August Update: Cyberpunk Fest is here, and so is the Demo Update
Hey everyone!Quick one today. Match Morphosis is officially part of Cyberpunk Fest, Steam's very first one, running August 3rd through the 10th. Also dropped some new key art for the store page, figured the festival was a good excuse to give the game a fresh look. Go check it out.If you've been on the fence about trying the demo, this is a good excuse to jump in too, it's live now on the store page. For anyone new here from the festival: Match Morphosis is a match-3 where every match is also a combat move, built into a full roguelike run structure. If that sounds like your thing, give the demo a shot.Being part of a first-year festival is a bit of an unknown for everyone involved, but it felt like the right moment to get the game in front of more people. If you play it, feedback is always welcome, here, in the Discord, or wherever's easiest. And if you enjoy it, a review goes a long way in helping the game get seen by more players.See you in the festival.https://discord.gg/PXDWcuPtWx~ ErnesRead full article on Community Announcements (ernesernesto)Patch NotesOfficial
July Update: Perks are here, and a whole lot of gameplay balancing
Been a busy few weeks again, so let's get right into it. Perks are finally in!I know, I know, I said "more on that soon" like two updates ago. Well, soon is now. Perks are a per-run pickup that also differ per character, meaning the perks you see and choose from will lean into what that character "build" is. The idea here is to make synergy planning easier. Instead of hoping the run throws you the right pieces at the right time, perks give you a clearer thread to pull on and plan your build around from the start.I'm genuinely excited for you all to try this one. It changes how a run feels to plan out, not just how it plays. The upgrade tree is now changed, it got smarter (because you all got too good)Here's the thing about giving players more tools to build with: some of you found the "best" path way too fast, and once that happens, everyone just funnels toward it. Not fun for anyone, including me watching it happen. So based on a lot of the feedback I got, the "upgrade" tree has been reworked so it doesn't just hand you the optimal strategy on a silver platter. There's more branching, more tradeoffs, and fewer "obviously correct" picks. I want you thinking about what fits your run, based on what you get in the run.Localization is comingThis has been on my mind for a while. The game's got players from all over, and I want more of you to be able to enjoy it in your own language. I'm working on Korean, Japanese, and Simplified Chinese localization now. If any of you are fluent and want to help make sure it actually reads well (not just "technically translated but weird"), I'd love the help. Come find me in the Discord if you're interested. A ton of bug fixesNothing flashy to show here, just a lot of quiet fixes under the hood. Some of these came straight from stuff you all reported, so thank you for that, keep it coming. Window resolution settingsFinally a way to change your window resolution in game. Small thing, but annoying if you want something better to fit your ...Read full article on Community Announcements (ernesernesto)Patch NotesOfficial
June Update: New Name, New Matching System, and a Bunch of New Content
Hey everyone!A few things to cover this time around, so let me just get into it.The game has a new nameMatch Morphosis is now Match Morphosis: Match-3 Roguelike. Not a dramatic change, but an intentional one. The old name told you nothing about what kind of game this is before you clicked on it. Someone browsing Steam who has never heard of it would have no idea if it was a puzzle game, a narrative game, or something else entirely. Adding the subtitle means the moment it shows up in a search or a list, people already know what they are getting into. It should help the right players find it more easily, which is the whole point.Matching has been reworkedThis is the bigger one.Previously, matching was limited to pieces of the same type. That put a hard ceiling on how many different pieces you could realistically run in a single build before things started working against each other. Ideally a 8x8 board of match-3 has a maximum of 5 different type to match in order to make the match still satisfying and juicy, previously with 7 maximum types, every time player add a new piece it almost feels like making the game harder. That ceiling is gone now. Matching is now based on category, differentiate by color and shape (5 in total, which "accidentally" coincides with the amount of forms you could use :D), which means you can match across types! A lot more combinations become valid, and more importantly, there is no longer a limit on how many different pieces you can bring into a run. If you want to run a wide board with a ton of variety, the game will not punish you for it the way it used to, and making the match still feels satisfying. This one change opens up a lot of build space. I am genuinely curious what you all come up with.New piecesAlongside the matching rework, there are a ton of new pieces added to the pool. More options to play around with, more things to discover, more ways to find a combo that feels completely broken until the game reminds you it is not.New enemy ...Read full article on Community Announcements (ernesernesto)Patch NotesOfficial
May Update: Demo Success, Optimizations, Some Big Gameplay Changes for 0.0.61
Hey everyone! It's been a few weeks since the demo dropped, and honestly, the response has been pretty cool to see.Since launch, the game picked up almost 250 new wishlists. That's people who actually played the demo and decided they wanted more of it, which feels way more meaningful than a random click. The average playtime is sitting ~1 hour, so yeah, people are actually staying and playing. That's all I really wanted. One small bummer though. The game didn't qualify for the Deckbuilders Festival on Steam. Their call was that it doesn't have enough deckbuilder aspect to it. Bit of a tough one to hear, but oh well. The game is what it is, and people seem to be enjoying it, so we keep going. Yeah I made above image to grief.. Some midsized streamers also picked the game up on their own, which was awesome to watch. Got a ton of useful feedback just from observing how they played and where things got confusing or satisfying. Really appreciate everyone who gave it a go on stream!Also... the game is now 30mb installed. After the demo launch I finally had time to do an optimization pass on the asset pack. 30mb, down from 130mb. Smaller than most empty Unity project. #notmadewithunityNow for the bigger stuff. Some of the feedback I got had genuinely interesting reasoning behind it, and it pushed me to make some real changes to how the core gameplay works. These are not small tweaks, these are things I think will matter in the long run.Piece Weights are now visiblePieces on the board now have weights that show how likely they are to spawn. Higher weight means you'll see it more. This was always happening under the hood, but now it's transparent to you as a player. You can now Skip pieces and RerollWhen you encounter a new piece during a run, you can skip it. This means you can keep your board small and focused, working with fewer tile types if that's your strategy. But there's a catch. Skipping a piece means missing out on something the game gives you when you actually upgrad...Read full article on Community Announcements (ernesernesto)AnnouncementsOfficial
