About this game

Horn of the Walord
Become a Viking warlord and forge a kingdom through conquest, expansion and war. Lead armies across a fractured medieval world, seize territory, besiege castles and outmaneuver rival rulers in a turn-based strategy game where every decision matters and every victory is earned.
Follow the journey of Jarl Eirik Stormborn and his sworn companion Torvald Ironhand as they leave Ravenmark behind and set sail in search of glory, wealth and new lands to conquer.
Build a Kingdom through conquest
Begin with a small realm and rapidly expand your influence across neighboring lands. Secure resources, grow your population and transform a modest stronghold into a kingdom capable of dominating the world.
Every region strengthens your war effort, providing the resources needed to sustain armies, develop castles and fuel further expansion.
• Conquer and control strategically valuable territories
• Grow your population and economy
• Secure food, wood, stone, iron and gold
• Expand across diverse landscapes and terrain
• Turn a minor kingdom into a dominant power

Outsmart your enemies
Victory belongs to the ruler who plans ahead.
Success depends on choosing the right battles, building effective armies and striking at the perfect moment. Terrain, army composition, troop readiness and timing can determine the fate of entire kingdoms.
Whether launching a lightning invasion or preparing for a prolonged war, every campaign demands careful planning.
• Counter enemy armies with superior compositions
• Exploit terrain advantages during campaigns
• Manage army readiness and fatigue
• Choose when to advance and when to regroup
• Master the art of strategic warfare
Besiege castles and break kingdoms
Castles are the backbone of every realm.
Upgrade fortifications to strengthen your defenses, unlock stronger units and secure your borders. When the time comes to attack, every siege becomes a strategic challenge requiring careful preparation and the right tools for the job.
A poorly planned assault can cost an army. A well-executed siege can bring down an empire.
• Build and upgrade powerful castles
• Unlock stronger military units
• Assault enemy strongholds using ladders, battering rams and trebuchets
• Adapt siege tactics to every situation
• Capture heavily fortified regions

Face a fair but ruthless AI
Every kingdom plays by the same rules.
The AI receives no free armies, hidden resources or artificial advantages. It expands, recruits, attacks and defends using the same systems available to the player.
If you lose, it is because your opponent outplayed you.
• No cheating AI
• No hidden bonuses
• Strategic decision-making driven by risk and reward
• Three difficulty levels for different experience levels
• Challenging opponents that reward mastery
Experience a Viking Saga
Embark on a fully scripted campaign following Jarl Eirik Stormborn and Torvald Ironhand as they seek glory beyond the shores of Ravenmark.
Fight through seven handcrafted missions featuring narrative events, strategic challenges and unique objectives as rival kingdoms stand in the way of your ambitions.
• Story-driven Viking campaign
• Seven handcrafted missions
• Narrative events and character interactions
• Unique objectives and challenges
• Conquer foreign kingdoms and forge your legacy

Test yourself in unique scenarios
Beyond the campaign lies a collection of standalone challenges designed to push your strategic abilities to their limits.
Defend kingdoms against Viking invasions, overcome difficult starting positions and solve carefully crafted strategic puzzles.
Every scenario offers a different path to victory.

Endless replayability
No two wars unfold the same way.
Choose from a large collection of handcrafted maps, or generate your own random maps, that you can edit to your liking.. Randomized starting positions, resource placement and rival kingdoms ensure every skirmish presents new opportunities and challenges.
Fight for domination against up to five rival rulers and experiment with different strategies across dozens of battlefields.
• Large collection of replayable maps
• Randomly generated maps with map editor
• Up to six competing kingdoms
• Single-player skirmish mode
• Local hotseat multiplayer
• Hundreds of hours of strategic warfare
The horn has sounded.
Will your kingdom rise to greatness, or be remembered only as another fallen realm?

