About this game

Stick Scholars is a chaotic online party game where players must parkour to school, answer trivia, and sus out a hidden saboteur (the Class Clown). The Class Clown attempts to prevent the group from graduating by intentionally missing trivia questions, pretending to be bad at parkour, or making the parkour more challenging by using items. The Class Clown can’t be too obvious though, or they risk the group voting to suspend them.

1. ROLE ASSIGNMENT

Scholars want to graduate. The Class Clown wants to prevent that by any means necessary.

2. PARKOUR

Before every quiz, students must survive a goofy and chaotic 2D parkour run to school. Fail to make it to class on time (or die along the way), and that player automatically fails their portion of the trivia quiz, making it harder for the group to achieve a passing grade. There are ridiculous obstacles on the way to school, such as fiery trash cans and big locks blocking the way. Don't choke on the jumps or people might think you're the Class Clown!

Watch out for items the Class Clown actively places! (Example: Fake Block shown below.)

3. TRIVIA

Each player that makes it to school must answer a trivia question that is specific to them. To pass the trivia quiz, the group must collectively score high enough to get a passing grade. Class Clowns may intentionally answer incorrectly, or blend in with the Scholars early on in the game by answering questions correctly.

Do you know your friends' knowledge well enough to sus out the Class Clown?

4. VOTE

After the results of each trivia quiz, everyone votes on who they think is the Class Clown. The player with the most votes is temporarily suspended for the next trivia quiz only. Suspended players have no impact on the following quiz score as they do not participate in answering a trivia question.

SCORING & END GAME

If the Scholars pass more than the required number of quizzes, they graduate! If not, the Class Clown wins. By default, the group needs to pass at least 6 out of 10 trivia quizzes to graduate.

CUSTOM GAME SETTINGS

To accommodate a large variety of knowledge and skill levels, there are many settings the host can adjust to tailor the parkour & trivia difficulty to your group's needs. I recommend starting with the default trivia settings for the most balanced gameplay though.

HELPFUL TIPS

Here’s a few additional aspects of Stick Scholars worth knowing:

  • Extra Credit: If the group scores 100% on a quiz, the group receives 10% extra credit for the following quiz. That means the group only needs 50% on the following quiz to achieve a passing grade of 60% (50% + 10%).

  • Class Clown Items: Even a suspended Class Clown can use their fake blocks and smoke grenades to sabotage. The Class Clown gets 1 Smoke Grenade and 1 Fake Block per quiz. Unused items stack up to 3 items of each. To quickly pick up your items as the Class Clown during the parkour, you can use the default keyboard keys Q and E. This allows you to quickly place your items while still moving around, so as not to draw suspicion on yourself.

  • Variable Jump Height: The jump height of your character varies based on how long you press the jump key. Tapping the jump key will do the shortest jump. Pressing and holding the jump key will do the highest jump.

  • Tungsten Cubes: Heavy Tungsten cubes can be moved by pushing them.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Good Internet Connection.

  • People to play with. There are no public lobbies. Note: There is a single-player practice mode if you just want to do parkour and trivia by yourself and achieve grades/achievements. However, this will not have the social deduction aspect of the game. Likewise, in CO-OP MODE (2 player lobby), you work with one friend to graduate together without any Class Clown interference.

However, the full game has over 2,000 manually vetted trivia questions and 100+ Parkour levels, which should provide many hours or fun for you and your friends! Below is a list of other changes since the demo.LIST OF CHANGES SINCE DEMO:Added parkour tutorial (in practice mode)Added anonymous voting optionReduced slippery-ness significantly (w/ option to make it more slippery if you prefer the challenge)Reduced wind strengthPer-host question tracking to avoid repeats. Have the same player host and you won’t run into repeat questions until you exhaust the entire 2,000+ questions. If you do, there is an option in trivia settings to use 20,000 open-source trivia questions that have not been vetted.Categorized parkour levels into Static & Dynamic (for those with weak internet connections, they can turn off dynamic levels for better experience)Added dress outfitAlternative song option during parkour (see audio settings)Parkour only practice modeAdded more grade levels to practice mode (3-12)Steam AchievementsSimplified Role Assignment (makes your role more clear)Various Bug Fixes (Lobbies getting hard-stuck at various phases under poor network conditions, issues with players leaving mid-game, etc.)Thanks so much to everyone who gave feedback during playtesting and the demo. Small Demo Update - v1.1

Hey everyone! Thanks so much to everyone tried out the demo and those who have reported an issue/bug, it’s really helpful!Below is a list of updates I made in the latest version of the demo based on everyone’s feedback. If you submitted any additional feedback that I did not fix, I’m probably still working on it. If you encounter a bug from one of the below issues that should now be fixed, please report it again so I know it is still an issue. Thanks so much!Minor Game ChangesMade character less floatyAdjusted a couple parkour levelsIncreased smoke grenade durationDecreased default parkour time to get to classStreamer-mode setting now syncs across clients based on the Host’s settingBanned additional namesBug FixesEnabling Class Clown items late in the round carried those items beyond the parkourWhen the last surviving player disconnected during parkour, round did not end until the timer ran outPlayers unable to continue after the quizFake Block was preventing Tungsten movementPlayers could get stuck in a corner between Tungsten and a wallFPS was dropping throughout the game when custom trivia upload was largeTungsten was not crushing clients, only the host.Player overlap prevented the correct player(s) from being ignited by laserSingleplayer grade selector highlight color issueCustom trivia upload button spelling issueAnswers to Commonly Submitted Questions:Q: Can you add more trivia?A: The full game will have lots more trivia! The demo is just a trial of the game so you can test it out to see if you like it. Q: When will there be online lobbies? A: Unfortunately, I have no plans to add public lobbies anytime soon. The moderation is a bit overwhelming to me and I’d need to learn more about the technical aspects of doing public lobbies (especially to prevent cheating). I think an important aspect of the game is knowing your friend’s trivia knowledge and parkour ability, so I think the game is much better when played with people you know. Sorry if that’s disappointing...

Playtesting for Stick Scholars is now available!

What I'm looking for:General Feedback on how fun the game is (Multiplayer specifically)Any bugs, crashes or connection issuesAnything confusing or frustratingYour Most/Least Favorite PartsAny additional feedback that could help improve the gameYou can provide this feedback with the in-game survey, and you can also report bugs/issues in-game. Feel free to also provide feedback in the Steam Community discussions for the game if that's what you prefer. ADDITIONAL NOTES:The full game will have much more trivia and many more levels. In addition to general feedback, I'm also planning to use data from the playtest to help balance the difficulty of the game. Currently, I believe the game is probably a bit too hard (particularly for the Scholars), but I'll be curious to see the data. The game is primarily multiplayer, but there is a Singleplayer mode for practicing. Feedback on the multiplayer is more critical to me and the Singleplayer still needs a bit of work.Playtesting will be available for the next 1-2 weeks. Thanks so much!
