About this game

Chapter 1 is available for free!

Hello everyone!

I've resumed (albeit slowly) development on THE DOUBLE! Chapter 2 will be released around September 2026. If you've just discovered this game, I'd love for you to play Chapter 1 (which is available for free). I also hope to be able to complete Chapter 3 by the end of this year, and then finish the game in early 2027, releasing the final Chapter 4.

Play it and leave your feedback. I read everything: many bugs and oddities in the game have been fixed with the help of players, for which I'm grateful!

About the Game

MEET YOUR DOUBLE

You wake up. Morning. St. Petersburg, 19th Century. And you're about to meet someone who looks exactly like you. Lives like you. Steals your life.

What begins as a psychological nightmare becomes an interactive game of identity, madness, and the terror of self-recognition.

Based on Fyodor Dostoevsky's 1846 novella The Double, this is not a retelling - it's a modern exploration where literary horror becomes interactive horror.

THE UNIQUE CARD SYSTEM: FATE MEETS STRATEGY

Every confrontation with your Double is a game of 21, but with one twist—Tarot cards that shift reality itself.

How it works:

  • Play 21 against your doppelgänger for survival and sanity

  • Draw Tarot cards that modify the rules, alter probability, bend fate

  • Same cards create entirely different outcomes based on your decisions

  • Replayability: Dozens of card combinations generate new stories

PSYCHOLOGICAL STORYTELLING

The Setting: 19th-century St. Petersburg rendered as a character-opulent halls, shadowy streets, a city that mirrors your psychological descent.

The Narrative:

  • Notes and journals that immerse you in fractured memory

  • Dialogue that shifts based on your choices and card draws

  • An investigation into the nature of identity itself

  • Themes inspired by Dostoevsky: duality, madness, self-recognition, obsession

The Horror: Not jumpscares-first. Psychological dread. The creeping realization that you might not be the "real" version.

GAMEPLAY

Card Battles (Strategic decision-making)

  • Hybrid 21 + Tarot system that rewards experimentation

  • Same deck, infinite replays, different strategies and outcomes

  • Tension between optimal play and meaningful narrative

Exploration (Atmospheric immersion)

  • Navigate St. Petersburg discovering clues, hidden items, secrets

  • Find objects that unlock dialogue and memories

  • Uncover the truth about your Double

Narrative Choices (Meaningful consequence)

  • Decisions that branch the story meaningfully

  • Dialogue that changes based on previous choices

  • Multiple paths through the story

Puzzles (Thematic challenge)

  • Logic sequences inspired by Dostoevsky's writings

  • Psychological challenges that mirror story themes

UPD: I was planning to release 4 chapters of this game, but later I decided to temporarily stop developing it. This is only the first chapter!

While creating this game, I was inspired by games such as: Signalis, Inscryption, Detention, as well as Russian literature, chthonic horror, and the city of Saint Petersburg.

Each chapter expands the card system's complexity and narrative depth. Also it’s a new psychological puzzles! A unified save system carries your choices forward-decisions in Chapter 1 echo in Chapters 2-4.

Post-launch: In addition to developing the game's parts, I also plan to create a free update with endless maps without having to replay the story!

WHY THIS GAME MATTERS

For Literary Enthusiasts: Dostoevsky's psychological masterpiece becomes interactive. His themes of duality, madness, and self-recognition are now something you experience, not just read about.

For Horror Fans: Psychological horror done right - atmosphere over jumpscares, dread over gore.

For Cards Games Lovers: Untypical system which compare strategy, meaning puzzles and forture!

For Strategy Players: The card system creates infinite replayability. Optimize your draws, discover new combinations, master the mechanics.

For Everyone Else: A game that stands on its own. No prior knowledge needed. Dostoevsky's themes enhance the experience but aren't required.

THE DOUBLE — Chapter 2 is now available!

