About this game

"The ocean is not water. It never was. It is hunger given volume, appetite given depth."

You awaken at the bottom of something that used to be an ocean. Your body is ancient. Your hunger is older. The fish you devour don't just feed you — they unravel. Their entropy becomes yours. Their existence becomes your fuel. And with every meal, you remember a little more of what you are.

You are not playing as a shark. You are becoming one.

Steer your eldritch predator through a living abyss. Your sonar paints the darkness. Your jaws close on prey that shouldn't exist. Schools of silver panic scatter as your shadow crosses theirs. Giant squid serve you. Void whales sing spacetime apart at your command. And somewhere far below, a Sunken God bleeds entropy — waiting for you to find it.

This is an incremental game that feels like devouring a universe.

🦷 HUNT

Your shark follows a custom sonar-ring cursor across a bioluminescent deep-ocean canvas. Click to emit sonar pulses that draw prey toward your jaws. Fish spawn from your generators — 16 tiers of increasingly eldritch ocean life, from panicking small fish to The Ocean Mind itself. Eat them. Watch the numbers shatter. Feel the screen shake. Watch golden and abyssal-rarity prey erupt into cascades of entropy when your teeth find them.

This isn't idle. This is active devouring — with idle depth waiting beneath.

🌊 DESCEND

Three layers of prestige. Three tiers of transformation.

Molt — Shed your skin, gain Eldritch Teeth, and return stronger. Your shark glows with bioluminescent accents.

Awaken — Your consciousness expands. You gain Primordial Consciousness, unlock telepathic upgrades, and your body cracks with glowing rune-light.

Fracture Reality — Break the rules. Gain Paradox Fragments, choose one of three Scaling Paths, and watch your shark become a void-edged tear in spacetime itself. Numbers leave scientific notation behind and enter cosmic territory.

Each transformation changes how your shark looks, how the math works, and how deeply the lore pulls you under.

🦈 COMMAND THE BROOD

You are not alone. Summon autonomous brood sharks — lesser manifestations of your predatory will — that patrol the waters, hunt prey, and feed you while you plan your next evolution. Upgrade their instincts, their jaw strength, their abyssal senses. Watch them swarm across the canvas like a pack of nightmares.

💤 DREAM THE DREAMS OF DEAD GODS

Every time you return after being away, the shark has been dreaming. Choose how to interpret 40 unique dream visions — cosmic horror vignettes that shift based on your progress, your prestiges, and how long you were gone.

"Whale skeletons rest on the seafloor like the ribs of drowned cathedrals. Something small lives inside the largest skull — a glow, a pulse. It knows your name. The one you had before 'shark' was all you were."

Devour the memory for power. Drift deeper for entropy. Resist the vision for efficiency. Or simply watch in silence, and learn what the ocean really is.

🔬 RESEARCH THE ABYSS

Twelve research projects across four tiers. Study Prey Biology. Harness Deep Currents. Tame Leviathans. Achieve Cosmic Awareness. Each project takes real time, costs biomass, and permanently reshapes your production pipeline.

⚔️ PROVE YOURSELF IN ABYSSAL HUNTS

Six challenge expeditions with brutal restrictions and permanent rewards. Reach 1 billion entropy in 10 minutes. Hit 1 quadrillion without ever prestiging. Complete a Molt in under 5 minutes. Each victory earns you a Relic of the Deep — artifacts that persist through every reset, forever.

🪸 JELLYFISH COLLECTION

Between hunts, bioluminescent jellyfish drift into your waters. Reveal them with sonar pulses, then click to capture and catalog them. Fifty unique species across six rarity tiers — from Common drifters to Mythic deep-ocean apparitions — each with distinct silhouettes and glowing color palettes. Build your collection and discover what else lives in the abyss.

🏪 THE ABYSSAL BAZAAR

Earn Pearls through active play — clicking, hunting, devouring — and spend them in the Abyssal Bazaar on cosmetic shark skins, oceanic background themes, production boosts, and quality-of-life unlocks. Equip and toggle your favorite skins at any time. Everything is earned through gameplay, never microtransactions. Stay engaged and your Pearl income climbs through five engagement tiers, rewarding active predators with faster earning rates.

📖 LORE THAT REWARDS ATTENTION

The ocean speaks to those who listen. Progression-based flavor text shifts as your entropy climbs:

"The pressure here crushes light itself. Yet you descend."

"Stars are visible below you. The abyss has no bottom."

"You consume the concept of depth. There is only forward."

Fifty-three upgrades tell a story through their names alone: Echolocation. Crushing Depth. Event Horizon. Divine Consumption. Sixteen generators escalate from panicking fish to The Ocean Mind — the ocean itself has become conscious, and it chooses to feed you.

