New game in development: Nostalgiallo.
It's been a while, but I'm finally back with a Steam project after a couple on months smacking my head against a wall while making jam games. This time it will be a smaller project, since the demonic possession gamedev energy that fueled Kuentame seems to be on vacation. As cool as the 3D pre-rendered graphics look, there's an issue that's making it hard for me to try it again: my job involves computers, so having my hobby projects be entirely made on a computer becomes really tiring for both the brain and eyes. With my earlier games that problem was avoided using stock images since editing them took less time that making 3D models, but that style had the problem or making me dependent on an Internet connection. For a while I was stuck between these 2 options, until...Something I've been wanting to do in a long while as a "nostalgia horror" based on old Spanish slapstick comics, or "tebeos". Think "Mortadelo y Filemón" or "Superlopéz". What held me back is that I wanted to reflect the chaotic feel of this comics in the gameplay while keeping it a horror game. For years no idea seemed to work... until a while ago, in which a combat system I made for a game jam project actually worked fine.To reflect the comics' style I decided to use hand-drawn doodles for the background and normal characters, and photograph them via webcam. To make the monsters stand out I'm using some webcam photos of objects in them, which means I finally found a style that does not require everything to be made digitally and can be done offline. So, here it is (at least its page): Nostalgiallo! Point-and-click puzzles! Democracy-based combat system! Weird eldritch sci-fi lore! It's still fairly early in development, I'm trying out having the game page up before the demo is released:Read full article on Community Announcements (ApeHardware)Patch NotesOfficial

Kuentame has been released
It's been a long-ish journey (6 months), but here we are at the finish line. Kuentame is now available. This game is a pretty big deal for me, since it's a major artstyle change. Rather than my usual collage graphics made from stock images and photos, Kuentame uses pre-rendered 3D images. The main driving force behind this change was wanting to be able to work on projects entirely offline, without constantly needing an Internet connection to look for stock images. However, I made sure to keep the old style's surrealism in all of the game's assets.Nothing left to say, enjoy the game!(ApeHardware is not responsible from any anomalous psychological effects derived from playing Kuentame)Read full article on Community Announcements (ApeHardware)AnnouncementsOfficial
Devlog 5 - Level 6 / 6 complete & release date
At long last, the final level has been completed. Most of the development was fairly fast as this part of the game is a mashup of all previous mechanics. The final exam, the test of what you have learned, the ultimate showdown of ultimate destiny. The final boss, on the other hand, was quite challenge. All I can say without going into spoiler territory is that it's completely different from all the bosses that came before, and it pushed the game's systems to the limit. There's also a secret boss that can be found with some exploration and effort. All that remains is testing, so a release date of 08/05/2026 seems like a reasonable time margin to ensure there are no major fuck-ups. So far only one tester has fully played it and feedback was quite positive despite running on a few bugs (which have already been fixed).I've also been trying to get in contact with translators to localize the game into French and Japanese. The former seems like it could get done before the release date, but the later is an unknown at the moment.Read full article on Community Announcements (ApeHardware)AnnouncementsOfficial
Devlog 4 - GAMEPLAY SPOILERS & MINOR STORY SPOILERS!!! - Level 5 / 6 completed
The spoiler warning for this devlog also involves the narrative a bit, as it's impossible to discuss what makes this level a big deal without giving away a minor plot detail.Last chance to stop reading...................At the end of level 4, the protagonist has all of their abilities disabled.Level 5 is a metroidvania in which you recover them. This is why this section took longer than the previous ones. It's basically 3 small levels connected together, which requires more assets and a change in level design. While the game's system handled the change pretty well, it was quite a challenge to plan out the map so everything came together nicely. Still, the final result is something I'm really happy with. The map itself is actually rather simple to prevent the player from getting lost easily. There are also a couple if times in which you can take an alternate route one you've gotten an specific ability. Also, when I said 3 levels, I don't mean just the environments. There are 2.5 new bosses in this section.Yes, two point five. One of them is less of a fight and more of a series of spooky events.Read full article on Community Announcements (ApeHardware)
