Dev Diary #2: Districts & Splinters
Greetings! Welcome to the second dev diary for Divided Empire: Sengoku! Today we’ll take a deep dive into the game’s districts! The world map is divided into over 200 districts. These territories form the core of each clan; it is in the districts you recruit armies, construct buildings, upgrade castles, gather resources, and much more. Each district has its own "development", a value which determines the tax base, manpower pool, and how many buildings that can be built at their normal cost (if buildings exceed development level the cost is greatly increased). Development is dynamic and will change over the course of the game. In times of stability it will slowly grow, but it can also quickly decrease if a hostile army marches through, or unrest gets too high...Central Japan in development map-mode at game start (more green = higher development)Unrest can be caused by several factors, such as food shortages, raiding armies, and religious differences. It has many negative consequences, both directly for the districts affected, and for the clan controlling them. Additionally, unrest partially spreads to neighbouring districts, so if the clan next door is starving you will be affected as well – whether you like it or not.A famine is ravaging the north, causing massive unrest (more red = higher unrest)Districts also have modifiers which add further variation – the modifier "fertile land" causes farms to output more food, "Gold mine" gives extra income, "Rough terrain" increases construction costs and siege duration of the castle, etc. (check out dev diary #1 if you want more info about castles).Just because a district belongs to you does not mean you fully control it. Control is gradual; when a district is conquered it will have low control, greatly reducing the tax and manpower gained from it. To enjoy its full value both authority and time must be spent to increase the control, but doing so will also increase the admin ability needed to govern it. However, if a clan is ...Read full article on Community Announcements (Composition GS)AnnouncementsOfficial
Dev Diary #1: Castles
Greetings! Welcome to the first dev diary for Divided Empire: Sengoku! Today we’ll look into one of my favorite things about feudal Japan: the castles! The world map of DE:S is made up of “Districts”; geographic territories where you collect taxes, construct buildings, recruit soldiers, and much more. We will explore how districts work more in upcoming dev diaries, but for now we’ll focus on each district’s most important component: its castle.Castles are the core of territorial control in the game; the clan that controls the castle controls the district. Castles also block movement for hostile armies, so if it’s located in at choke point (which they often are) an invading army cannot pass without dealing with the castle first. Additionally they can hold one friendly army inside, protecting it from enemies. The castle of Okō controls the strategically important north-south passage on ShikokuAlthough castles bring many benefits to their owner, they might also need significant investment. Castles have levels (1-5), where higher levels increase the time it takes to siege them down, and adds more defensive units to its garrison. Upgrading requires gold, wood, and stone, and the cost might be further increased if the district’s terrain is unfavorable. They also have a small upkeep cost. The siege is nearing its end, but at what cost?So how do you conquer a castle? Well, there are two ways. Either you play it safe and starve out the defenders, or you try to assault the castle head-on. Starving out the defenders might seem like the obvious choice, but when an army enters hostile territory it suffers attrition over time. Because of this, long sieges can be very costly (especially if they drag on into winter), and thus you need to decide whether to wait or attempt a risky direct assault...Charge!If a castle is stormed, the game transitions into an RTS siege battle. Defenders have a significant advantage with gates, narrow approaches, and defensive towers. To win the battle, th...Read full article on Community Announcements (Composition GS)
