Dev Diary #7— Armor System
Dev Diary #7— Armor System Welcome back, Guardians! Today we’ll be exploring an important element of combat: the Armor System. We have implemented a tier-based armor system that works in tandem with different Damage Types. These damage types have unique properties and bonuses against specific armor tiers. This allows each weapon and stratagem to have its own combat role, whether that’s penetrating medium armor, performing well against shields, or destroying buildings. Armor is not a one-size-fits-all system. Enemy units and buildings can feature different Armor Tiers and even Weakpoints. Let’s take the Arthromare as an example. Its top shell is considered Medium Armor. Standard weapons like the ARX-15, the default Guardian rifle, will ricochet off it. However, weapons with penetrating damage types, like the HMG-44 Suppressor machine gun, will penetrate the armor and damage the Arthromare. Weakpoints, on the other hand, are your primary targets. These are areas where incoming damage is amplified. In the Arthromare’s case, the weakpoint is an unarmored area. However, some enemies may have armored weakpoints, requiring penetrating weapons to exploit them effectively. If you manage to penetrate those weakpoints, the damage dealt will be even higher. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/45884068/a8b0152352eaf95cbd6a2ed53cca348aeaf3554c.jpg As you progress, you will encounter increasingly dangerous enemies. For example, the Advanced Combat Droid of the Void Empire is a fully armored unit with only two small weakpoints to attack. Without a penetrating weapon, it can become a very tough enemy. {STEAM_CLAN_IMAGE}/45884068/0c466ad06be1fef313cd0704cc0f59c011e4f999.jpg Buildings also feature Armor Tiers and can contain segments with different armor strengths, as well as weakpoints affected by specific Damage Types. For example, you might be able to destroy a turret emplacement with a grenade, but tougher structures like a Cannon Tower may require the raw firepower of an orbital bombardment from ...Read full article on Community Announcements (SheikSama Virtual Age)AnnouncementsOfficial
Dev Diary #6 — Mission Type Showcase: Sabotage Facility
Dev Diary #6 — Mission Type Showcase: Sabotage Facility Welcome back, Guardians! Today, we’re exploring one of the central elements of the Guardians Planetfall gameplay loop: Mission Types. Throughout the war, Guardians will encounter many different missions across the galaxy. These objectives will form the foundation of your deployments, and today we’re showcasing one of them: Sabotage Facility. Infiltrating a Void Outpost This mission requires Guardians to infiltrate an enemy Void outpost and destroy critical infrastructure. In this example, the target is a Void Anti-Air Battery. The facility is protected not only by enemy units, but also by static defenses. Mines, automated turrets, and enormous cannons may appear throughout the compound. The number and strength of these defenses vary depending on the mission difficulty, so higher-level operations may require stronger weapons, better equipment, and careful coordination. Disabling the Defenses Once inside the facility, Guardians must call in a special Stratagem containing demolition charges and plant them on the Anti-Air Batteries. However, calling support may not always be possible. Additional defenses—or even a nearby Jammer Tower—can prevent you from deploying Stratagems. When this happens, you’ll need to infiltrate the facility, locate and deactivate the Jammer Tower, and then call in the demolition charges. The Void Empire won’t remain idle while you work. Reinforcements may arrive, forcing you to plant the charges in the middle of an active firefight. Escape Before Detonation Once every charge has been planted, all that remains is to activate the delayed detonation and escape from the facility with a big bang. Just don’t take too long. If you become delayed inside the compound, you may go down with the explosion… just like we did. More Than the Main Objective This showcase covers only a small part of what can happen during a mission. While this clip focuses on completing the primary objective, Guardians can ...Read full article on Community Announcements (SheikSama Virtual Age)AnnouncementsOfficial
Dev Diary #5 — VR Interactivity
