About this game
The Netherworld Reimagined
Karma Exorcist is an Eastern mythology-themed side-scrolling Metroidvania action-adventure game.
Inspired by Chinese mythology, this game presents a fresh interpretation of the underworld: good and evil karma function like an invisible magnetic field, influencing the balance of the Three Realms. When evil karma spreads, disasters follow. To counter this, gods and buddhas gradually established the underworld—with Meng Po Soup (Potion of Oblivion) to erase memories, the Eighteen Levels of Hell to punish guilty souls, and more—all to maintain the cycle of existence. Here, you will explore a world of the dead that feels both familiar and strange.
Game Features
Free Exploration, Multiple Paths: From the shores of the River of Forgetfulness adorned with fields of red spider lilies, to the endless deserts beyond the Ghost Gate, the serene Naihe Bridge, the magnificent Hall of Kings, and the distinct peaks of the Five Ghost Emperor Mountains—most of this kingdom of the dead is open for you to freely explore. There is never just one path to the ending; hidden stories and areas await discovery as you adventure onward.
Dynamic Combat, React and Adapt: Wield a 360° Chain Hook alongside dashes, double jumps, rolls, and combat artifacts to outmaneuver enemies in fast-paced battles. Numerous monsters feature unique combat mechanics that demand keen observation and careful responses. Each boss encounter is meticulously designed with distinct styles, delivering intense and thrilling duels where you react and adapt—culminating in the supreme satisfaction of overcoming powerful foes.
Myriad Artifacts, Shape Your Destiny: Collect various artifacts during your journey, each with its own unique combat module, allowing you to mix and match freely. Equip multiple Soul Gems to create a combat style that is uniquely yours. Additionally, utilize consumables such as talismans and elixirs to aid your travels through this perilous underworld.

Karma Exorcist Playtest Q&A
Thank you all for your incredible support! Since the initial reveal and the launch of our playtest, Karma Exorcist has received a wealth of questions and feedback from players. We’ve compiled this Q&A to address the most frequently asked questions from the community.Q1: What is the current development progress of Karma Exorcist, and when will it be released? A1: Currently, the game's development is in the late stages of mass content production. Our next step is to dive deep into continuously polishing the levels, animations, combat, stats/balancing, and various other aspects. Conservatively, we estimate that the official release will require another 8 to 12 months of development.Q2: The audio feels quite weak right now. Will this be improved? A2: Yes! Due to our overall development schedule, the sound effects and music currently used in the trailer and the playtest are placeholder assets. We will completely replace and upgrade them in subsequent development phases. Audio is a crucial component of a Metroidvania game, and we will absolutely put in the effort to polish it to the highest standard.Q3: What content is available in the Playtest version, and when will the playtest end? A3: The playtest version includes 2 major areas: the Yellow Springs Road and the Ghost Gate. It features a total of 6 boss encounters, allows you to try out 7 different Artifacts, and provides over 3 hours of gameplay. The playtest runs from April 27th to May 5th, after which we will close access.Q4: What will be the main quality differences between the current playtest version and the final release? A4: The official release will undergo comprehensive enhancements built upon the framework of this playtest. You can expect significant improvements in the handling/controls, actions, level design experience, music and sound effects, visual effects, item pacing/economy and etc.Q5: Why is there no downward slash (pogo attack)? A5: In our current design, the blade is just one of the many Artifacts,...Read full article on Community Announcements (old dr**fire)
