About this game

The hotel is overrun. Ghosts and otherworldly creatures have spilled into the rooms, and the hotel has gone into lockdown. All ten floors, full of animal-like guests, now trapped inside. Something in the fabric between worlds has torn. The nightmares of the dead are bleeding into the lives of the living, and the guests of Hotel Paraíso are caught in the middle.

Move through the hotel floor by floor, uncover what went wrong, and free each cursed room before the problem spreads beyond these walls. The hotel has secrets older than this crisis, not everything haunting the Paraíso arrived tonight. Specter fights feature a unique tactical puzzle combat system.

Characters are the soul of Hotel Paraíso. You will meet:

Lopp

Hotel Porter

Works the hotel floor and looks after the guests. Notices things others don't. He has powerful magic abilities, which is useful, because this situation is going to require them.

Tatami

Resident Pianist

She has spent her whole life within these walls and knows the hotel better than anyone. Her curiosity has no limits, and she is never afraid of trying something new.

Xi Long

Paranormal Investigator

He knew something strange was happening here, and arrived just in time to find out. Decades of studying spirits and ghosts make this situation more fascinating than frightening. Oh, and he has a gun.

Hotel Paraíso is a 2.5D adventure, a 3D environment brought to life by 2D hand-drawn characters. Exploring the hotel is part puzzle, part conversation: the guests have their own stories, and paying attention matters. There are some characters that hide really strange secrets...

When you encounter ghosts, the game shifts into a turn-based puzzle combat system. Character and enemy colors determine how fights work, a rock/paper/scissors logic layered with skill upgrades and ghost reactions. Chain attacks, trigger explosions, find the most efficient path through each room.

Devblog #2 - The Combat Challenge: Puzzle or Tactics?

A few weeks ago I shared how I designed the overall concept of Hotel Paraíso in the first devblog. I want to focus now in the combat, which is arguably the most unique area of the game, given its special mix of elements. I had a lot of fun creating the combat system, which is almost feature-complete at this point, but also I had a lot of struggles. Let's start with the most basic question...What Genre is this Game?I will be honest, I am having a lot of trouble to define the game. At first glance, many people think it's a Plants vs Zombies type of game, given how the grid is organized with the characters on the left, the enemies on the right, and the shot indicator. It's maybe not the best first impression, considering the "mobile feeling" it creates, like it might be a bit of a simplistic game. But it is very far from it. It's turn based, not a cooldown + realtime game with tower defense mechanics. In general, I usually define it as a "tactical puzzle" combat. This is the best I can say to quickly build an idea on the mind of someone that reads it. Both in tactical games and in puzzle games you usually need to take your time to think what to do.The soul: a puzzlePuzzles are a very broad genre. You can have something very straightforward like Tetris or Lumines, but also something super sophisticated like Blue Prince or The Witness. Here, the term "puzzle" means that you are operating with a grid in which everything (including you) is a puzzle piece. That was the initial prototype I had for Hotel Paraíso, which you can see below. The soul of the prototype, and the final game is to match colors, which is a very puzzley mechanic. You need to consider what to do every turn, what is the best action to take in order to win. Your colors are a set of 3, same as the enemy colors. This gameplay is common to games like Lumines, Bust a Move or Candy Crush. However, in this game the puzzle pieces are not regular pieces, and here is where the tactical aspect comes in.The heart: Tact...

    Massive demo update!