Welcome back, Guardians! This Dev Diary is a special one, focused on something core to VR: interactivity. Looking back at Frontline, we identified areas to improve, and many new opportunities to expand. Let’s start with physical interaction. One major step forward is your hands. We want as much natural interaction as possible: pressing buttons, pulling levers, opening doors, grabbing objects and manipulating them directly. These systems allow us to build deeper gameplay interactions. With the variety of mission types, we’ve introduced mechanics that require you to actively use your hands, sometimes even forcing you to let go of your weapon in meaningful moments. One feature we’re especially excited about is the wrist menu for stratagem selection. There are many more interactions as well, like carrying and inserting battery cells, but we’re saving some surprises. Weapons are also evolving. Our goal is for each one to feel distinct with purpose, not just stronger. More advanced weapons come with more complex reloads and handling, adding depth through interaction. We also want the world to feel more alive. You are a Guardian of the Federation, the weapon of humanity, but even weapons need support. That’s where NPCs come in, and yes… they interact with you too. And lastly… This is a coop game, a bit of silliness will ensure good laughs The next Dev Diary will focus on one operation: Sabotage Facility, so stay tuned for the next one. We hope you enjoyed this behind-the-scenes look. Dev Diary #4 — Stratagems
Welcome back, Guardians! This Dev Diary will be a short and direct one, just like the stratagems you can call from your ship to support your missions! We currently have three types of stratagems: Offensive, Defensive, and Supply. Offensive Stratagems The Offensive Stratagems focus on pure destruction, huge damage dealers designed to eliminate even the most stubborn enemies, like the Orbital Laser. Defensive Stratagems The Defensive Stratagems are focused on protection and support for the Guardian. Some stratagems require crafting, as they are consumed after each use. One example is the well-known Combat Robot, a staple of every Guardian since the first Galactic War. Supply Stratagems The Supply Stratagems provide Guardians with weapons, ammunition, or reinforcements. If you remember the first Dev Diary, we showcased the Machinegun. This is a weapon that must be called into each mission using the appropriate stratagem. And of course, when you’re out of ammo and firing the last bullets of your secondary weapon, you can always call for an Ammo Drop from your ship to resupply. Right now we have 5 powerful offensive stratagems, 7 defensive stratagems (vehicles included!), and 5 supply stratagems, offering a wide range of tools to destroy the enemies of the Federation. You will be able to unlock them by leveling up and gathering special resources to research them, expanding your ship’s arsenal. The next Dev Diary will focus on the VR interactivity in Guardians Planetfall, so stay tuned for the next one in a few weeks. We hope you enjoyed this behind-the-scenes look. Dev Diary #3 — Laser Rifle Gun Concept!
Welcome guardians to the third Dev Diary for Guardians Planetfall!Today I’m giving you a small tease of the laser rifle you all saw me shoot at a tree in the trailer… Not all Guardians are well trained! This weapon falls into the Primary Weapon category and is unlocked using Federation Credits to increase your firepower. The Laser Rifle is an energy-based weapon powered by a rechargeable battery cell. With good trigger discipline, a skilled Guardian can take advantage of its regeneration system to maintain sustained fire without ever swapping batteries. However, overheating will force a battery replacement, and those are limited during a mission. From a design perspective, this weapon was special. We didn’t want energy weapons to simply be “higher damage” alternatives. Each weapon in Planetfall must have a clear purpose and gameplay identity. For the Laser Rifle, the recharge mechanic became its core feature: as long as you avoid overheating, the available shots will slowly regenerate. And of course, we always keep our most important metric in mind: how cool it feels to use.Variation SheetWe explored multiple variations during development, including different moving parts, VR ergonomics, and mechanical behaviors. From these early explorations, we established a strong baseline for the weapon’s silhouette, aesthetic direction, and VR handling, which guided us toward the final concept.Final ConceptWe hope you enjoyed this behind-the-scenes look. If you’d like to see more and help shape the future of the game, join the Discord community, make your voice heard, and wishlist the game!Join the Discord Community!Thank you for building Planetfall with us. 🚀P.S: The Federation’s laser and shield technology isn’t entirely human-made. It was salvaged and reverse-engineered from an ancient species about which the Guardians know very little…Read full article on Community Announcements (SheikSama Virtual Age)
