About this game

Make music instead of managing software - do something creative instead of scrolling

DAWG - Digital Audio Workstation Game combines a music game with the creative depth of a DAW.

It is a music creation tool disguised as something you actually want to open. Sketch drums in seconds. Add basslines and melodies. Start with a simple pattern grid, then switch to a full piano roll whenever your idea needs more precision.

Shape sounds with live synthesis, real-time effects, mixing tools, MIDI input, sample recording, and WAV export - all powered by a custom real-time DSP engine made in Unity.

Dynamic tutorials help you learn by doing, whether you are making your first beat or already know your way around a piano roll.

DAWG is built for people who want to make music, not spend half the session setting up software.

Why DAWG feels different

Start simple. Go deep when you want.
Use Simple Mode to tap in patterns fast with a step locked grid that keeps ideas musical. Switch to DAW Mode for full piano roll editing with note length, velocity, drag editing, marquee select, quantize, and snap. Your work stays intact when you switch.

Make drums without the usual chore.
Build beats across 8 drum tracks with 5 built-in kits, then go further with custom kit recording. DAWG is designed to keep rhythm programming immediate, visual, and satisfying.

Play with real instruments, not placeholders.
DAWG offers DAW grade audio quality DSP engine and scheduling.

______________________________________________________________________________

Multiplayer - Support for 4-player local multiplayer. players sharing the same session and grid,

Story mode - Music creation journey, where the player grows from a beginner experimenting in a small room into someone exploring a bigger world of music, locations, characters, creative challenges and day-based progression - "zero to hero" style.

Summer update 7# - New Public Release Available!

Hi, everyone! I've just uploaded new public beta to the Itch.io. While the story content is still a placeholder, there was a major update to the DAW and visual part of the game. I noticed some shortcomings, but decided to push this version to Itch Instead of delaying it.There are loads of changes and improvements like:Effects upgrade - improved delay, reverb, Send & Return logic & performance effects.  Improved GUI - Wheel menus, Master Tab, FX Tab, Game Menus, ButtonsFine tuned animation, pop & easing effectPlay All scenes feature - hold play.Save & Load a session - you can now save the session for later! Some shortcomings I noticed: Play All feature is not working in MP.  FX: Bass FX knob can cause no sound on Bass; Phaser/Chorus are always on - fix will improve general audio quality; Some irregularities when app looses focus - restart should helpVocal Tab is not yet readyThe look of the interfaces and the menus are slowly coming together and are looking much better than in last release. If you have checked any version of DAWG before this - I highly encourage you to give it a try=)Take care and see you next update!

DAWG Public Beta is available on Itch - Free Public Beta test

Hello Everyone! After 10 months of development I've decide to release the latest public beta build for free on Itch.https://dawg-tools.itch.io/dawg-digital-audio-workstation-gameIt is now much closer to my original goal: a real music making system with a game built around it, rather than a game with some DSP bolted on.The audio engine is custom DSP written in C# and compiled with Unity Burst. It currently includes:- Subtractive, FM, and wavetable synthesis- Per instrument DSP chains- Live performance FX- Realtime parameter control and MIDI input- Custom live visualization following the signal through the complete DSP chain- Crossplatform multiplayer, sync of the clock, patterns and all DSP parameters in real timeIf interested - please give it a try and report back=)This public beta is mainly meant to test the DAW part of the game in public and in larger numbers. Some parts could still be rough and are work in progress (GUI, Pixel Art, Story mode/dialogues, Save/Load system, Sound Presets). All comments are welcomed and will be used for further improvement. I would be especially interested in hearing comments about Multiplayer and workflow. For now only local Wi-Fi connectivity, but will work with Steam services.

From Placeholders to Pixel Art -  Building DAWG’s Bedroom Studio

From Placeholders to Pixel Art -  Building DAWG’s Bedroom Studio I’ve got an exciting update, and this one is all about pixel art.I finally decided to tackle the delayed art pass... replacing the placeholder graphics and bringing the visual side of the game up to the same level as the rest of the project.Since I hadn’t worked with pixel art in a long time, getting the room’s perspective right took quite a bit of experimentation. Alongside the room itself, I also worked on furniture, music equipment, decorations, and other smaller details that help make the space feel like a real bedroom studio. The idea is that you begin with only the DAWG app and gradually unlock additional equipment as you progress through the story. These physical items will also unlock new DAW functionality, including:Additional drum lanes through the drum machineThe mixer through a rack mixerAudio visualization through an oscilloscopeNew synths, such as Bass, Groove, and ElectricAdditional effects through an FX unitI also want the room to be customizable. When you unlock a new piece of equipment, you will first need to find space for it by rearranging furniture and moving other objects around. The available space will be limited, much like it is for a real musician trying to build a studio in a bedroom. The room will serve as both the game’s main menu and the central location in Story Mode. I have also started adding animations to bring the scene to life and make it feel less static.Alongside the new artwork, I improved the main menu buttons and implemented a new Save/Load system. Players can now save and load complete sessions as well as individual synth presets. The main menu, buttons, and the artwork are still works in progress, but I’m excited to finally share this new direction with you. I hope you like it!

Multiplayer Reveal + Less Heath (for the CPU)

Hey everyone! For this update, we have quite a few interesting developments in DAWG. After the latest addition of shaders and visuals, I noticed decreased performance on mobile devices, so the goal was to restore the performance and improve it even further. The main part of this improvement involved continuing to remove the managed DSP code that existed before I implemented Unity Burst. Since the whole engine was essentially rewritten for Burst, there were still many parity calculations, duplicated processes, and basic inefficiencies that affected performance and caused overheating on mobile devices.I am happy to say that the optimization worked. The oldest targeted device, a Samsung S8 from 2017 is now running very smoothly and is no longer overheating. For more modern devices, this still means less heat build-up over time and better battery life, so I think the work was worthwhile. There is still some managed DSP code left, so the task is not complete. However, with the issues pinpointed, it should not take too much time to remove it completely. The second task was general multiplayer hardening, aligning it with Steam standards, and testing it on actual devices.Multiplayer is intended as a mode where players can connect to the same session. One player can control the drums, another can play an instrument, another can manage the FX, and another can mix the jam together. This could be a couch session or something outdoors in a park or at the beach. The main result I wanted was reliable clock sync, either locally over Wi-Fi or through Steam services. MIDI clock synchronization should be automatic, invisible to the user, and simply work, with self-healing over time. Patterns, notes, instruments, and master-panel settings should also synchronize in real time without introducing any additional latency. After spending time ironing out the bugs and conducting extensive testing, I managed to record a short three-way session so you can see how multiplayer responds in real time. ...

Quick update - visual and audio quality update + VIDEO!

Hey! I have a short but important update. The visuals and audio quality have been upgraded and optimised, so I had a chance to test the DAWG in real time and I managed to record a quick testing session. Goal with visualisation was to get the premium analog looking screen and waveforms that respond to audio changes in real time so user has better idea of active sound modulation. The visualisation optimisation took quite some time and effort to get it to the same level as the audio engine. At the worst stage the visualisation was burning 3x more frames than the DSP :DIn the second video, you can check how techno 4/4 beat can be constructed and shaped into a track. What visualization options would you like to see? Enjoy the hot summer!
