About this game

“You've always felt a strange power within you, haven't you?

In a forest long forgotten, lies hidden an ancient mystery that only you can uncover...

Come, adventurer, your destiny awaits!”

Haunted by strange dreams, a young adventurer finds a hidden tomb, setting in motion a chain of events centuries in the making... Guided by a restless spirit, he sets off for a faraway land, not knowing what fate awaits him.

Welcome to Nulphia, a vibrant island full of magic and mystery, home to the once-powerful Kingdom of Nulphia...

Non-linear exploration

Explore a gradually unfolding world rich with colorful landscapes, ancient ruins, curious puzzles, and hidden treasures.

The game features tight level design with inter-connected locations that open up as you unlock new abilities, shortcuts and tools to navigate the island.

Story-rich adventure

Delve into the history and forgotten secrets of a once-mighty kingdom, now merely a shadow of its former self, since a battle of wizards ravaged the land centuries ago.

As the ghosts of the past are re-surfacing after a long slumber, a dark threat looms over Nulphia once more...

Lively world

Meet and talk to the local inhabitants, learn about their lives, ask around for clues on your quest, and visit their shops to trade for useful items and unusual curiosities.

Responsive top-down action

Run, jump and swim using responsive movement controls with a top-down gameplay perspective.

Combine swordfighting, using tools like dynamite and stun bombs, casting elemental projectiles, and even summoning magical creatures to your aid, while using the environment to your advantage.

Use physics to your advantage

Every living thing has weight and inertia. Make use of the island’s terrain: launch enemies down cliffs, lure them into traps and push them into water. Be careful, because the same can happen to you too!

Find equipment and acquire abilities

Expand your traversal and combat abilities by acquiring new equipment and learning new magical abilities as you explore the island.

Towns, people, and dialogues in Nulphia

The townWelcome to Qual Harbor - a small port town on the island of Nulphia, and the first settlement in the game. There were several iterations of the town's layout and art style. I aimed to have a location that makes sense, looks nice, and is fun to explore. There are multiple enterable buildings, as well as hidden treasures tucked away for those who like to snoop around. The peopleThe game has many NPCs for the player to interact with. I needed a modular system that allows me to create many distinct humans quickly, so I spent some time making and animating humanoid bodies, as well as a set of different components that I can swap and customize (clothes, hairstyles, accessories, etc.).This was a lot of work, but now that the system is ready, I am able to add new interactive characters without feeling overwhelmed.People of Qual Harbor will talk to you and provide useful information. Some act as vendors and will sell things to you. As the story progresses, new dialogue options open up. The goal is to make each encounter interesting and at least somewhat useful.Early on I've decided to not have a map of the world available to the player. Exploration is heavily rewarded, and navigation requires players to pay attention to details, road signs, and ask people for directions. Some people are more knowledgeable than others, and will give particularly useful tips!Engine improvementsWith the addition of modular characters and a requirement for increased detail in town areas, I spent some time optimizing the game engine's renderer to make sure each zone loads quickly and performs well. There have also been significant upgrades to the engine's animation system, physics, and lighting.I've also implemented an attack impact system, which adds a visual effect and sound when a character attacks an immovable object (like a wall or a tree). It's a subtle change, but makes the game feel more responsive. That's it for now. The tools, improvements and decisions I made during this time will ...
