About this game

START WITH NOTHING. END WITH EVERYTHING—OR NOTHING AGAIN.

Begin at 18 with one defining choice: pursue an education or enter the workforce. From there, every month brings a new decision.

Trade stocks and options. Build companies and acquire real estate. Find love, raise a family, and prepare your children to become the next generation of your empire. Take reckless risks, attract the attention of the SEC, or lose everything in a market crash.

SELF MADE is a financial life simulator where your money, relationships, reputation, and health shape the story.

The American Dream has never been this volatile.

TRADE THE MARKET

Trade more than 50 stocks across technology, healthcare, finance, energy, retail, and other sectors. Study the market, follow the news, and decide when to make your move based on financial fundamentals—including P/E ratios, dividend yields, and earnings per share.

This isn't a clicker game.

  • Follow Sector Trends: React to dynamic breaking news and macroeconomic shifts.

  • Track Earnings Calendars: Capitalize on quarterly reports and trade after-hours price gaps.

  • Survive the Cycles: Ride multi-year bull markets and protect your capital during crashes.

  • Leverage Inside Information: Unlock tips from questionable contacts—just don’t get caught.

ENTER YOLO MODE

Looking for something riskier than buying and holding? Enter YOLO Mode for a week of high-stakes options trading with pricing based on the Black-Scholes model.

  • Trade Calls & Puts: Construct multi-leg strategies and watch your portfolio swing in real time.

  • Chase Glory or Ruin: Earn achievements like Diamond Hands, fight for a place in the Hall of Fame, and pray your next earnings bet prints.

BUILD YOUR EMPIRE

Trading is only the beginning. Turn your profits into businesses, property, influence, and power.

  • Start a Company: Design products, hire employees, invest in R&D, and pursue an IPO.

  • Build a Real-Estate Empire: Scale from starter rentals and laundromat portfolios to strip malls, golf courses, and an eight-property hotel empire.

  • Own a Sports Franchise: Sign star players, upgrade your stadium, and fill the seats.

  • Launch a Rocket Company: Complete orbital missions and compete for lucrative government contracts.

  • Run a Media Empire: Generate headlines, build an audience, and control the narrative.

  • Found a Charity: Tackle global challenges in education, healthcare, climate, and poverty.

Just be careful when mixing your business interests—manipulating stock prices with bogus headlines tends to attract regulatory attention.

LIVE AN ENTIRE LIFE

Your balance sheet is only part of your story.

  • Find Love: Meet 11 potential partners with distinct personalities—go on dates, get married, or face a costly divorce.

  • Raise a Family: Have children, shape their education, and prepare them to inherit your empire.

  • Build a Career: Start in fast food, earn an MBA, climb the corporate ladder, and reach the executive suite.

  • Enjoy Your Wealth: Upgrade from a basement apartment to a penthouse, then collect sports cars, private jets, and yachts.

  • Visit Atlantic City: Take a trip to the casino and put your money on the line.

  • Protect Your Health: Your lifestyle choices can shorten—or extend—your limited lifespan.

FACE THE CONSEQUENCES

Every decision carries risk. Become too reckless and the SEC may come knocking.

  • Survive Legal Scrutiny: Face insider-trading investigations, evidence gathering, courtroom trials, and fines.

  • Choose Your Defense: Hire anything from an overworked public defender to an elite legal team.

  • Serve Your Time: Spend years in Club Fed—or somewhere considerably worse.

  • Survive the Brink: Watch a crash erase years of progress and claw your way back from forced liquidations—bankruptcy is always one bad bet away.

One bad decision can change the course of an entire life.

KEY FEATURES

  • 50+ Tradable Stocks with detailed company fundamentals, earnings events, and market-driven price movements

A COMPLETE GAME THAT KEEPS GROWING

SELF MADE is fully released, but development continues with fixes, balance improvements, and substantial new gameplay systems. A full hedge-fund management system is currently in development. Its scope and release timing may change as development progresses.

HOW WILL YOUR STORY END?

Retire at 65 with billions in the bank and a family that loves you—or flame out at 40 with an SEC record, an ex-spouse, and a portfolio full of worthless calls.

