Blocking Blocks is a simple puzzle game where you direct a block from one square-shaped hole to another. The game is all about facing yourself and your own decisions. For example, if you're a casual player, the game is very casual to play; if you're not a casual player, then...

Direct a block from one square hole to another in GSheaf’s Blocking Blocks, where each level presents new obstacles. This indie strategy game offers a casual approach for all players, making tough decisions key to success.

About this game

"Well, well, well; if it isn't the consequences of my own actions..."

Blocking Blocks is a minimal puzzle game that teaches a valuable lesson about short-term and long-term planning.

The (short-term) goal of the game is simple: get the player block (usually red) to the square hole without colliding with any of the other blocks in the level.

The long-term goal is to do this again, and again, and again... a total of five times to beat the level. The catch is that everything you did in previous rounds of the level are repeated each time you play.

If you can get to the goal before the "ghosts" of your past decisions do, you get bonus points!

It takes five rounds to officially beat a level, but there are an additional five bonus "unblocked" rounds afterwards. Don't worry; they're completely optional... if you don't care about the true ending.

Epilepsy warning

As the game is at least somewhat aesthetically inspired by arcade games of yore, there are moments where the colours on screen will shift in brightness dramatically. These colour transitions may be uncomfortable or harmful to players with photosensitive epilepsy or similar conditions.

Obligatory: this game was written in Rust.

    Patch notes for Demo v0.2.0

It's great to see the demo getting so much love and attention! I embarrassingly only noticed just recently that there have been discussion posts giving some feedback for the game. I've been making most of my patches silent so far (since they've been pretty minor), but I figured I'd highlight a couple of quality-of-life updates I've added for v0.2.0, since they touch on some of the feedback I've received so far.Fast-forwardingThe first five rounds in each level can get pretty boring if you know what you're doing (especially the first round), so you can also use the select button (I think this defaults to the space bar) to fast-forward while you're playing. (This is something I added already in an earlier patch, but I think it deserves some attention.)No more leaderboard initialsI had a local leaderboard because arcade / older games I used to play had them, but in hindsight they don't really make sense to have unless they're globally available on Steam. I could have tried to set up a global leaderboard, but cheaters do a really good job of mucking with leaderboards in most games, so I'll hold off on this.Instead, I've changed to a "save replay" system. You also no longer have to restrict replay names to three-letter initials. If you have an existing leaderboard, it should automatically break into individual replays if you load your save with an updated demo. They should end up in BlockingBlocksData/BuildingBlocks/Level_*/ as *.data files. You can retry from the first UNBLOCKED stageIf you've mastered the first five rounds of the level (and effectively "beat" the level), you shouldn't be forced to repeat them if ever you want to play the level again and try to get 45 points. Now, if you go to view saved replays of a level, there is an option to use that replay's first five rounds, and retry the level starting at stage UNBLOCKED + 1. This will let you get right into the action much more quickly! Thanks to everyone who's played the game so far, and especially those who have...
