Game Story

THE CROSSING There was always a sea, and the game never once said what was on the other side of it. Five heroes have crossed it. They bring three schools nobody in the kingdom fights with, the first critical hits the game has ever had, and two countries that are on no map you have played. All of it is free, and so is everything else in this update. 📊 The Pantheon → The CrossingBeforeNowHeroes2530, and 36 with the GODS DLCCards9171,196Enemies201222Countries1719Schoolseighteleven — Chaos, Lux and AirCritical hitsnoneup to two and a half times damageCards the thinnest hero sees77120 to 157Story—119 pages, six chaptersForgeeleven items, buy them allsix either/or pairsHero portraitone, foreverfive, climbing with mastery 🌀 Five Heroes From Across the SeaEvery school in the game was a resource or a slow burn. Nothing ever asked you to gamble. These five do nothing else. Maddener Delirium — every Mutation she applies lands doubled, and she hits harder for every separate debuff on the enemy. She also fights under a permanent Flux: every swing she makes lands anywhere from half power to half again. Exposer Lumen — the Exposed she inflicts primes two critical hits instead of one. Until the seam is open, she barely scratches. Tempest Zephyr — a free dodge at the start of every fight, and everything that gets through him is permanently cut. He will never hit hard, and he does not need to. Trickster Cyclone — play a Chaos card and an Air card in the same turn and he pays you a Mana and a card for it. Everything he builds wipes at the end of the turn. Gale-Seer Prism — her crits land at double, and her Turbulent makes the enemy miss most of the time. Any turn neither of her statuses is live, she takes half again as much. Three new schools: Chaos gambles, Lux exposes, Air denies. Six new statuses arrive with them — Confusion, Mutation, Flux, Exposed, Airborne and Turbulent. And the game has critical hits now. A crit starts at one and a half times damage and can reach two and a half...

MAJOR UPDATE — The Pantheon: Zeus, Hades, Ash Riddles, 94 New Foes

THE PANTHEON IS HERE Something older than the kingdom has walked back into it. Zeus and Hades arrive today — free for everybody — along with the ground they walk on and everything already living there. Six more gods are on their way behind them. This is the largest update Kingdom of Ashes has had, and it brings a second way to play. Two new countries, ninety-four new enemies, fifty-four hand-built puzzle boards, every existing DLC grown, and the Resonance system rebuilt from the rule up. ⚡ The GodsA god has no strengths and no weaknesses. Every other hero in the game carries a boon and a price. A god carries one power instead, and its whole forty-card library exists to feed it. Playable today, free for everyone: Zeus, God of the Sky — chains lightning and hangs Bolt on what it hits. Hades, God of the Dead — takes Soul Harvest from the dying and spends it. Zeus and Hades are base game, not DLC. Their eighty cards, the 35 shared Myth cards every god draws from, both new countries and all thirty of the new enemies living there cost nothing and arrive with this update. Coming with the GODS DLC: Hestia, Goddess of the Hearth — Molten burns whatever strikes her. Khione, Goddess of Snow — Permafrost locks an ability away entirely. Ares, God of War — Frenzy pays more the closer he is to dying. Demeter, Goddess of the Harvest — Spore spreads and keeps spreading. Apollo, God of Light — Flare burns bright and burns down. Athena, Goddess of Wisdom — Foresight read out through Vanguard. The GODS DLC is with Steam for review, so those six are not on sale yet. You will see them on the hero screen, locked, with their forty cards each already in the Codex — that is the update arriving ahead of the store page, not something broken. Wishlist the DLC and you will hear the moment it goes live. 🏔️ Two New Countries, and Something Already ThereThe kingdom gains the Olympian Heights and the Tartarean Deep — the roof of the world and the pit under it. Only a god can reach them, and thirty n...