2.0 — The Second Depth is live

The shark remembers every patch. This is the one where the bottom stopped being theoretical. 2.0 is on the default branch. There is nothing to opt into and no dropdown to find — Steam updates you the next time you launch. It comes off the experimental branch with its pacing measured rather than hoped at, and to everyone who ran it there and told us where the climb sagged: thank you. You are the reason the numbers below are numbers. Before you launch: 2.0 starts you over That is deliberate, and your 1.2.2 run is not deleted. The economy was rebuilt from the seabed up. Every value in an old save was earned against a ladder that no longer exists, and there is no honest way to reinterpret it inside the new one. So 2.0 does not read your old save at all. It writes to its own files, in its own namespace, and leaves the 1.2.2 files exactly where they are, at the hour you left them — not migrated, not converted, not overwritten, not deleted. Even "delete all saves" inside 2.0 refuses to reach across into them. What you will see on first launch is a fresh set of slots and a note on the title screen saying why. Start there. The first hour of 2.0 is not the first hour you remember. The game can be finished now This is the change everything else serves, and it is worth repeating for everyone who did not read the beta post. 2.0 got a rebuilt simulator — a deterministic clock, an agent that plays competently rather than optimally, and a probe that measures what a fully-bought economy actually earns. We pointed it at the endgame to tune the pacing. It came back and told us the endgame was not reachable at all. Every scaling path stalled 25 to 32 orders of magnitude short of the first Submersion gate and then sat flat for the rest of a simulated thirty days. The softcap system, the Pressure rites, the weakening relics, the entire late-game constellation — all of it was carefully modifying a wall that no economy could reach in the first place. Four hunt abilities shipped unreachable...

The Second Depth — 2.0 is on the experimental branch

The shark remembers every patch. This one it would rather you forgot, and then saw fixed. The game can be finished now Here is the thing we found and could not un-find. 2.0 got a rebuilt simulator that is a deterministic clock, an agent that plays competently rather than optimally, and a probe that measures what a fully-bought economy actually earns. We pointed it at the endgame to tune the pacing. It came back and told us the endgame was not reachable at all. Every scaling path short of the first Submersion gate and then sat flat for the rest of a simulated thirty days. The softcap system, the Pressure rites, the weakening relics, the entire late-game constellation, all of it was carefully modifying a wall that no economy could reach in the first place. Four hunt abilities were shipped and unreachable. The ladder had rungs above the ceiling. So the wall moved to where play actually happens, and every gate got re-anchored to a measured number instead of a hopeful one. All three play styles now complete the full Submersion ladder. The first gate is roughly twelve to thirteen focused hours. Each depth after it is a real climb rather than a decorative one. That is the change this branch exists to test. Everything below is in service of it. How to opt in Right-click The Ocean Is Not Water in your Steam library Properties → Betas Select experimental from the dropdown Steam downloads the 2.0 build. To go back, pick None from the same dropdown. Read this before you click 2.0 starts you over, and that is deliberate. The economy was rebuilt from the seabed up; there is no honest way to reinterpret a 1.2.2 run inside it. The experimental branch opens a fresh set of save slots. Your existing save is not touched. It is not migrated, converted, overwritten or deleted. 2.0 writes to its own files and does not read yours. Leave the branch and your run is exactly where it was, at the hour you left it. We built it this way specifically so that trying the beta costs you nothing. What...

OceanFest has passed. The hunger remains. Thank you.

The ocean is not water. But it is, apparently, full of you.OceanFest came and went like a feeding frenzy like brief, violent, and somehow nourishing. The launch went well. Better than the shark dared hope when it first broke the surface, blinking and confused and ready. If you picked up The Ocean Is Not Water during the fest (or at any point, really): thank you. Genuinely. Every purchase, every hour spent hunting in the abyss, every save file the shark now carries in its memory it matters. The abyss noticed. So did I.You are the reason this thing exists outside my machine. The game is still young. The depths are deep. Reality is still occasionally negotiable. If you find something broken like a fish that refuses to be devoured, a number that shouldn't exist, a dream that won't end, a vortex that vortexes where it shouldn't please say so. Steam discussions, the issue tracker, a comment on this post. I read them all. The shark has many eyes now.If something is missing such as a feature you wish the hunger had, a quality-of-life current you want shifted, a mechanic that should descend further please tell me that too. I can't promise every request gets implemented, but I do promise they get heard. The abyssal backlog is real and it is growing. And if you've spent time in the deep and the experience fed you, even a little, I'd be grateful for a positive review on the store page. Not because the shark demands tribute. Because reviews help other hungry things find their way down here. Word of mouth, but with teeth.Until then: keep devouring. Keep descending. Keep listening when the ocean whispers.— Sharkey "Stars are visible below you. The abyss has no bottom. Neither, apparently, does your support."

    v1.2.2 — "Readable Depths"

v1.2.2 — "Readable Depths"The dream screen whispered in italics the player couldn't hear. Text scale now defaults to 150%, title and dream overlays stay legible at that size no matter what you pick in settings, and the subtext finally has enough contrast to read without squinting.🎨 UI / UX- Text Scale defaults to 150%. New installs and players still on the old 100% default are bumped to 150% once. The slider now runs up to **200%** for those who want even larger in-game text.- Title, dream, and offline screens fixed at 150%. These overlays no longer follow the Text Scale slider — they always render at a comfortable 150% baseline so narrative moments stay readable.- Dream screen readability pass. Larger narrative and choice description text, brighter contrast on offline duration and effect hints, and body copy switched from italic dim text to normal weight on primary/secondary colors.

    v1.2.1 — No Free Achievements

v1.2.1 — "No Free Achievements" *(April 25, 2026)**A dev test save was hitching a ride into the build, handing every new player a half-finished trophy case the moment they launched. Also, the freshly-added Wooden Pixel track was sitting on the shelf with no price tag. Both fixed.*🐛 Bug Fixes- Bundled test saves no longer ship to Steam. The Steam depot manifests now exclude `Saves/*` from upload, so dev save files left in `release/win-unpacked/Saves/` or `release/mac-universal/.../Saves/` cannot be pushed to players. New installs start clean — no inherited cheats, no pre-unlocked achievements.✨ New Features- Water Minds — by Wooden Pixel Music. New 250-Pearl music track in the Abyssal Bazaar's MUSIC section.