Update 1.7.0 — Resolution Support, Steam Cloud & Battle Improvements
1.7.0Fixed: The black screen bug when loading a saved game should now be fixed.Added: Support for wider resolutions. The game can now be played comfortably in all modern resolutions.Added: A “Start the battle” button. This allows players to calmly analyse the situation before a battle begins. It solves an issue where players did not have enough time to react to sudden attacks on their regions, especially when the Very Fast option was enabled, which could result in unexpectedly lost armies.Added: Quick Resolve and Start Battle actions can now be configured in key mappings.Added: Steam Cloud saves are now enabled.Changed: Introduced a natural population limit for regions by slowing population growth by 0.1% for every 100 population. Regions can now generally reach only around 4,000–5,000 population. This prevents extremely populated regions with huge recruit numbers, where attacks on such regions were nearly impossible.Changed: Quick Resolve now takes players directly to the Battle Summary screen.Changed: Forest regions, including forested hills, now provide slightly more wood. This should slightly increase the general availability of wood.Changed: Slightly reduced the availability of iron deposits with a size of 3 units.Changed: Missions 3 and 4 now have a few more forest regions.Changed: Optimised code to make AI turns slightly faster, especially on large maps.Changed: Updated the AI economy so computer opponents can spend their money more effectively.Changed: Made the “End Turn” window fully clickable, not just the text.Enjoying the game and updates? If you've been playing Horn of the Warlord and haven't left a Steam review yet, I'd really appreciate it. Update 1.6.1 — Fixes and Improvements
1.6.1Fixed: Human armies were not disbanded after transferring all their soldiers.Fixed: Option controls could sometimes become unresponsive when the Options screen was opened from the in-game menu.Fixed: Displayed trade prices could differ from the amount of gold actually received or spent. Prices now show the offer for the currently selected quantity, and the same per-unit price is used for the final transaction.Fixed: Enemy army and garrison intel was not restored correctly after loading a saved game.Fixed: Reworked the sound and music volume levels. Low volume settings are now considerably quieter.Changed: Improved battle casualty animations. Defeated soldiers now fall downward, drift away from the opposing formation, rotate in the direction of the blow, and fade out.Changed: Enabled movement cost tooltips when hovering over valid destinations if the selected army does not have enough movement points. The cost is now shown for every valid destination.Added: Map scroll speed option. The full range provides speeds from 0.5× to 3× of the previous default.Read full article on Community Announcements (jjmelior)Patch NotesOfficial

Update 1.5.0 — New Unit Art and Campaign Balance Changes
1.5.0Changed: Unit art has been updated to better match the game’s medieval visual style and early medieval / Viking era setting. Units now more accurately represent weapons and armour from that period, rather than using heavily plated late medieval knights.Changed: Mission 3 has been made easier on all difficulty levels to create a smoother difficulty curve. The changes mainly affect initial enemy army sizes, population sizes in enemy regions, and fixed iron/gold locations for this mission.Changed: Mission 6 has been made easier on all difficulty levels. Some region types have been slightly adjusted, the starting locations of invading Viking armies have been changed, and the chance of early clashes between the player and AI controlled Vikings has been reduced.Changed: Mission 7 is now slightly more difficult, with increased starting populations and region levels in some of Player 2’s territories.Changed: Royal Guard no longer has the Armour Piercing trait and has reduced defence value. Royal Guard remains the strongest single unit in the game, but players may now prefer hiring 2 Knights instead when they have enough population and food, as 2 Knights can reliably defeat 1 Royal Guard.Read full article on Community Announcements (jjmelior)Patch NotesOfficial
Update 1.4.0 — Fog of War, Smarter AI & New Music
1.4.0Fixed: Armies were getting deselected when one of the sides withdrew from battle.Fixed: Players could not continue bombarding a castle with trebuchets once its defence was reduced to the minimum value, even if some walls were still damaged or intact. Players can now continue bombardment to destroy additional walls, although defence will not be reduced below the minimum value.Fixed: Enlarging the map preview image was not working for scenario and campaign maps.Fixed: Trade pricing is now correctly saved and loaded.Fixed: AI region promotions were not granting all the bonuses received by human players.Changed: Trade prices now change more gradually, with fairer minimum and maximum rates based on each resource’s base value. Markets also recover faster over time, and strong resource production helps prices return to normal more quickly.Changed: Population tax income has been rebalanced to reduce excessive tax income in the late game. Developed regions still benefit from promotion, but their tax growth is now more controlled.Changed: Improved AI army composition to better counter late-game, heavily armoured armies.Changed: Redesigned AI region promotion strategy. The AI now manages its economy more effectively.Changed: Some unit statistics have been adjusted:- Horsemen attack: 15 → 18- Knights cost: 6 → 7- Mounted Knights cost: 8 → 10- Royal Guard cost: 12 → 14Changed: Redesigned some AI behaviours and tactics. Most of these changes affect Normal and Hard difficulty:- The AI is harder to surround and cut off, reducing situations that lead to easy army destruction.- AI armies are less passive. They will try to find better positions, gather recruits, or attack distant regions instead of standing idle in some situations.- AI armies will avoid battles against stronger enemies and withdraw more effectively to better positions.- The AI now better predicts battle outcomes based on collected intelligence and is less likely to attack armies it cannot defeat.- Rebalanced army...Read full article on Community Announcements (jjmelior)
