About this game

Congratulations, you have been elected to manage the distribution of resources within your region. Build an efficient and sustainable network of industries and railroads to satisfy the needs of the people.

Distributrains is a game for enjoyers of classic tycoon games who want a more goal-oriented, challenging and fast-paced experience. It is a game about building a beautiful little resource distribution network while balancing a growing number of concerns.

  • Resources must be carefully managed to satisfy the inputs and outputs of industrial processes, or your supply chains will grind to a halt.

  • Contracts and citizen demands exert constant pressure to perform your best, or risk getting voted out of office.

  • Every run is different, with randomised map generation, resource deposits, contracts, and cards.

  • For confident players there is Challenge Mode, a race to achieve a victory condition of your choice within 140 minutes.

  • Strive for brutally difficult achievements requiring mastery of different playstyles.

  • Invite friends to join your game in online cooperative multiplayer if you need additional arms.

Contracts and Cards

Contracts are essential to the gameplay loop, providing you with burdens, goods and reputation, as well as the path to victory, all within their specified time constraints. Juggle a growing number of contracts, or keep them to a minimum and strive for self sufficiency.

Beware: Breaching your contracts gives you stigma, potentially getting you kicked out of office.

Use your reputation to purchase cards, granting you extraordinary powers.

Railroads and Trains

Build railroad lines using simple tools that do not make your decisions for you.

Build power plants and electrify your rails to gain access to powerful electric engines, reinforce your rails to support high-speed trains, or both!

Every engine type has a use case, and different types can even be combined within a single train for basic synergies.

Build and rearrange trains with a simple drag-and-drop interface. Schedule train modifications with the Shunting feature.

Program your trains with an order system that is simple, yet flexible enough to optimize for time and resource management. Trains will often handle several resource types and can perform complex supply runs if needed.

Master the use of Signals to increase throughput and eliminate traffic jams. Trains will never crash or break down, however!

The Town

Grow the town by supplying building materials for additional reputation points, but do not forget it is your responsibility to serve the people.

It is able to generate a good amount of power (18MW peak), but in doing so it burns through Waste exceptionally quickly, so this is not sustainable. However, like the Steam Power Plant, it is able to adapt its output to match the current demand, and ...

    Resource Graphs

This update contains the following changes: Added Resource Graphs functionality Added nodebuggl command line flag to disable OpenGL error checking Fixed a bug where metal was not refunded for using the remove mode on tracks Fixed incorrect event text for one of the PR Campaign options Fixed regression where combustion engines would fail to use tanked fuel when the Train Core is empty The resource graphs window contains several infographics: Produced/Consumed/Used: {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/46033375/09c437e90c691e38a1197c0f72a97670be4a54a5.png These tabs show line charts with historical data about every resource. Produced - The sum of imports and production of industries Consumed - The sum of exports and consumption of industries and combustion engines Used - The sum used by player actions, e.g. building infrastructure and trains, minus metal refunds. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/46033375/1b01e7e4d0652a424357f9b66d6e3ed46fe0edc1.png Hovering the mouse over the legend isolates the line for single resource. Resource Allocation: These tabs show bar charts illustrating the allocation of a specific resource. For instance, in the Waste tab: {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/46033375/1508f4b7be454cea5de06e0e7eefcdc5c9e03d17.png These bars, from left to right, indicate that this cycle: A small amount of Waste has been consumed by Produce production (Farms) Some Waste has been produced by Food production A lot of Waste has been consumed by Fuel production A lot of Waste has been produced by Semiconductor production A small amount of Waste has been produced by the Town In sum, Waste production has been somewhat greater than Waste consumption {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/46033375/528341425b1ba283852b3cff0062395cea8ee4d8.png Hovering the mouse over a bar shows information about it.

New Achievements, Tidal Power, Export Targets

This update contains the following changes: Added Export Targets option to custom game menu (requires an increasing number of export contract completions per cycle) The Snow Town achievement has been replaced by the Ice King achievement Added Speedster achievement Added Tidal Power Plant Fixed broken text for train temperament selectors The Export Targets rule is intended to allow increasing the tension in custom games, especially when playing with "Allow actions while paused". In the future, I'm planning to add a few presets in a submenu under "Start Game", some of which will include this rule. The Snow Town achievement was replaced due to being too dependent on random numbers. The Ice King achievement requires the Train Core to be above the snow line instead of the Town Hall. This makes a somewhat similar type of challenge, but much more likely to encounter a map where it is possible. The Speedster achievement requires doing an unusual playstyle where only "fast" trains are used, requiring special considerations, especially to get access to them at the start of the game. In Distributrains, the sea has just been an obstacle, with no real uses. The Tidal Power Plant changes this by allowing power to be extracted from water connected to the map edge. It consumes metal to build tidal generators, which produce constant output independent of climate. However, these break down after a time (e.g. due to being in a highly corrosive environment), and cost metal to be rebuilt, so this power plant is suitable for metal-rich runs.
