About this game

The forest, your home, is in danger. Wield the power of plants, unmask the evil forces corrupting nature, and banish them away to protect your friends.

THORNSPELL is a deckbuilding AND gardenbuilding roguelike where you will strategize to create the most powerful garden, while your foes will attempt to burn it to the ground.

Find unexpected combinations, experiment with different strategies, and snowball the growth of your garden to score big numbers and succeed in your quest.

Place plants from your deck in strategic formations, and trigger them to unleash their effects at the right place and time. Some effects only trigger when your plants are watered, others when harvested, or even when destroyed!

Manage both your deck of plants, and your deck of actions simultaneously, finding the best combinations, or the most ludicrous and unexpected synergies. Decide carefully!

Placement matters for your relics too! Explore different positions within your garden, and ensure they are overlapping the critical pieces of your strategy.

Test your strategies against a wide array of foes. If your magical garden is powerful enough to protect the forest, you will claim victory ...but if it is not, you will have to start over!

Demo Update (v0.1.0.3) - Reworked enemies + bugfixes

TL;DR - Fixed some bugs, new card to reposition plants, new status effects, Static Charge has been reworked, and we adjusted some enemies and reworked Tyrannic Grasp. Also, all the stages require a harder score to beat now.Hello everyone! This week we keep updating the demo with balance changes, polish and bug fixes. We also have reworked Tyrannic Grasp.ContentThere are not many ways to reposition in the game, and the Soilshifter is an annoying little bug, so we are adjusting its moveset so playing against it is more fun, as well as adding a new reposition card to the pool. We will be adding more ways to reposition your plants soon.New Action Card: Excavate. Cost 0. Rare.Reposition a plant to another plot.Draw 1 action card.Exhaust.ChangesReworked some descriptions to indicate if the effect would be based on the base essence of the plant, or on the current essence of the plant.Cut and Apple Branch are affected by this, as well as some tooltips.Quality of LifeCrystallized Energy now has an additional tooltip with the current strength of the effect.Bug fixesDodder now has the reposition tooltip as it should.Fixed a bug that made exhausted cards not trigger "on card used" effects.Fixed a bug that made games start with a wrong amount of cards in hand when forfeiting a game and retrying.Fixed a bug that didn't reset the high score tracker between runs.Fixed a visual bug that made enemy attack icons show up where they shouldn't.BalanceNew Status Effects: Weak and Evil Eye.Weak is a status effect that will weaken your plants (surprise!).We are introducing it to have a temporary debuff on your garden that doesn't impact your power after the encounter, and as part of the Static Charge rework. This means your plants won't be destroyed as often, and will grow in strength much more rapidly, so we are also increasing how quickly Corruption increases throughout stages to compensate.Improving (%) plants that are weakened do not take into account the weakened status, but effects lik...

Demo Release & Post Release Update! (v0.1.0.2)

TL;DR - Demo is out, we received feedback and looked through it. Frog boss is getting nerfed substantially while we rework it, all other bosses also getting nerfed/adjusted, Unnatural Disaster and other hard encounters getting nerfed. ON the other hand, overall Corruption required per stage will ramp up.Hello everyone! The demo for THORNSPELL has been released, and we are really excited and hyped for all of the feedback received! As always, when releasing something into the wild, there's positive feedback as well as concerns and constructive feedback shared with us that we really appreciate. Most common feedback points have been:First run is too easy.Enemy bosses feel unfair a lot of the times, especially during the first run.Certain cards are very strong, certain plant/relic/card combos are busted.Certain game mechanics and effects are very punishing when encountered without the right tools to mitigate them.Runs get a little too long sometimes if your build gets locked down early. We playtest everything we design, but our perception is biased by how close we are to the game. Every piece of feedback sent (be it a video, Discord, the feedback form, etc) we review and dissect, as it helps us see where do we need to adjust or change what we've done. The theme for the feedback received on the past days has been very clear: the game feels easy and, at the same time, the enemies feel unfair. In this case, we believe unfairness comes from feeling you don't have the agency to use what you've built, and also, the enemies or effects still striking down your plants when a turn ends, even if you where going to win. We are making some early changes, that are part of a bigger design plan, to make the game more fun to play right now, while we address the issue properly.Changes V.0.1.0.2Act LengthRemoved the 4th battle from each act. This means there's three less rewards total, as well as three less battles to get gold from, as well as tree less battles to grow the power of your garden. ...
