NGC-404

A living 2D space strategy/RPG game about survival, trade, war, and building power in a sector.

The sector has been cut off from its home world.

Trade routes have collapsed. Colonies are running out of supplies. Factions compete for fuel, food, weapons, territory, and influence. In the middle of this crisis, you command a small fleet and try to turn it into something that can survive.

In NGC-404, you lead a faction in a simulated galaxy where economy, logistics, exploration, and combat are connected. Build colonies, fit ships, manage captains, trade resources, raid enemies, defend supply lines and fight real-time 2D battles where positioning and preparation matter as much as firepower.

Start small. Build influence. Shape the sector.

You begin with limited ships, limited resources and a dangerous sector around you. Every system can become an opportunity, a threat or a battlefield.

  • Command a small amount of ships directly

  • Explore star systems and unknown signals

  • Survey planets and decide where to expand

  • Build and develop colonies

  • Trade, raid, defend or conquer depending on your strategy

A living sector economy

The galaxy is not just a background map. Planets produce resources, colonies consume goods, shortages create pressure and trade routes determine which worlds survive and which begin to collapse.

  • Planets produce and consume resources over time

  • Supply and demand dynamically affect prices

  • Shortages can destabilize local and global markets

  • Surpluses can crash prices and create new opportunities

A powerful fleet is useless if it cannot be supplied. Fuel, supplies, production and trade access all matter when planning your next move.

Fit ships for your strategy

Your ships are not just health bars with guns. Their equipment, weapon groups, captains, hull quality and logistical limits affect how they perform in battle and how far they can operate from friendly territory.

  • Install weapons, systems, and ship components

  • Configure weapon groups and firing behavior

  • Hire characters and assign them as ship captains

  • Upgrade ships with better components and hull quality

  • Prepare different loadouts for different roles

Tactical 2D space battles

Combat in NGC-404 is real-time and logistics-driven. Ships use energy weapons, kinetic cannons, missiles, and point-defense systems. Positioning, firing arcs, range, fuel, supply and weapon control all affect the outcome of a fight.

  • Fight real-time 2D space battles

  • Use kinetic cannons, energy weapons, missiles, and point-defense

  • Intercept incoming projectiles with dedicated defensive weapons

  • Manage power, weapon groups, and firing control

  • Plan around fuel, supplies, damage, and recovery time

Battles are not isolated events. A victory can leave your fleet damaged, low on supplies, or unable to continue without support.

Explore the uncharted sector

The sector is only partially charted. Beyond established space, you can discover new systems, resource-rich planets, abandoned infrastructure, hidden signals and rare artifacts that can shift the balance of power.

  • Explore procedurally generated star systems

  • Survey planets for colonization potential

  • Discover derelict stations and abandoned infrastructure

  • Investigate hidden signals and unknown contacts

  • Recover artifacts that provide strategic advantages

Sensors, detection, and hidden threats

You do not always know what is out there. NGC-404 uses a dynamic sensor and detection system that determines what your ships can see, what remains unidentified and when hostile forces are finally revealed.

  • Detection ranges depend on ship capabilities

  • Unknown contacts can appear before they are identified

  • Hostile forces may remain hidden outside sensor coverage

  • Scouting and positioning can decide whether you control the engagement

Procedural sectors with shareable seeds

NGC-404 uses procedural generation with customizable seeds, allowing you to create a unique sector layout every time or share a specific sector with other players.

  • Randomized star systems and planetary distribution

  • Dynamic faction starting positions

  • Variable resource density and economic balance

  • Different exploration opportunities in every campaign

Solo or multiplayer sector campaigns

Play alone or shape the sector together. NGC-404 supports multiplayer, allowing players to control separate factions within the same simulated galaxy.

  • Control separate factions in one sector

  • Compete economically or form alliances

  • Wage wars over colonies, systems, and trade routes

  • Join ongoing campaigns with hot join support

Whether you cooperate or compete, the sector continues to evolve around the choices made by you and other players.

Core features

    NGC-404 The Great Economy Rework

Hello Sector Commanders,For the past four weeks, we have been rebuilding the entire economy of NGC-404: Fractured Sector. This has been one of the largest systemic changes we have worked on so far. The goal was simple: make the economy feel like something that actually exists inside the game world, not just a set of numbers moving in the background.Previously, trade was mostly abstract. Resources moved between planets through systems and calculations, but the player did not always feel that movement happening in the galaxy. That has changed.Resources now physically exist on planetary markets and must be transported by real ships. Every shipment can be delayed, intercepted, raided, or completely destroyed. Video Devlog:Physical TradePlanets now generate real shortages and surpluses. When one colony needs food, fuel, industrial components, or other resources, the economy can create a trade contract. A freighter must then travel to the source planet, load the cargo, and physically deliver it to the destination. There is no global resource pool. There is no instant transfer between colonies. If the freighter never arrives, neither do the resources. This makes logistics far more important. A colony can have money and demand, but if no ship can safely deliver the goods, the shortage remains.Fixing the Flow of MoneyPhysical trade also exposed a major problem with money.Construction, maintenance, fees, and other expenses were removing cash from the economy entirely. Over time, this could drain money from the galaxy and concentrate what remained inside only a few empires. To fix this, we introduced GalaxyBank and a unified payment system.Money spent on fees and other economic sinks is now collected by the Bank instead of simply disappearing. The Bank can then return part of that money back into the economy through loans and activity-based payments.Money now circulates through the galaxy instead of being permanently deleted. This gives the economy a much stronger foundation for long-t...

NGC-404 Ship Redesigns and Combat Feel Improvements

Hello Sector Commanders,This update is focused on something very important to us: making the game easier to read, better to look at, and more satisfying to play.Over the last few weeks, we received a lot of useful community feedback about our ships and combat presentation. We took that feedback seriously and went back to improve several visual parts of NGC-404: Fractured Sector.Reworked Ship DesignsWe have reworked our 2D ship models based on the comments and suggestions we received from the community. The goal was not to change the identity of the ships, but to make them cleaner, stronger, and easier to understand at a glance. The main improvements include:Clearer ship silhouettesBetter readability between ship classesLess repeated and copy-paste looking surface detailMore recognizable large visual featuresToned down lighting and shader intensityCleaner overall faction styleThese changes should make each ship feel more distinct, especially when viewed during combat or at smaller zoom levels.Final Designs for This Ship LineThis pass covers the final designs for this ship line, including:FrigatesDestroyersLight CruisersHeavy CruisersBattleshipsEach class now has a stronger visual role. Smaller ships are easier to identify, while larger ships should feel heavier and more imposing on the battlefield.Combat Presentation ReworkWe also reworked several parts of the combat presentation and overall battle feel. The main focus was to make battles feel less like icons shooting at each other and more like actual ships trading fire, taking damage, and breaking apart.Combat improvements include:Clearer weapon fireMore readable impactsImproved combat pacingBetter ship movementStronger destruction feedbackCleaner overall battle flowOur goal is to make large battles easier to follow without losing the chaos and intensity of space combat.New Combat VFXWe have also added completely new VFX for combat.Weapon impacts now feel stronger and more varied. Shield hits, hull impacts, heavy cann...
