About this game

Ashikai is a retro dark fantasy isometric action RPG set in a yokai-cursed feudal Japan.
Inspired by Japanese tales of yokai, we follow Matsuo Shinro, a samurai cut off after an ambush. You will fight through cursed roads, caves, and ruined strongholds to find Lord Kuroda Nagatsugu and make your way back to your family, while precise katana combat and hard choices shape every step of the journey.

The more you refine your timing, the deadlier combat becomes. Perfect reads create brutal punish windows, clean deflects steal momentum by burning through enemy stamina, and every strike starts to feel decisive.
As Matsuo Shinro grows, he learns combat skills and sharpens them through mastery, refining how he attacks, defends, and recovers under pressure. Matsuo Shinro evolves faster with perfect timings and calculated battles. Clear real-time feedback makes every exchange readable during the fights.

Ashikai pits you against both human fighters and oni horrors, each with their own roles, strengths, and combat stats. Enemies do not simply trade blows. They react, parry your attacks, dodge your advances, cover for one another, punish overextension, and press their advantage when they sense weakness.
Every encounter is a tactical problem. You are reading formations, disrupting enemy synergy, and preventing the fight from turning against you. Push too far while underleveled, and stronger foes will punish hesitation, collapse on mistakes, and make every bad decision hurt.

Matsuo Shinro can discover over 20 katanas, from humble common blades to rare unique weapons that can reshape how you cut through enemies.
Each blade rolls with its own power, rarity, and combat traits, so finding a new katana is not just a bigger number. It can push you toward faster strikes, heavier crits, life leech, elemental effects, or a completely different way to survive the next fight.

Factions in Ashikai are more than background names: ronin, citizens, yakuza, Shinsengumi, bandits, and other powers all have their own place in the world.
Matsuo Shinro’s actions can shape his reputation across the world, from who he helps and which quests he takes to who he attacks, protects, or betrays.
Favor one faction long enough and the balance can shift completely, turning old enemies into allies, former allies into threats, or Matsuo Shinro himself into a new kind of outlaw.

Fight your way, craft your adventure and become the ultimate warrior

Devlog #2 - 0.3.7 - Into the Fog
Hello, samurais! Most of our work for 0.3.7 focused on immersion, performance, and quality-of-life improvements. Dungeon maps no longer show everything from the start, the bow has three new skills, and busy rooms received a performance pass. We also improved coating feedback and combat presentation, while fixing problems that could get in the way during a run. The dungeon keeps its secrets The map reveals only what your character can see. Places you have already explored stay mapped, while spaces and enemies beyond walls remain hidden. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/46077239/29054a913085571e6293adc2f660def101889f32.png More reasons to keep the bow drawn Rapid Shooting keeps a fast sequence of arrows on one dangerous target. Arrow Shower marks an area and rains arrows into a group. Stepback Arrow combines a retreating dodge with a powerful shot when an enemy closes in. These skills join the normal and charged attacks from 0.3.6, adding choices after the opening arrow and giving bow users more room to stay at range. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/46077239/5ab39ce2962862d963ab64616be63b1f8dfc92a0.png Busy fights should feel busy for the right reasons Fights are clearer. Coated katana and bow hits now have stronger fire, wind, and thunder feedback. Critical finishes can leave more prominent wounds on dismemberable humanoid enemies. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/46077239/9efaead8fcc53dafbae56791fd9d181c430435c3.png Starting a run should also be less confusing. Difficulty selection is clearer, switching between controller and mouse and keyboard works better, and new prompts explain your starting actions. Other fixes address saves, retries, boss checkpoints, scene transitions, bow targeting, dungeon navigation, HUD layout, defeated enemies, and post-boss progression. Thank you, samurais Thank you for playing and sending feedback. Your feedback keeps helping us see what works and what gets in the way. When you play version 0.3.7, let us know how the new dungeon visibility, bow skills, combat feedback, and bu...Read full article on Community Announcements (SpaasZ)AnnouncementsOfficial

Devlog #1 - 0.3.6 - Ranged weapons and elemental damage
Devlog #1 - Humble beginnings! 0.3.6 — Ranged Weapons, Elemental Damage, and a More Dynamic Demo Hello, samurais! This is our first Devlog and we will keep pushing updates from now on to keep everyone updated! Since version 0.3.5, we’ve been working on expanding Ashikai’s combat system with more ways to approach every encounter. With version 0.3.6, ranged weapons, elemental damage and a new level 10 demo starting point will be released! Take the fight at a distanceBows have been added to the demo, giving you a new way to approach combat. Each bow has its own arrow capacity, determined by its stats. Arrows are replenished every 10 seconds, so managing your shots and choosing the right moment to attack is important.Bows also have two types of attacks:Normal attacks deal 1× damage.Charged attacks deal between 1.5× and 2.5× damage, depending on the charge. Skills will be introduced in the next update.Whether you want to weaken enemies before they reach you or create distance from dangerous targets, ranged weapons add another layer to combat.Weapon coatings change the battleWeapon coatings now allow you to deal elemental damage and apply different effects to enemies. Each coating encourages a different approach. WindWind adds stacks to enemies. Once the threshold is reached, a gust of wind erupts around the affected enemy and hits those nearby.Wind is especially useful for crowd control and turning groups of enemies against each other. FireFire applies burning damage over time, making it especially effective in focused one-on-one encounters.Use it to pressure a dangerous enemy while keeping your attention on the duel.ThunderThunder calls down a lightning strike that also damages enemies surrounding the target. It is a powerful choice when enemies are grouped together and you want your attack to reach beyond a single target. Elemental materials and craftingEach type of elemental damage has its own crafting materials and items used to apply weapon coatings. These resources c...Read full article on Community Announcements (SpaasZ)AnnouncementsOfficial
