Master words through challenging boss fights and spaced repetition in FlashBoss. Choose from five starter packs to build your language skills, with full courses available for a comprehensive learning experience.
About this game
FlashBoss: Spaced Repetition and Boss Fights
FlashBoss is a study tool in RPG armor. To learn a language you need surprisingly few things. Trust that your effort won't be wasted, exposure to new language right at the edge of your comfort zone, periodic re-exposure to the material as it begins to fade from memory, and a reason to come back to your study desk, where the learning happens.
Speaking is a real-time strategy game; FlashBoss is the same game turn-based. You make the same moves — recall, build, answer — but with time to think.
The shape of the course
Complete language courses cover 3,000 of the most useful words in daily use, with high-quality text-to-speech audio on every card.
Included free: English Advance and English Adept
English Advance — don't get held back. Paperwork English: the forms, letters, appointments, and offices that run a life. Master the language that decides things — or take the full British layer as a brush-up before a season in the UK.
English Adept — become adept in English. For anyone with the quiet ambition to articulate themselves well: 1,000 words chosen for their cultural weight and their precision, to help you think clearly, speak clearly, and understand the world with a little more nuance.
German Core, Esperanto Core and the Toki Pona pack are also included free.
How FlashBoss teaches
Each card sets a target word in example sentences at your current level. Words come in thematic clusters, and every cluster is gated by a boss fight: win it and the cluster graduates — your deck gets smaller as you go. Your choice of master sets how much you study. The cluster bosses decide when you move on.
Free resources online
Free word lists and full lesson lists for every pack are online, with a sample of every voice and a playable boss-fight demo. Link in the right sidebar; the manual link opens the voice samples.
Two ways to play
Work the structured course at your master's pace — or skip the syllabus and just fight. Every tier you clear becomes a low-stakes boss rush, for unlimited review.
Bank days off
Once the day's work is done, you can use a magic spell to bring tomorrow's workload forward — but be careful.
Boss fights
Each cluster ends in a duel: one step forward for a correct answer, two steps back for a mistake. As you practice, your flashcards are ranked by difficulty. The first two spaces deal you your easiest cards, and the last two, the hardest. This means you cannot defeat a cluster without facing your biggest challenges.

Pronounce anything
FlashBoss ships its own neural text-to-speech engine, and it is not locked to the cards. Press Ctrl+P on any screen to open the pronounce window: paste in any text — a letter, a homework sentence, a word that scares you — and hear it spoken properly, or save the audio to keep. Use it as a read-aloud tool for anything you are studying.
Global keys: Ctrl+L — interface language · Ctrl+P — pronounce window · Ctrl+E — Esperanto word analyzer · A — audio on/off during review.
The packs
Five starter packs ship free:
English Advance — the practical English of adult life: forms, letters, the fine print. 500 words.
English Adept — sharper English for how you think, write, and speak. 1,000 words.
German Core — the first 1,000 words of German, including a cultural integration section.
Esperanto Core — one of the easiest languages to learn; 1,000 words goes far.
Toki Pona — the complete course in the world's smallest language. Learn it in a week; think in it for life.
Further FlashBoss content:
English Core — English as a foreign language for German, Japanese, Spanish, Chinese and Russian speakers: the first 1,000 words, fully playable in your language, with Pareto packs continuing to 3,000.
Latin Roots — build English vocabulary by recognizing the parts that make the whole. 1,000 words over 500 cards.
German Roots — the Germanic backbone of everyday English. 1,000 words.
Norman Roots — the French that arrived in 1066 and stayed. 1,000 words.
Greek Roots — the vocabulary of science, medicine and philosophy. 1,000 words.
Full 3,000-word courses in German, Spanish, French, Italian and Esperanto — beginner to advanced.
New releases every Thursday.
English text is American by default. The Voices: English (F) pack speaks British English and switches every English text field to British spelling by itself; prefer British text without the voice, and it's one setting away: Help & Options → Preferences → Language preferences → English spelling.
Developer Note
FlashBoss is a sanctuary for learning as much as it is a game. Most of the pleasure to be taken comes from learning the satisfaction of pattern recognition at your own pace.
FlashBoss is also a 'question' generator. When something specific puzzles you — why this case, why that word order, why the ending changed — this question will allow almost any AI to give you the exact answer you need, at a level you can understand, for 'to ask the right question is already half the solution.' — Carl Jung.