    Update 2026.08.29 — Dynasty & Quality-of-Life Overhaul

Hello, investors! This update round is driven almost entirely by your posts on the discussion boards — special thanks to Doomi, whose detailed feedback and hedge fund threads shaped most of this update, and to everyone else who took the time to write up what they hit. On top of that, an internal audit pass closed out every remaining high-severity finding from our full-game review. Hedge Funds — Your Questions, AnsweredNot running a fund yet? The beta is opt-in: right-click the game in your library → Properties → Betas, enter the code EnableHedgeFund, and select the hedgefund branch. New Fund Reports screen. Browsable month-by-month and yearly reports, from both the Full Desk and the Compact view. No more relying on the recap popup as your only history — page through past months, or flip the yearly toggle for January-to-December changes. Fees now land where you can see them. Management and performance fees settle in December and appear on December's statement. This also kills the doubled December recap some of you saw in January. Manager Credential screen. Open Manager Credential / Desk Mastery from the Full Desk (Capital + Progression group). It shows your rolling 36-month annualized personal return beside the solo and partner requirements for every larger fund — so you can see exactly what an institutional launch takes before your current fund closes. Until 36 months of data exist, it shows months collected instead of a misleading 0%. Contribute Capital, where you expected it. The button now lives in the Full Desk. The cash shortcuts are 50% and 95% — the 95% option deliberately leaves a reserve for taxes and ordinary bills, exactly as suggested on the boards. Leverage expectations are fair now. An institutional LP that joins while your fund is visibly running a higher leverage stance records that stance as its baseline. Investors no longer complain about risk they knowingly signed up for — though raising leverage further can still breach them. Your fund survives yo...

    Update 2026.08.23 — Dynasty & Quality-of-Life Overhaul

Hello, investors!Since the August 17 patch, we’ve completed a major pass across controller support, Steam Cloud saves, business balance, hedge funds, multigenerational play, localization, and responsive presentation. Here is the complete changelog.Steam Cloud & Save Reliability“Keep This Device” can now resolve a save conflict while Steam Cloud is disabled or offline. The local decision is stored durably, preventing autosaves, load screens, and save-slot cards from reopening the same conflict every month.Added defensive migration and repair for malformed settings, Hall records, relationship data, property records, and other legacy save structures.Companies, Markets & AccountingA product starting at 10% visibility now reaches 50% in roughly 26 months at minimum budget, or about 18 months at twice the minimum. The existing 5% monthly visibility cap remains unchanged. The first-year demand penalty now fades smoothly from 50% to 100% over twelve months instead of ending at a sudden cliff.Live sales and dashboard forecasts now use the same marketing curves. The advertising row now forecasts time to 50% or 90% visibility and warns when visibility will fade, stall, or hold.Restored manual CEO strategy tabs for:Film studios: Content Spend and Licensing StrategyTelecoms: Service Investment and Subscriber StrategyConsumer goods and retail: Supply Chain and Pricing StrategyFossil and renewable energy: Capital Expenditure and Dividend PolicyMonthly income and expense history is now finalized after property, lifestyle, dividend, hedge-fund, and other late-month transactions have settled.History rows now include net cash flow and detailed income and expense breakdowns.Hedge FundsInstitutional funds that outperform beyond the $20B capacity ceiling no longer lose their LP population permanently.Closed funds now begin waitlist backfill from 50% of the previous month’s institutional redemptions. Performance, reputation, and appetite modifiers can increase this up to 100% of the capital th...

Steam Deck and Game Controller Support + Gameplay Enhancements

Steam Deck: full controller supportUntil now, SELF MADE on Deck was a mouse game with an on-screen keyboard. Version 1.815 makes the whole game playable from the controller:Left stick moves a cursor (or steps focus item-to-item on menus), A clicks, right stick scrolls, B backs out of screens.A hint bar shows the controls, in all 7 languages, and disappears the moment you touch the mouse. The on-screen keyboard now reliably reappears when you re-select a text field. No more "hold Shift/Ctrl" tooltips on a device with no Shift or Ctrl.Scrolling with the right stick no longer silently edits sliders it passes over — that one affected about 40 sliders, including budget allocations and bet sizes. This is Deck-only on purpose. On desktop the game should plays as it always has.Steam Deck: readable and un-croppedThe Deck now renders the full native 1280×800 canvas at 100% scale. Company creation and investment properties were literally cropped off-screen before; text was below Valve's legibility minimum. Both fixed. The finances overlay no longer sits on top of buttons. The worst case: the Start Company button was up to 100% covered. Real Estate, the Newspaper, and the computer desktop icons all got the same treatment. The news ticker's invisible click zone used to eat the bottom 40px of the screen after it faded. Fixed everywhere, desktop included.Docking and undocking mid-screen now re-lays-out live instead of sticking with the wrong layout. The game caps at 60 FPS on Deck (the sim doesn't need 90 — your battery does) and the download got smaller for everyone.Still on the list: a couple of dialogs graze the bottom hint bar at 720p external resolutions. Known, measured, being fixed. Also, some buttons in the apartment (i.e. diploma in the cheapest apartment) have to be repositioned to avoid colliding with the HUD, I'm still outlining a plan to make this look prettier.Your saves: much harder to loseThe save system got its biggest rework since launch, aimed at every way Steam Cloud...

