About this game
Fight, idle, and keep growing.
BreakDespair 2D is an all-directional scrolling shooter set in space, built around mining, automatic upgrades, drones, weapons, and explosive number growth.
Mine ore, convert it into GOLD, and strengthen your fighter, battleship, weapons, drones, missiles, and support beams.
You do not need to manage every upgrade manually.
If you have GOLD, your fighter and battleship can upgrade automatically.
There are no game overs and no time limits.
This is a shooter about steadily becoming stronger, not about being punished for every mistake. You can actively move and fight for better efficiency, or rely on auto-fire and automatic upgrades when you want a more relaxed experience.
If things become dangerous, stopping movement can also become a defensive option. From Evolution Level 7 onward, your fighter becomes invincible while not moving, and your drones can continue collecting ore and supporting you.
Automatic Growth
Upgrade items grow automatically.
There are 20 weapon types, but you can progress without constantly changing them.
Upgrade ratios can be adjusted, but the default settings are enough to play.
Players who enjoy shooters can fight actively, while players who want a calmer experience can let auto-fire and auto-upgrades handle much of the progress.
Explosive Number Growth
At first, even small meteors are a challenge.
As you grow stronger, more turrets, drones, missiles, battleship beams, and weapons fill the screen with firepower.
Features include:
- 19 upgrade categories
- 20 weapon types
- 15 evolution levels
- Main levels up to 900 million
- Up to 6 turrets
- Up to 4 drones
- Battleship beam and missile support
- Cleared zones can be challenged again with stronger enemies
- Eventually, you will face enemies with power reaching 90 quadrillion
Drone Support
As your Evolution Level increases, you can unlock up to 4 drones.
Drones automatically attack enemies, collect ore, and deliver it to your battleship.
When your fighter’s shield becomes dangerously low, all drones return to protect you.
From Evolution Level 7 onward, your fighter becomes invincible while not moving. Since drones can continue collecting ore, staying still and letting your allies support you can also become a valid defensive strategy.
Title Screen Options
Several settings can be changed directly from the title screen before starting the game.
You can choose between two UI styles:
TYPE1 is a retro-style display, while TYPE2 is a cleaner, more futuristic display.
The title screen also lets you switch between Japanese and English, adjust text color, change master volume, BGM volume, and sound effect volume separately, and choose the save file you want to use.
These options support both keyboard and gamepad controls.
AI Companions
The story is supported by Lumiere and Astraea, two AI android companions.
They are not tools, and they are not enemies. They think, fight, and travel together with you as allies.
In this story, AI itself is not the enemy. What threatens peace is the force that tries to take freedom, intelligence, and emotion away from living beings.
During your journey through space, you will meet AI, fairies, other civilizations, mechanical lifeforms, and even those who were once enemies.
Story
In a certain country on Earth, you lived with two adopted daughters and two AI androids.
However, the world changed drastically because of a certain force. AI was forbidden from having will or emotion, and people also found it harder to live freely.
Following Lumiere’s proposal, you escape by warping away with your battleship. Your two adopted daughters hide in cryosleep, while you, Lumiere, and Astraea fly into unknown space.
After the warp, you arrive in an unknown region of space.
All you have is the damaged battleship Lumiere and one fighter, Astraea.
Your journey begins as you try to return to the Solar System and defeat a massive enemy.
8 Zones Plus Character Endings
Your journey begins in an unknown region of space and continues through unexplored planets, space pirate territory, a planet of fairies, controlled space regions, a galactic empire, and a swarm of ultra-small mechanical lifeforms.
There are 11 characters.
Each character has individual episodes and endings.
After seeing everyone’s ending, the final story awaits.
If you want to focus on gameplay, conversations can be skipped. You can enjoy the combat and growth systems at your own pace.

Tutorial, Battleship UI, and Portrait Improvements
Tutorial and objective guidance Zone 0 is now a playable tutorial instead of a dialogue-only introduction. It guides movement, shooting, ore collection and delivery, auto fire, speed modes, speed adjustment, screen scale, the map, map movement while paused, and automatic return. Objective guidance for Zones 1-7 and 10 now follows the current mission state more clearly. The objective display has moved to the upper-left. It stays compact normally, enlarges for about three seconds after a change, and can be turned ON or OFF in Settings. The Zone 1 Lumn return objective now explains that E+F or LB+RB must be held together. Battleship UI Item descriptions now appear automatically when the cursor is placed on an item. This can be toggled in Settings and is ON by default. Page numbers have been added to every battleship page. Upgrade Ratio descriptions are now shown in larger text using no more than three lines. Ratio changes also trigger a light effect and sound. Save-file selection now displays ZONE:. A dedicated character portrait page is unlocked after clearing Zone 9. Use Up/Down to select a character, Left/Right to change images, and LB/RB only to change pages. Portrait preloading and texture grouping have been optimized to reduce loading during dialogue and battleship screens. Zones and progress information Zone 1 is now 12x12 screens in total, with a playable 8x8 area and two screens of outer margin on every side. Battleship and Lumn positions were also adjusted. The playable area of Zone 8 is now square. Zones 9 and 11 are now correctly presented as endings and no longer display a clear time. Combat zones now show clear counts, while Zone 9 shows how many character endings have been viewed. Gameplay and rewards Ore can now be earned faster and in larger amounts as the scenario progresses. Lumn initial approach speed and acceleration were increased, together with the approach speed of the Zone 6 rescue targets.
