About this game
Build upwards. Optimize everything. Survive the system.
CityPunk is a vertical, tile-based city-building puzzle set in a dense cyberpunk megastructure. Instead of expanding outward, you stack districts layer by layer, working within tight space constraints while balancing the needs of residents against the demands of a powerful corporation.
Every placement matters. Buildings interact with their neighbors in all directions, creating a system where small decisions ripple outward into complex outcomes. Designing an efficient city is not just about growth, it’s about mastering the relationships between structures, resources, and people.
At its core, CityPunk blends the clarity of grid-based placement with deeper systemic planning. Each district becomes a self-contained optimization challenge, where you manage limited space, local production, and stability to enable further vertical expansion.

From Puzzle Prototype to Deckbuilding Citybuilder
Looking Back: March to July 2026 Looking forward is not always easy, but looking backwards can be surprisingly reassuring. CityPunk in March 2026 compared with July 2026. Comparing the game today with where it was in March makes the progress much easier to see. The tower has gone from a fairly simple spatial prototype to something that is starting to resemble the dense, interconnected city I originally imagined. More importantly, the design itself has become much clearer. After working through the GDD, prototyping systems, and reconsidering what makes the game interesting, I am now much more convinced about the direction: CityPunk is becoming a spatial deckbuilding citybuilder with roguelike structure, rather than a straightforward puzzle game. The city itself should be the engine. Cards provide buildings, policies, and upgrades, while placement determines how they interact with the six neighbouring blocks. That change in direction makes the design challenge considerably harder, but it also gives the game much more room for meaningful decisions, different strategies, and cities that actually develop their own character. The Deckbuilding Focus The next major goal is proving that the core deckbuilding and city-building loop is fun before adding more content. A turn should revolve around selecting a card, placing a block, resolving its adjacency relationships, updating production and resident demands, paying ongoing requirements, and making upgrades that shape the city engine over time. The main resources currently include Population, Energy, Supply, Capacity, Leisure, and Commerce. Rather than existing independently, these systems are intended to push and pull against each other. A major design target is making different decks create genuinely different cities. For the first prototype, I am focusing on two strategic extremes. Corporate Compression Corporate Compression is fast, dense, efficient, and unstable. The idea is to grow aggressively, exploit adjacency bonuses...Read full article on Community Announcements (McDev)AnnouncementsOfficial
CityPunk Goes to German Dev Days 2026!
CityPunk will be playable at the German Dev Days in Frankfurt, Germany, on the 22nd and 23rd of July.We want to inform you that the game is making progress, especially in the visual design department. However, implementation in the game is the bottleneck right now, mainly due to personal circumstances such as a relocation. But financing for the project has been resolved, so everything is clear from August onward to push more content and move the game forward! The general design and direction of the game have taken on a coherent shape, and we are happy to bring these concepts to life soon! Our goal is to make a cozy but challanging game experience. So please stay tuned!Read full article on Community Announcements (McDev)