Latin Core is out: FlashBoss meets its first dead language
Latin, the first dead language Latin Core is live: the first thousand words of Latin, in the FlashBoss way — 20-word clusters, spaced repetition, a boss at the end of every cluster. We rehearsed the method on two constructed languages, Esperanto and Toki Pona, and learned how far it stretches. Latin is the first language with no living speakers to check us, and the answer is the same. Built to read Latin Core has one purpose: reading real Latin. It is the first 1,000 lemmas of a 2,000-word course — the vocabulary that carries you into actual sentences from the first tier, with grammar introduced step by step and example sentences that never use grammar you have not been taught. In the pack 1,000 high-frequency Latin lemmas across five tiers, in themed clusters Long vowels marked with macrons on every headword Translations and study notes on every card in English, German, Japanese, Russian, Simplified Chinese and Spanish 22 reference lessons — declensions, conjugations and core grammar, tier by tier — readable in the same six languages Every word and every example sentence spoken by a neural voice in Classical (restored) pronunciation Boss-fight graduation: no cluster is cleared until its hardest words are mastered Latin arrives speaking your language Study Latin through whichever of the six you call home: the translations, the study notes and the lessons are all there, on every card, from the first tier. Coming next Latin Pareto 1 — tiers 6 to 10, the second thousand — follows next week and completes the course. About the screenshots Our screenshots lag behind the game. If a pack's page lists a language in its description and its artwork, that language is in the pack, even where a screenshot has not caught up. Where a screenshot or the website disagrees with the description and the artwork, the description and the artwork are right.Read full article on Community Announcements (hedgeh)AnnouncementsOfficial
English Pareto 1 and 2 are released. New Russian Interface
English Pareto 1 and Pareto 2 are live — and will be discounted with all currently available FlashBoss content during the Autumn Sale. Russian joins as the sixth and final interface language. This is the third major announcement in two months — and the last of the Year of the Horse. Two English bundlesThe complete English course now comes as two editions at one price: the American English Bundle speaks the built-in American voice, and the British English Bundle adds the English (F) voice DLC, which turns every spoken and written word British.Latin — the real thing — this ThursdayLatin Core releases this week: a 1,000-word reading course in actual Latin, classical pronunciation, macrons on every headword, its own trained voice. Not to be confused with Latin Roots, which is an English vocabulary pack built from Latin parts. The next five ThursdaysThis Thursday — Latin CoreThen — Latin Pareto 1Then — Swahili CoreThen — Swahili Pareto 1Then — Swahili Pareto 2After that, you decide: Indonesian or Ancient Greek. Vote in the comments. The update cycle is finishedFlashBoss has been updating on a regular basis for the last six weeks, leading to frequent downloads. Thank you for your patience in the meantime. The biggest change of the cycle lives under the hood: FlashBoss now ships a GPL rebuild of Piper TTS, and on top of it we have begun training voices of our own. Our Esperanto and English (F) voices have been trained in house, as have our classical Latin and Swahili voices to come. Thanks to the Piper project, and to Mozilla and the volunteers of its Common Voice project, whose recordings teach these voices to speak. Hear them all on the voices page. The same engine drives the PiperTTS window: press Ctrl+P on any screen, paste any text, and hear it read aloud, or save the audio to keep.Bugs or content errors will be addressed promptly if reported at: the report page.Good luck to each of you with your learning endeavours,— Master OdiinRead full article on Community Announcements (hedgeh)AnnouncementsOfficial
French Pareto 2 is live — the French line reaches 3,000 words
French Pareto 2 is live. The last 1,000 words of the French line — Core, Pareto 1 and Pareto 2 now carry French out to 3,000 words. What is in it1,000 words across five tiers and forty clusters, each cluster closed by a boss fight. 566 of them are nouns, every one carried with its article and colour-coded by gender, so le and la are learned with the word instead of after it. Verbs, adjectives and 88 set expressions make up the rest. The notes start flagging register at this level: when a phrase is tu, when it is vous, when it is soutenu. It is the point in French where that begins to decide things. In your languageLike the rest of the French line, every card meets you in German, Japanese, Spanish or Simplified Chinese — translation, translated example sentence, and study notes. Or play the whole thing in English. The lessons come in all five.Pareto 2 follows Pareto 1. If you are starting French from nothing, French Core is the front door.Read full article on Community Announcements (hedgeh)AnnouncementsOfficial
Hear every FlashBoss voice before you buy
Every voice FlashBoss ships now has a sample on the website. One page, one real sentence from a real card per voice, read by the exact model and speed the game uses. Nothing recorded specially, nothing sweetened — if it sounds wrong there, it sounds wrong in the game. The two voice DLCs sit beside the voice they replace, saying the same sentence, so you can hear exactly what changes before you spend anything. English on glass, bottle and water; Spanish on gracias and perseverancia.Listen to all of them here — the walkthrough and the technical manual are one click from the same page.English Core is live. The first 1,000 words of English, played entirely in German, Japanese, Spanish or Simplified Chinese — cards, notes, lessons and interface.English Pareto 1 and 2 go live as soon as their store pages clear review.
