Football on Paper

Turn-based tactics football. Both managers draw hidden orders during a paused plan phase, commit, and watch them collide at once — every tackle, shot and save a d20 roll. Face a manager AI that marks your danger man, scouts you all season, and never plays the same trick twice.

About this game

Frozen Synapse for football.

You don't twitch a stick. You draw the play — runs, passes, crosses, shots — while the match is paused. Then you commit. So does the opponent, in secret. Both plans run at the same time, in one short animated slice, and dice decide who wins each duel. You never see their orders before they hit yours. You have to read the coach across the table.

Thirty slices. Ninety minutes. Five a side. One pitch that looks like a chalkboard and plays like a war room.

SIMULTANEOUS, HIDDEN PLANNING

The match freezes. You sketch every player's run and action on the tactics board — drag the path, tap the target. The AI is sketching its own plan you can't see. Commit, and both plans execute together: your overlap meets their offside trap, your through-ball meets their interception, all resolving in the same locked slice. There is no reacting after the whistle. You plan for what you think they'll do.

DICE ON THE PITCH — A TABLETOP FEEL

Every contest that could go either way is a d20 + attributes roll: tackles, headers, receptions, shots, saves. Attributes are rated 1-10 and each one drives a real mechanic — Finishing sharpens a shot, Marking widens an interception, Composure bleeds away under pressure. You see the dice. You feel the odds swing. Sometimes the plan was perfect and the roll wasn't — that's football.

AN OPPONENT THAT READS YOU

The headline act is the Manager Brain — an AI coach, not a script. It holds a coached team shape instead of chasing the ball. It sticky man-marks your danger man once it works out who that is. It refuses to repeat itself, so the trick that scored last week won't score this week. It scouts you across the season, learning your habits and countering them. And it plays to a match goal — parking the bus when it's ahead, throwing numbers forward when it's chasing. You're not beating a difficulty setting. You're out-thinking a manager who's studying you back.

A FULL CAREER, NOT A SINGLE MATCH

Take a club through a 6-team league and cup. Train your squad, level players up D&D-style with role-weighted stat and skill choices, work the transfer market, and manage form across a season. Wins compound. So do rivalries.

THE CHALKBOARD TELESTRATOR LOOK

Dark tactics-board aesthetic — you draw plays the way a coach draws them, in chalk, over a foreshortened 2.5-D pitch. Anton for the headlines, Archivo for the body, JetBrains Mono for the dice and data. Clean, readable, and built to make a plan legible at a glance.

WHY IT'S DIFFERENT

Football games sell you reactions. Football on Paper sells you decisions. No dribble spam, no last-second saves you didn't plan — just two managers committing hidden plans and living with the collision. It's the tension of a tabletop wargame, the mind-games of hidden simultaneous turns, and an AI built to be read and to read you back. If you've ever wanted a football game that respects that the real match is won before kickoff, this is it.

Single-player career versus a strong AI. Built by a solo developer.