Stability Improves and Hedge Fund Beta

Introducing Hedge Fund Mode — a New Endgame Career (Opt-In Beta)You've beaten the market with your own money. Hedge Fund mode asks a harder question: can you do it with someone else's?This is the new endgame career we've been building: launch a fund, raise outside capital, build a research team, run long and short books, collect fees, keep your investors from bolting — and, if you've got the stomach for it, drag a company's board into a fight it didn't ask for. It's live now as an opt-in beta on the hedgefund branch.OTHER PEOPLE'S MONEYAt minimum: you put up $2 million of your own; the Mara Voss Family Office seeds you with $8 million more. Mara is not a passive line item — she has a mandate, a leverage ceiling, and a loyalty meter, and if you disappoint her she takes most of your fund home. You get paid the classic "2 and 20," with a real high-water mark: after a losing stretch, investors don't pay you again for climbing back to where they already were.NOT A TRADING CLICKERYou don't micromanage every share. Research companies (reports are noisy estimates, not foreknowledge), assign conviction to the ideas you believe in, and the desk trades toward your targets each month through real liquidity — big orders slip and partial-fill. A manual order ticket exists when you want to move now, but conviction decides where the book ends up.Your fund levels up through five tiers of Desk Mastery, and the unlocks are the career: you start long-only at 1.0x leverage and earn your way to shorts, quants, fee strategy, and eventually prime brokerage at 3.0x. Your researchers are people with names, specialties, and ethics — and payroll is a real constraint.WAYS TO LOSEDrawdowns trigger redemptions; redemptions force selling; a shrinking fund can't carry its staff. That death spiral is fully modeled: hit zero NAV and you're insolvent, or bleed below the viability floor and get wound down. Use leverage you can survive.Insider tips and planted rumors work, too. They also build Scrutiny,...

    Third Small July Update

    1) Keyboard focus / window-stacking Previously was allowed to tab to a button, mash Space/Enter, and stack infinite copies of a window; focus never entered the popup or stayed contained. Now the focus is contained to a popup, preventing an infinite window situation. 2) Two non-paying issues: Deferring year-end taxes to April skipped April's whole paycheck (early-return before the pay code). Moved the tax check to run after the paycheck. Workplace-injury recovery left you silently unpaid — recovery cleared the flag but never restored your work hours. Now it does. 3) Spouse vacation never showed its $10k/25hr cost, didn't gate the button, and said "wonderful vacation!" even when it silently failed. Now shows the cost, disables when unaffordable, and only celebrates on success. 4) In the books. the income_earned handler is the single accumulator, but six sources also manually added the same amount. Removed the redundant adds (+ a tips double-count and a short-selling-fee row). (4/4 test: $1,660 counted once, not $3,320.) 5) An exploit: price floors (update_gmi, market events, whale mechanic) re-inflated your own company's split-collapsed price to $1 while the share count stayed multiplied; and the once-per-year split cooldown was, previously, dead code, this is fixed to disallow this exploit. 6) Converted the 8 highest-risk popups (MediaCompanyManager ×5, EstateTax, EndGame ×2) from transient Windows to Control overlays — the proven cause of the recurring engine use-after-free crash. 7) Re-opened hotel buying with a "may still be unstable on some GPUs" notice (7 languages), and re-enabled Aurora Ledgers (the real-estate tax-shelter elite service) by removing its UI lockout. These were locked out during the summer sale and are still unstable. We think the crash can sometimes be linked to integrated GPUs, but plan to still look into future crash reports.
