About this game

AFTERDEPTH is an exploration, survival, and technology progression game set in a post-apocalyptic underground world.

After a mysterious incident, all contact with Bunker 09 is lost. As Dr. Kellan, a researcher stationed in Bunker 08, you are tasked with investigating what happened. What begins as a routine emergency quickly unfolds into something far more disturbing.

Explore procedurally generated caves, restore abandoned infrastructure, and descend deeper into the unknown in search of the truth.

UNCOVER THE FATE OF THE BUNKERS

Investigate abandoned facilities, recover forgotten records, and follow the trail of evidence left behind by those who came before you.

Each bunker reveals another piece of a much larger mystery.

EXPLORE A PROCEDURALLY GENERATED UNDERGROUND WORLD

Traverse vast cave systems, discover hidden structures, gather rare resources, and venture into increasingly dangerous depths.

SURVIVE THE DEPTHS

Manage oxygen, power, and resources while navigating hazardous environments where cave-ins, falls, and suffocation are constant threats.

RESEARCH NEW TECHNOLOGIES

Scan resources, collect scientific data, and unlock new technologies through the research tree.

Upgrade your equipment and prepare for expeditions into deeper and more hostile regions.

BUILD AND EXPAND YOUR INFRASTRUCTURE

Restore abandoned bunkers, construct habitats, generate power, and produce oxygen to support increasingly ambitious operations.

AUTOMATE INDUSTRIAL OPERATIONS

Update 0.2.0 — Shaders, Workshop mods, and living caves

This is the biggest update in Afterdepth's history. Two big things arrive together: the entire game is now rendered with GPU shaders — the largest visual change since launch — and Afterdepth now has full mod support, with Steam Workshop. The shader migration started back in December. It was the longest thing I've ever built for this game, and it's only now finished. But it didn't stop there. The caves came alive too. A NEW GAME FOR YOUR EYES Rendering was moved entirely to the GPU, with shaders written specifically for this game. The difference is immediate: Water, lava and acid styled by shader. Liquids stopped being blocks of color: they gained depth, motion and edges of their own.Lava and acid actually light the room. The light map now runs on the GPU with emissive glow — a pool of lava on the floor lights up the entire cave.Soft shadows. Light occlusion went from a single ray to four rays spread across the source's disc. No more blocky shadow edges snapped to the grid: this is real penumbra.Rare minerals glint when light passes across them.Gas and haze with GPU-rendered clouds and a cutoff at breathable level. And as a direct consequence of the new lighting pipeline, a new chemical reaction: lava touching acid forms a dark volcanic glass with green cracks that pulse and emit their own light. It works both ways. Toxic vapor rises during the reaction. It's mineable, and drops Vitrified Rock. Alongside it came display calibration controls — brightness, contrast and gamma, with a guided test the first time you open the menu, so you can dial in the blacks on your monitor. MODS — FULL SUPPORT + STEAM WORKSHOP Afterdepth is now moddable end to end. Content as dataRecipes, items, materials and even biome bands became JSON files with named IDs. A mod that only adds a new item doesn't need a single line of code. And merging is per-entry: your mod declares only what it touches, without copying the rest. Lua scriptingA full sandbox: item-use hooks, a persistent update loop,...

Update 0.1.10 — Foundations of Industry

Hello, miners!Get your planning tools ready and calibrate your scanners. Update 0.1.10 for Afterdepth has just arrived, bringing the groundwork for what you have been asking for: the ability to build support structures and automate the extraction of heavy resources in the sand.Highlight: Your Own Industrial HabitatNo more relying solely on pre-existing structures. The biggest feature in this version is the introduction of the Habitat construction system, allowing you to build your own operational base on the sand.Construction Tool: Plan rooms, internal walls, and hatches using a dedicated alignment grid to validate the terrain. The Era of Automation: New machinery like the Excavator to clear terrain, Conveyor Belts, Ore Elevators, and Silos allow you to create a continuous flow of resources.Structures and Equipment: Install an Industrial Refinery, Construction Bench III, Research Station, a Clone Pod to set your respawn point, and much more.Highlight: Vein Mining in the SandManual mining has evolved. While you previously collected smaller chunks with your hand pickaxe, you will now have to deal with dense, heavy, and deep resources that require industrial machinery for extraction.Discovery and Extraction: Veins of magnetite, graphite, pitchblende, titanium, and O₂ crystals are now hidden beneath the surface. Use your Scanner to locate them and install the new Industrial Mining Machine on top.Automated Logistics: Connect heavy machinery directly to your logistics system (belts and elevators) to transfer production straight to your silos or refineries.Limited Resources: Stay sharp: veins actually deplete, and this extraction is permanent to your progress.Highlight: Bunker 09 Adjustments and OnboardingWe worked on making the game flow clearer and more direct during your first hours of exploration.Guided Progression: The mission to restore Bunker 09 now guides your steps much better. Bench Tier II and the elevator panel remain locked with clear visual and audio feedback ...

Afterdepth 0.1.9 — Research, base building, exploration

Version 0.1.9 greatly expands what you can do both inside and outside the base. The map is now wider, opening up more room for horizontal exploration, mining, and alternate routes through the cave. At the same time, this update starts pushing the game further into research-based progression, construction, and infrastructure, with a new Research Tree, portable power, new machines, oxygen production, acid refining, and structures that help you bring resources beyond the bunker walls. This update also brings important new survival and exploration features: Mach1, a companion robot that follows you and can carry items; the scanner, now tied more closely to research progression; and acid, a new environmental hazard that can also become a useful resource when processed correctly. Bunker 07 received a major overhaul as well, with new atmosphere, more detailed interior areas, oxygen points, toxicity, and a stronger narrative role in the journey.Update HighlightsResearch TreeThis update introduces a more complete Research Tree, with categories such as energy, structures, equipment, and exploration. Research uses research points, and some nodes may require previous research, available power-grid margin, or story progress before they can be unlocked. Highlights include research tied to energy efficiency, energy distribution, LSU capacity and output, inventory/carry upgrades, manufacturing progression, Mach1 upgrades, and new scanner stages. The goal is for progression to feel less like simply finding recipes and more like technological development happening inside your own base.Scanner and ExplorationThe scanner is now more connected to the Research Tree. It starts as an exploration tool, but can be improved through research such as Basic Scanner and Advanced Scanner, increasing its usefulness as the base evolves. When used on relevant points, the scanner gives feedback and can register certain deposits or objects found in the world. This reinforces the idea of turning explorat...
