About this game

After a picnic in the woods, it's time to go home. But the nearby flora is determined to take you off course and make your life miserable.

This is a rage game focused on traps and gags. There's a surprise around every corner to keep your hike infuriating. Try to avoid the traps, inevitably die from them, and try again. These trees are unfair, mean, and merciless. They will use your expectations against you to humiliate you.

In this game, you can:

  • Get lost in several biomes as your journey goes terribly off course

  • Collect cool hats (or ugly hats, depending on your fashion sense)

Trees Hate You Has a Release Date!

Hello tree victims!Earlier this week, we revealed a new trailer at the Future Games Show at gamescom. It was quite a surprise to be invited to such an event, but it was an good chance to finally announce the release date for Trees Hate You: November 16, 2026!That'll make it close to a year since I announced Trees Hate You in late 2025. Now we just need to wait a few more months to finally get the punchline of this joke of a game.New Key ArtYou may have noticed that Trees Hate You has new cover art, thanks to the illustrator Austin Bradley. We commissioned the old art early in development, before we had a clear idea of the kinds of trees that would appear in the game, so it felt right to revisit it now to better represent more of the kinds of traps you'll actually find in the game. Progress Update? Not much to share this time, since most of the focus lately has been on spoilery late-game levels. But we've continued to add more tree types, more traps, and more secrets for those who explore away from the main path. This is turning into a pretty weird game, but I'll shut up now so there are still some surprises when it releases in a few months.

    Demo Updates & Next Fest

Hello Tree Victims,These past few weeks we continued polishing the Steam demo, resulting in the following quality of life changes and adjustments (If you played recently, you may have already seen them):TimerDeath CounterA new checkpoint near the end of level 1Glasses of any kind (if you're wearing them) now fly off your face as you perishMiscellaneous trap adjustments and bug fixesA few more character creator optionsThe timer and death counter have been our most requested features, and we’ve finally added them. They will appear at the end of a run, as well as on the HUD if you enable them from the Settings menu. There was a large stretch of the first level that had no checkpoint between the one on the hill and the end of the level. Now we’ve added an additional checkpoint just before the tree-for-fall. Of course, while we want to make your lives easier, the trees still hate you, so there are a few more traps to offset any mercy. This is likely the last major demo update. Although we will still fix any problematic bugs that might appear, this is intended to be the final form of the demo, with any additional major updates saved for the full release.Steam June 2026 Next FestNext Fest is already halfway through, but with the weekend still ahead we wanted to share our excitement to be participating. Trees Hate You even got featured in the official Next Fest trailer!Between the recent updates and the Next Fest event, this is a great week to suffer through the demo, or convince a friend or family member to try it so you can laugh at their pain.

Localization, Palm Trees, and Palm Trees

Hello tree victims,We’ve been working to continue growing this game, and with many more eyes watching the game than we were expecting, that has meant taking a step back to ensure that our roots have been planted in fertile soil. But fear not, we’ve still got some seeds of information to share with you. First off, localization for several languages is up. While there is not much text in the game it’s important to us that we can get as much readable text for as many people as we can. After all, you never know when a sign might say something useful. In that effort the following languages have been added to the demo:GermanRussianFrenchSpanish (Spain and Latin America versions)Chinese (Simplified and Traditional versions)JapanesePortuguese (Portugal and Brazil versions)KoreanPolishUkrainianTurkishCzechItalianDanishFinnishDutchNorwegianSwedish Now we know many of you have been wondering what new trees might terrorize you in the full game. We've been adding a bunch, but today we'll share two:Palm Trees And Palm Trees? Both hate you. One of them is just a little less conspicuous about it. Follow the game if you’re excited to hear more, and we’ll update you in a few weeks with more duplicitous deciduous trees.

    Demo Out Now!

In time for the game's inclusion in the Wishlisted showcase, I'm excited to share a demo of Trees Hate You. Although many have already been sharing their playthroughs of a version of the demo that I put on Itch a while back, this is its first time being public here on Steam. The demo covers the first chapter of a horrible adventure. Design a character (or not), and then escape this awful forest while trying to avoid a variety of traps.Challenge ModeOne new thing with this Steam version of the demo is a Challenge Mode that you unlock after completing the demo normally. This challenge mode differs from a normal playthrough in a few ways:Every trap is out from the start, with no changes when you respawn.Certain randomized events are seeded so that they can play out in a more predictable way.Extra traps are sprinkled throughout the levels to make some maneuvers a bit harder.Overall, this should allow for a trickier, but fairer playthrough more ideal for things like speedrunning. What's Next?I'm sorry I don't have localizations ready yet. Right now the demo is only in English, so I'll try to add support for other languages soon.Besides that, I'll be focusing my attention back on the later chapters. I still have a lot more surprises planned, with new areas and trees to terrorize you in their own ways. I'm still not sure when exactly the full game will release. This project blew up way bigger than I could have imagined (Thanks everyone who has been sharing their early demo playthroughs, or recommending the demo to others), so I'll try to share more details about the plan going forward as soon as I can.

Now It's Personal: Introducing Character Customization

It's been about a month since the page went live for Trees Hate You. First off, I want to thank everyone who added the game to their wishlist. With 18 thousand wishlists already, I am blown away by the level of support for my silly little game about terrible trees. That support has made it easier during development to keep the momentum going, unlike this Sisyphean fellow:During this past month, I've continued adding more traps and features, but one thing I'd like to focus this post on, which some of you have been asking me for, is character customization.Design a VictimThe announce trailer featured only a bespectacled man (No, he's not based on anyone in particular). Although I left him in as a quick default option for those who just want to get straight to the game, you now get the choice to take a couple minutes and make your own personalized victim. There are options for eyes, mouths, hair, clothes, skin, and more. I had a lot of the system already built for a different project before I started working on Trees Hate You, but since then I've continued to add more options for both styles and colors, and I will keep adding more. (Yes, the UI is still kind of ugly. It's a WIP)I've also been adding more hats that you'll find throughout the forest. Some are maybe cool. Some are awful. No promises that every hat will survive the journey. What Next? Many of you have been asking about the release date, whether it's coming to consoles, and if there will be playtests. Unfortunately, I don't have any answers yet. But I have been working on a new demo that already feels close to ready, so hopefully I'll be able to share more about that soon.I'll probably post more updates like this about once per month, so you can follow Trees Hate You to stay in the loop whenever I have more to share.