Hello! I've been working hard on the development of Hotel Paraíso, which is currently around 50% complete. I will share more info later, but today it's time to get a fresh new version of the demo. Why updating the demo nowI stopped caring about the demo after the Steam Next Fest last June, not expecting more players afterwards. However, some people are still playing it from time to time. The metrics suggest that about one third of the players don't engage with the demo.Of course it's impossible to know why: maybe they don't like the combat, or they find some technical issue, or the tutorials make it confusing (this one I saw happening myself). So I used some time to get the demo up to date with the latest features I have been adding to the game, as well as a reworked tutorial and more playable content. What's new (patch notes)New combat rooms After you clear floor 10 and reach floor 9, where you play as Xi Long, a new menu option is unlocked. The game tells you about it, but just in case: Go to the Team menu > Rooms and you'll find a "stage select" kind of menu. Previous room stages can be played again, but a new "Extra" version of those is now available. These are optional combat rooms and are much harder than the story ones!Tutorials changedIf this is your first time playing, the game now features a complete rework of the first two combat stages. Previous tutorial asked you to read a lot and then play the combat. The new one is going to walk you step by step through the two main mechanics of the game: color chain and team management. The combat system is fairly simple, but it's very different from any other game. I didn't realize how confusing it can be when not explained properly. I hope it works better this time around. New customization settingsYou can change now the font or background color for the menus and dialogue. I tried to make sure readability is as clear as possible.New "Inspect" commandDuring combat you can now use the Inspect button (defaults to Q on k...

Devblog #1 - Designing floor 10 of Hotel Paraíso

First things first, thank you to everyone who keeps supporting this project every day, whether by adding the game to your wishlist, reading updates on social media, or playing the demo. Your interest and curiosity about Hotel Paraíso are incredible, and they make a huge difference in helping me through the challenges of game development.I want to start a series of devblogs to share behind-the-scenes details about the development of Hotel Paraíso that I think you'll find interesting. I may be a little late to the party, since I'll be talking about features that have actually been finished for months, but little by little I'll catch up with the current state of development. Above all, I want these posts to be enjoyable to read and, at the very least, spark your curiosity about the game. Why a Hotel for Spirits?Hotel Paraíso isn't just a setting that I thought would be original for this game. It's also a place that reflects my own experiences.I spent a significant part of my childhood living in a hotel owned by my family. Every day I watched guests come and go, stop for coffee at the bar, or celebrate banquets in the large hall on the first floor.Living in a hotel without actually being a guest is a curious experience. Sometimes it's full of activity, while at other times it's completely quiet. Everyone is just passing through except you. You don't just walk down a hallway to reach your room. You know every hallway, and you have access to every room. You also get to see what lies beyond the areas guests never visit: the laundry rooms where the sheets are washed, the restaurant's enormous kitchen, and certain "special" rooms that are never rented out.Hotel Paraíso began with the goal of capturing that feeling for the player. I wanted you to own a hotel without making the game about managing one. This was an idea I'd had floating around in my head for many years, but I wasn't sure how to turn it into a game. Most games set in hotels, such as Fobia St. Dinfna Hotel or Luigi...

    Added Latin American Spanish!

Hello 👋 I have been working hard on the development of Hotel Paraíso and also improving the demo version. And one of the things I realized is: it doesn't have Latin America Spanish! I took for granted that European Spanish would be enough, but I learned that's not the case. So I added a language option removing all European Spanish expressions and words to be more friendly for our Latin American players. I hope that will make the game more enjoyable for you!Other features I've added to the Demo:Swap command is now faster to performCombat camera now adapts to every resolutionFixes to a few dialoguesSee you in the hotel,Azulón

Want to fight specters again? Demo updated with save slots!

First of all, thank you so much to everyone who has already played the Hotel Paraíso demo. Your feedback has been incredibly valuable for me to learn and discover the game’s weak spots. Thanks to all of this, I’m getting to know the "designer side" of many people, your ideas to improve the game feel, proposals for new mechanics, or bugs discovered. It’s being a truly beautiful experience.I keep working on the game's development every single day, while also adding some updates to the demo. Last night I published a new version (v.0.2.0) that includes:Multiple save slots with individual checkpoints: You can now start the game in another slot and reload to any previous moment whenever you want. The final combat music for Floor 8: When I first published the demo, this track wasn’t finished yet, but now it is, and I’ve added it to the demo's final boss fight.Audio configuration options: You can now adjust the volume for both music and sound effects.Small tweaks and fixes here and there.Thank you for your support.
