Alone in the park as The Darkness rises, Zak begins his descent. The Fox, The Forest and The Darkness is a narrative based game centered on that moment in life when we begin to build our own reality. Zak is confused, scared and angry like most 14 year olds, but he's determined to make it count.

Navigate Zak's tumultuous path as The Fox, The Forest & The Darkness challenges you to confront your own reality. Dive into an indie adventure where choices shape the story of a confused teenager determined to find his way.

About this game

Things have not been going well for Zak, in trouble at school, in trouble at home and now wondering what to do, where to go and who to be. Now he's stuck wandering the park doing homework on the weekend and frankly the whole thing is becoming a bit too much.

Then Zak discovers the fetid vines, his first sign of the growing Darkness in the woods and the dangers that wait for us all.

--

What's in the game?

  • Explore Southeast City Park discovering clues about Zak, his story and the reality he is building around himself. The Forest and The Darkness both call to Zak in their own unique ways.

  • Enjoy seamless transitions between 1st and 3rd person perspectives so you can really explore the clues to the mysteries that surround the Zak.

  • Experience a uniquely crafted story that eloquently melds the written word, music and visuals into a cohesive experience only a solodev / auteur experience can create.

  • Make use of curious game techniques like a story driven inventory system.

  • Although narrative based and story driven, the game doesn't bog you down with cutscenes and dialog sequences. The goal is for the player to feel free to move whenver possible.

  • An "audio book" format (as read by the author) is also provided but you can turn that off if you read faster than listen.

  • Several achievements are also scattered throughout the park (currently working on Steam integration).

---

The Fox, The Forest & The Darkness is the first project by Idea Guy turned Solodev Will Leamon. Here we present the first chapter "Enter Fickle Pig" as a means of hopefully raising interest and resources to keep on with the project.

    Summer Update

Hello Everyone, It’s summer time here in North Georgia so it’s unbearably hot and sticky. We’re hosting the World Cup down the way in Atlanta but up here in the woods you would never know. Y’all most welcome though and I hope everyone has a good time (and enjoy the AC!).It’s nice weather to stay indoors and work on a video game though, which I’ve been doing quite diligently. I have a certain number of hours a week I want to put in on the game and I’ve mostly been keeping up with that. I’ve also started to learn to play the piano. I figure at 51 years of age, it’s probably time. How hard could it be?* They teach it to six year olds*.So I’m just about half way done now, but that’s half way through a three year project. The goal is to have a beta out for testing in December (that’s a big hope) with a full release at the end of 2027. Then whatever the next NextFest is and after that some new game. Thanks for reading this, I’ll check in come Fall and COOL WEATHER.P.S. The garden is looking great, thanks for thinking of it. *VERY HARD.

    Spring Update

It's Spring Time!So here's an update on what's happening with The Fox, The Forest & The Darkness. In 2025 I thought I would make what they call a "vertical slice" of a game I wanted to make. Since I'm a solo dev with a family and a day job I thought I would use that slice to help find another dev who could help me finish the project.Well after a little research, and mostly listening to the folks from Hollow Knight / SIlksong, I am now terrified of indie-game publishers. Following their and many other folks' advice, I am going to continue to work on FFD myself and keep it right here on Steam for now. So what's next? The freaking awesome Hudson Avispon Nature Trail, that's what! More puzzles, more biting social commentary (I guess...), more freakiness from The Darkness and more sass from Cora. I'm also adding a stealth and dash components and we'll meet our first boss here soon enough. I'm hoping to have chapters 2 - 5 available this year and then hopefully finish the game outright in 2027. The TLDR is I find I really like working on the game and the meta (or outside) stuff, like marketing, self promotion, advertising - well that can just go hang, I'llfigure it out someday I guess. I hope you guys and gals (and everyone in between) like the game and keep playing because accroding to all the online know-it-alls, you'll be the only ones lol! One more thing, I post more (mostly silly) stuff on the game's website www.706gaming.com

    Winter Update

The first major update for The Fox, The Forest & The Darkness is now live!Featuring:A GRAPHICS SETTINGS MENU!Currently a bit bugged as it always says "1920 x 1080" but the resolution does change.CONTROLLER SUPPORTI only have an Xbox controller, but should be ok for any controller since nothing fancy happening here.Bug: The mouse pointer can be a bit haywire at times. Use the D-pad (watch the blue highlight).SWEET, SWEET OPTIMIZATIONSI won't bore you with the details, but I pulled a bit of an ArcRaiders and reduced the file size by more than half.

    Welcome Everyone

Hey Friends,The Fox, The Forest & The Darkness is a solo dev project by me, Will Leamon. I'm releasiing Chapter 1: Enter Fickle Pig on December 2nd more as a big bold beta test. I could really use your help! Please feel free to use the community features, forum in particular, to let me know how your play goes and of course let me know of any and all bugs you run into. It's been a crazy year for me working on this project and to be honest I started my dev journey as a musician in game jams, moved on to environment design and then suddenly found myself obsessed with exploring every facet of making a game. I honestly don't know what came over me, but I am aboslutely amazed and joyful to be here and frankly stupefied that you are too! Thank you so much.I hope you enjoy Chapter 1 and let me know what your thoughts are as I continue to update chapter 1 and slowly begin the work on Chapter 2.
