About this game
A card game grandparents and grandkids both know
Žolík (pronounced ZHOH-leek) is a beloved Central European rummy played for generations across Slovakia and Czechia. The Slovak name literally means Joker — and jokers are the cards that make every hand a puzzle.
Now on Steam with friend lobbies, customizable rules, AI bots for solo play, and full Slovak + English interfaces.
How it plays
Build sets (three or more cards of the same rank) and sequences (three or more in a row, same suit), play them onto the table, and lay off cards onto opponents' melds. Be the first to empty your hand each round. Whoever finishes a multi-round match with the lowest cumulative score wins.
Jokers are wildcards — but specific rules govern how they swap, burn, and carry between rounds. The game rewards patience, observation, and the occasional well-timed bluff.
Features
- 2–4 player online multiplayer — host a Steam lobby, invite friends through the Steam overlay. No IP, no port forwarding.
- Solo mode vs AI — practice against 1–3 bots offline.
- Three rule presets — Slow (the classic Central European version), Fast (modern, looser opening), or Custom with twelve tunable rules.
- Reconnection — drop and rejoin mid-match without losing your seat.
- Bilingual — full English and Slovak interfaces, switchable any time.
- Steam achievements — eleven goals tracking wins, milestones, and party tricks.
- Steam Cloud — your settings, custom rules, and stats follow you to any PC.
Why play digitally?
Žolík has lived around kitchen tables for decades. The digital version isn't here to replace that — it's here for the moments when the table isn't possible. Family across borders, friends in different cities, or just a quiet evening alone. Same rules, same feel, with Steam carrying the cards.

Update 1.3 — Custom mode now supports up to 6 players
✨ New Up to 6 players in Custom mode (was 4) — set the seat limit right in the lobby's custom rules panel. Choose your deck size — play with the classic 2 decks or add a 3rd for bigger tables. The lobby recommends 3 decks once you set 6 players. The table now resizes and repositions opponents automatically for 5 and 6-player games, so everyone's hand stays visible and readable. 🐛 Fixes The lobby now warns you (and blocks Start) if your chosen player count / hand size wouldn't leave enough cards to deal — no more games starting with a card in someone's hand missing. During the deck cut, the waiting screen now names the actual player cutting instead of just "Opponent". The end-of-round score screen stays centered with 6 players. Update 1.2 — endless rounds, smoother melds & lots of multiplayer fixes
✨ New Endless Rounds — play a match with no round limit (now the lobby default). Take a stray card back to your hand (Fast & Custom mode) — pull a leftover card off the table to reuse; it's highlighted so you remember to play it discard. Endless Rounds — play a match witbby default). Take a stray card back to your hand (Fast & Custom mode) — pull a leftover card off the table to reuse; it's highlighted so you remember to play it back or use it as your final discard. Cards glide into place when you lay them onto a meld. 🃏 Combinations and Play Cards now fall into the hand you are aiming for, even if the hand overlaps — no more laying on the wrong hand or falling under the one you took a card from (Quick and Custom modes). Editing melds can no longer scramble a valid one or leave an illegal one behind (Fast & Custom mode). Unfinished melds glow amber, and the "can't discard yet" message names exactly which cards to fix (Fast & Custom mode). Fixed opening scores for an Ace-low + joker sequence, and a joker now keeps its place when you extend a run. A four-of-a-kind no longer locks up your turn. 🌐 Multiplayer, lobby & spectating Everyone in the lobby now sees who's ready, and the button clearly reads Ready / Not ready. Starting a rematch with the same group nevious game's scores. ng the deck" screen no longer gets stuck or duplicated, and handles a player disconnecting mid-cut. Host can kick a player (with confirmation), disconnected players show their real name, and a rematch no longer starts a client with a missing bottom card. Smoother visual sync overall. 🐛 Other fixes Fixed match-win achievements sometimes g Discard pile: a quick click no longer grabs the top card by accident — drag it to your hand to take it. Update 1.1 — Fast & Custom modes
Thanks for waiting. Version 1.1 is now available on the default branch. What's new⚡ Fast mode — no opening threshold, meld from turn 1, pull jokers off the table straight into your hand. 🎛 Custom mode — set every rule yourself in the lobby: round count, hand size, joker count, pure-sequence requirement, and more. 🐛 Bug fixes and stability work — rules now sync on reconnect, achievement anti-grind, hardened against malformed RPCs. Help me polish it Žolík is mostly a solo project, so there are a lot of combinations I haven't fully tested — Custom mode in particular can produce rule sets I've never played. If you hit anything weird (visual glitches, desyncs, wrong scoring, crashes…), please post in Žolík → Discussions. Repro steps + a screenshot help enormously. Thanks for playing. Good luck at the table!Read full article on Community Announcements (Valtrion Digital)AnnouncementsOfficial
Fast Mode and Custom Rules coming in v1.1
What's next for Žolík Thanks to everyone who's already at the table. The lobby's "Mode" dropdown shows two grayed-out options — Fast and Custom — and we want to walk you through what each of those will unlock in v1.1. Both will arrive as a free update for everyone who owns the game. ⚡ Fast Mode A looser, snappier ruleset for when you want shorter rounds: No opening threshold — meld whenever you can. Pure sequence is not required to open. Lay-offs allowed before you've opened. Meld manipulation — drag cards between melds on the table, split a combination with a right-click, merge melds together by dragging one onto another. Reclaim jokers from table melds back into your hand by swapping in the represented card. Undo Turn button to revert all your table edits before you commit. All splits and merges stay validated — you can't leave the table in an illegal state. 🛠 Custom Rules For house-rule purists — tweak every knob the host wants: Opening threshold (0–200 points), starting hand size (8–20), joker count (0, 2, 4, 6, or 8). Pure-sequence requirement on/off. Minimum-turn rules for drawing from the discard pile and for melding. Lay-offs before opening, must-use-drawn-card, bottom card on/off, joker-take burning, meld manipulation, jokers-allowed-to-stay-in-hand — all individually toggleable. Settings are saved per-host, so your favourite ruleset carries over from session to session. When? Soon™. We'd rather ship it polished than ship it on a date. You'll see another news post here the day the update goes live — and the dropdown options unlock automatically. What about v1.0? The current build is the traditional Slow ruleset — 51-point opening with a pure sequence, 14-card starting hand, 4 jokers, 4 rounds. Nothing about how you're playing today changes. v1.1 is purely additive. Feedback If there's a house rule you grew up with that isn't covered by the Custom toggles above, drop it in the discussions / community hub. We'd rather hear about it now while the schema is sti...Read full article on Community Announcements (Valtrion Digital)
