You are among the last surviving crew of a decimated interplanetary civilization. To bring your people back from the brink of collapse, build modular stations out of the wreckage, manage a thriving crew of citizens, and manufacture vital resources. Make fuel and move your colonies across procedurally generated solar system in a massive N-body gravity simulator.

Built from scratch in Rust by a solo developer (that's me, Dave!), Stella Nova unravels as a living universe where you are the builder, the fighter, the politician. You will take helm of the reconstruction of a spacefaring civilization. The custom physics and rendering engine (WarpCore) is super lightweight, taking up less than 500mb on disk, and capable of rendering thousands of entities on screen without skipping a beat.

Stella Nova features:

  • Accurate Time Dilating Astrophysics Engine - Off-rails physics

    • Stella Nova features a living and breathing universe with thousands of dynamic objects visible and adhering to real n-body orbital physics. A unique aspect of the rendering engine built from scratch is that the player has control over the flow of time, dilating and compressing the flow of time at will.

  • Modular Station Construction (Crossword Puzzle Style)

    • Create stations which are little factories that you will develop to automatically manufacture resources, with the help of your citizens, that is :)

  • Colony Management

    • Assign citizens to attend to various tasks to support the wellbeing of your colony. You just give them an assignment, and they do the work!

  • Stories from the Cataclysm

    • Featuring 30 unique citizen stories written with the help of my girlfriend :)

  • Plan Real Hohmann Transfers between Planets

    • Work with real orbital mechanics and physics in order to fly interplanetary distances on crafts powered by your citizens. Manufacture fuel and expand your civilization across the solar system.

  • 6-Tier Crafting Chain ::: 52 resources, 41 recipes

    • Build automated factories for developing more advanced processed resources!
      solar system.

  • Localized in 17 Languages (German, French, Hindi, and Klingon among them)

Stella Nova - UI & Accessibility Patch! v0.2.1

Good afternoon from Mountain View everyone :) I've been working to listen to community feedback as closely as possible as I'm developing Stella Nova. As we're heading into Steam Next Fest this week, one of our Discord members was kind enough to test and report on UI Scaling problems they were facing on their 1080p hardware. It's important to me as a developer that Stella Nova is as accessible as possible, across languages, hardware, and visual perception capabilities. I really think that you shouldn't be locked out of gameplay for these kind of simple reasons. The community has done an amazing job to support this goal so far. I am strongly committed as a developer to that stance, so the final bug fixing patch before Next Fest for Stella Nova primarily focuses on making the UI scaling visually accessible across hardware. In addition, it also focuses to ensure that save persistence of these settings is respected from session to session. You can now scale the User Interface within Stella Nova just like you do with a browser: Simply hold Ctrl & (+/-) together to scale the user interface. It's also still available in the esc menu, with a lot of different new preset scaling options. 50% Scaling100% Scaling 200% Scaling thanks so much for all your help, Discord :) There's a bunch of other bugfixes and stuff too. Here goes! Major FixesUI Scaling & Accessibility Features (Complete)New input scheme : Simply hold Ctrl & (+/-) together to scale the user interface. Journal no longer overlaps close button on colony management panel.Characters now scale in size along the bottom row to accommodate shrinking/growing timescale slider.Timescale slider no longer overlapped by colony management by default. Ship List no longer obscured from view by default. Journal Panel now extends to show entire panel, general visual redesign. Using the scroll wheel in the crew panel now scrolls horizontally. This however did not leave the ability to scroll vertically, but a new vertical scroll bar has...