Hey!I'd planned to release it a bit later, but (sort of, heh) I finished it early and thought: why waste time? So, Chapter 2 is available as a DLC and with a launch discount! What's waiting for you inside?Meeting with Doctor RutenspitzHe's surprised by your arrival. He didn't expect to see you. And you, partly, didn't expect him either. He mustn't figure out that something is off with you. Lie and tell the truth, and you'll be able to leave. Or rather… to escape. The Tarot SpreadTarot, like regular playing cards, has 4 suits: Pentacles (also known as Diamonds), Cups (also known as Hearts), Swords (also known as Spades), and Wands (also known as Clubs). You'll need to assemble your personality across 3 facets in a Solitaire-like game where both luck and strategy matter.Depending on which facets came together, you'll get a puzzle for reading yourself a forecast from 3 Tarot cards. You get 3 attempts as well.Arrival at the BallYou managed to slip away from the doctor to reach the ball hosted by your bel… by Klara Olsufyevna at the Berendeev mansion. A masquerade ball in the Venetian style, with suspiciously realistic masks and unsuspiciously suspicious characters. Is it all that simple? Not at all!An engaging Reigns-style mechanic awaits you, where you need to balance between 4 powers: Light, Rank, Clergy, and… Shadow. You can't afford to drop anyone's respect, and you also can't afford to draw too much attention to yourself!Use the items you found in the apartment to "disarm" the powers. And, I hope you haven't spent all your Tarot? Heh.Escape from the Ball and 21 + Tarot, but… with the Minor Arcana! You've finally managed to meet the Double. But the meeting is short, because… you've run into the croupier again. Now, at the start of each round, you draw a Minor and a Major Arcana. The first works as before, while the second either ruins the entire hand or… helps you beat even the Death card! The game features music by Franz Schubert and Frédéric Chopin. This is the second of fou...

Why am I making a game based on Dostoevsky's novella "The Double"?

Hey! Chapter 2 is still in the works, but I already can't wait to tell you why I got myself into this game in the first place. "The Double" isn't Dostoevsky's most famous work. People often call it his first flop, actually. And that's exactly why it fits a twist-game so well. Here's the stuff that hooked me personally. It was only his second book, and it flopped right away. After "Poor Folk", Dostoevsky woke up famous, and everyone was obviously waiting for a second miracle. But the critics tore "The Double" apart. His first real failure. Before his arrest and hard labor he'd managed to write a few more things, but one of them, "Netochka Nezvanova", he never finished. That same arrest got in the way.the house where Dostoevsky wrote most of "The Double". Vladimirsky Prospekt 11 (the Pryanichnikov house, still standing).Everything great was written after the hard labor. "Crime and Punishment", "The Idiot", "Demons", "The Brothers Karamazov". All of that comes later, after his years of penal servitude for a political case. Siberia really did a number on his mind. And that's what makes "The Double" special: it shows us a completely different Dostoevsky. A younger one, not yet ground down by prison (though just as gloomy, let's be honest).the house where Dostoevsky was arrested. The Schil house, Voznesensky Prospekt 8 (still standing, rebuilt). And he was only 24. That still blows my mind. A fresh graduate of the Engineering School, a guy who'd spent a while just sitting in the drafting office, and he goes and impresses Belinsky himself, the top critic in the empire. With what? With how precisely he understood what goes on inside his characters.the house where Belinsky held his literary evenings. The Lopatin house, Nevsky Prospekt 68 (demolished and rebuilt from scratch back in 2011)."The Double" was the only thing he wanted to fully rewrite. He thought the idea was brilliant but the execution a failure, and for years he kept coming back to the idea of rewriting the whole ...

Bugs, Just Cards! and…a bit about Chapter 2💬

Hey everyone!I've updated the game a little.Thank you all for playing it and leaving so many nice comments, reporting bugs, and everything else. Please, if you have any issues or suggestions — write to me! I really do read everything and then work through it.1.Bug fixes and improvements:The 5 rubles problem: I saw a lot of confusion about how 5 rubles appeared in the Inventory. The answer: thanks to a bug! This is now fixed — it's a small quest tied to one of the notes. The card problem: I discovered to my horror that during the Blackjack+Tarot stage, it could skip you way ahead in rounds. This is also fixed: you have to win 5 times without lives, and 5 times with them!Fixed (I think) the issue with temporarily disappearing objects in the ApartmentsF12 and screenshots! Everything works now — a very annoying engine quirk that it doesn't work out of the boxWindowed mode can now be enabled in SettingsUpdated some sprites and effects, added shadows under cards and stuff like that2.Just Cards!A standalone card mode is now active on the main screen. The run is simple:No livesYou need to win 33 timesThere's a regular Tarot draft every 5th turn and on turn 32It's just cards with no strings attached — people asked for this a lotA general overview of active Tarot cards has been added to the Notes right awayConceptually it's no different from the card game in Chapter 1But I have ideas on how to greatly improve the standalone Just Cards! experience3.A bit…about Chapter 2Right now it's in a peculiar state: some things are being designed, while others already have finished scenes. What awaits you?A scene inspired by the wonderful Reigns game series. Try to hold your ground in the world of old St. PetersburgA scene at the doctor's, which will have (I hope) a very interesting mechanicAnd of course…expanding the boundaries of the card game! Thanks for playing,-BadGafi
