Devlog 4: What's cooking
Let's just get right into it. A preview! Here's a preview of what I've been cooking up. We're almost running out of things I'm willing to spoil, so there will probably just be one more preview video after this... A progress! https://solandtheendlessorbit.com/images/devlog4_char1.gif After the last devlog, I spent the next 3 months finishing up work on my comic and 1 month in a state of comic-induced burnout. During that time, I completed the first sailing segment (minus some polish and optional content), and the design of Chapter 1 (minus some things that connect to the other chapters, which will be worked out as I lock in my plans for the rest of the game), but that was basically it. But, good news! My comic is now done for the foreseeable future, which means as far as big projects go, there's nothing but game development on the horizon. And with most of the chapter designed, the last couple months have gone much better! I'm still a bit behind schedule, and I no longer think I'll be able to finish the chapter in 2026, but I'll try anyway. With pretty much all the previous obstacles out of the way and development going smoother than it ever has, I'm realizing that the main bottleneck on development at this point is just that I'm the only one doing it. So, here's what I'm thinking: when this first chapter is complete, I'll start some kind of crowdfunding campaign (Kickstarter, Indiegogo, etc.) to hire some people to speed up the next chapters. The thing about crowdfunding is that it requires a crowd, so it would be great if you could tell people about this game! And since it's been a couple devlogs since I've mentioned it, wishlisting here also helps a lot. I'll try to do my part and share more promotional stuff as well. Even if I fail to speed things up, though, I'm thinking about this game every day and constantly trying to improve its ideas, so the longer it takes, the better it'll be. I've been refining my plans and getting really excited about the story I want t...Read full article on Community Announcements (CoolGuyBug)AnnouncementsOfficial
Devlog 3: A glimpse of the Sunrise Isles
(If you're wondering about the title, I didn't post the previous 2 devlogs here because I didn't have a Steam page yet. You can find those here.) Today marks the one-year anniversary of the original Sol and the Endless Orbit prototype demo, which itself released on the five-year anniversary of the game's announcement. Seems about the right time for a devlog, wouldn't you say? First things first, though - if you're reading this, I think I can go out on a limb and say you probably don't hate reading these devlogs. And if you're anything like me, you also don't like having to check social media to keep up with things. So, I made a mailing list! Devlogs and major announcements will be dropped right into your email inbox. Join the mailing list, or you'll be on my failing list! (Don't worry, you'll only be a failure by my own subjective and very flawed standards, those being "not subscribed to the mailing list". And you'll be joined by roughly 8 billion people. And you probably won't make it on there anyway because I only have one sheet of paper.) With that out of the way, what's happened since last time? Between the stream I did for the 10th anniversary of my Scratch account (for which I made an entire video essay in preparation, plus multiple new Scratch projects) and personal Christmas projects, the end of 2025 didn't give me much time to work on the game. 2026, on the other hand...What I've been creatingInstead of talking about the progress I've made on this next area, why don't I show you? I wasn't sure if I wanted to show this yet, but it'll be hard to give updates on the rest of this chapter without touching on the sailing mechanic... Each chapter is a different adventure, but I wanted them to feel a bit like different games as well. So, with this one taking place on a tropical planet, a mix of platforming and sailing gameplay seemed appropriate. I actually started prototyping this mechanic while developing the demo update last fall! It was my first foray into Godo...Read full article on Community Announcements (CoolGuyBug)Patch NotesOfficial