    Stella Nova - Major Patch 2! v0.2.0

Good afternoon from Mountain View, California :) Today I'm really excited to be releasing the second major bug patch and feature update for Stella Nova. Atop listening to community feedback to drive the development of the project for major quality-of-life fixes, I managed to add in some cool features. Here are the patch notes for v0.2.0! Major FixesLinux Support Workaround@TPlays in our Discord Server was kind enough to test out the most recent build through Proton on SteamOS. Initially, there was a bug which caused the game to be openable on Linux, but default to a black screen on load. We found that if you go to your library, and right click Stella Nova Demo->Properties->Launch Options, paste this code:WGPU_BACKEND=vulkan %command% 2>&1 | tee ./stellalog.txtand relaunch the game. It should be runnable through Proton. I've included a new update to the engine which will enable this by default and should make it compatible with most Linux distros. I would love further community feedback on getting this perfectly right."Request New Visitors" Crash FixThere was a considerable bug with a fallback option for one of the tutorial objectives. If you run out of time for a visitor during the tutorial section, eventually the visitor will depart. When this happens, an option will come up in the journal which gives you a button to "Request New Visitors" as a fallback. In the last build, clicking this button would instantly crash the program, hard lock. I diagnosed it over a couple days, turns out this was due to a softlock on a mutex variable controlling the creation and distribution of new players. It should now be resolved :)Building Thruster not triggering tutorialBuilding the thruster block now correctly triggers the tutorial section on building.Crew Panel Scroll FixThe community has asked, over and over again, so here it finally is. You can now use the scroll wheel to move through your list of citizens in the Colony Management panel! Audio RebalanceI've reduced the overall ...

Stella Nova - Minor Patch v0.1.2

hey everyone! some playtesters got back to me with some awesome feedback, and I've made a couple of updates to the game. i'm really trying to listen to the community as much as possible for feedback and suggestions, so if you have good ones please let me know on our Discord! https://discord.com/invite/SkJDmnRmdJ Tutorial and User interfaceModule Rotation Hints added in a simple z/c hint on the cursor while placing directional modules to indicate directionalityTitanium Clarity Something I noticed playtesters consistently hitting was an inability to collect titanium ore from the asteroid field. i've created an update to the tutorial system which introduces players to the Searching behavior at the same time that they are introduced to the component lab for clarity. I've also added a greater spawn rate of titanium ore to work with.Construction and StationOn Station Storage Repaired a bug which would fail to eject resources into space in some cases.Resource Selection PrecisionResources near the station footprint were not able to be clicked because the station footprint itself took precedence. it no longer does this. ControlsScroll zoom directioneveryone has been asking for the scroll zoom to be inverted by default. so now it is! enjoy :)All this, as well as miscalleneous backend code cleanup and minor refactoring to keep the gravitational engine running smoothly. see you in the next one! dave :)

Stella Nova - Major Patch 1!

It's been two weeks since the first demo released, and the first software patch for Stella Nova is live on Steam now!

https://store.steampowered.com/app/4474070/Stella_Nova/

I've added a wide variety of quality-of-life updates, as well as critical fixes to the GUI of the Save/Load system. I've tried to take as much community feedback as possible into account for as smooth of a player experience as possible. If you have further suggestions, definitely ping here I will 100% be reading! Here's the full patch notes for the May 28th build of the Stella Nova Demo! Major Fixes Save PersistenceUI Scaling, settings, and other graphics options now save automagically on exit.Save and Exit UIAlongside the issues that existed mentioned above, i decided to take the opportunity to clean up the UI a little bit.custom mouse cursorI was finding the mouse a bit difficult to find against the asteroid field in some cases. I resolved this by adding a new custom mouse cursor, as well as a lot of customization options to allow you to choose whatever cursor you'd like.internationalization UIThe new internationalization UI also includes a translation terminal. I can't be more grateful for the help the community has given in translating much of the UI so far, but now there's an integrated terminal to send me an email for a translation suggestion directly within the game! If you'd like to contribute, it would be extremely helpful.Live Activity MenuI added a new panel to the colony management tab! there's now a live view of what all colonists are doing at any given time. It provides a live log of pretty much the entirety of the colony's activity & any notable events. Tutorial and User Interface Redesign of Tutorial and General UpdatesI've been watching very closely and reading your feedback to the letter to provide as seamless a tutorial experience as possible. I've added some more information about how to search, how your character works, and miscellaneous bugfixes to make sure things trig...
