Devlog August: Museum Management, Town and Field Guide Animals!
Hey everyone!Time for another update from the team to keep you up to speed on our progress. It's been such a fun last couple months but also quite challenging from a technical perspective. We've managed to tackle some really tough tasks and we're very happy with how things are going. Our primary goal was to complete the basic gameplay loop consisting of the following:1.) Going on an expedition and collecting fossils.2.) Returning to the museum and setting up exhibits.3.) Having a basic visitor phase to get visitors to see your exhibits.4.) Ending the day and earning moneyWe managed to get this all set up and working which really felt awesome. Playing the 'game' for the first time and seeing it all come together was super satisfying and a big milestone for us.Museum Management In order to manage your museum we needed to build a number of features around managing your dioramas, exhibits and display cabinets. So, say hello to the new museum manager menu! We had to build quite a tricky menu system that works well on both mouse and controller. It still needs a bit of work from a polishing perspective but we're very happy with this iteration and how it works. Our next major task we needed to tackle was actually placing your exhibits in the museum. This also needs to work well on controller as well as mouse and keyboard. We also had to figure out how different rooms in your museum are handled visually and how these rooms would get unlocked. These two components were very challenging for us not only from a technical perspective but also trying to design them in a way that was as simple to use as possible even when the underlying mechanics are quite complex. There are so many different components that have to work together here and they need to feel as seamless as possible for the player. Please keep in mind that the assets we share are still very much work in progress. As time progresses and we get deeper into the project we'll be constantly iterating and adding polish and ju...Read full article on Community Announcements (niminy)AnnouncementsOfficial
Diorama Exhibits Reveal🦖 & Wholesome Direct!
One of the most requested features in our feedback form was to be able to have more than one dinosaur on an exhibit stand and to be able to set them in different poses. Honestly the first time we got the request we thought that would be awesome but probably not possible. But we thought about it a bit more and decided it was a feature worth investing in! We took it one step further and added some extra features: Set your exhibit stand to different shapes and sizesChange the colourChoose an environment Biome!Add as many dinosaurs as your heart desires (or as many as you can get on the stand)Choose from a selection poses for your dinosaurs or create your ownDecorate with a host of plants, rocks, grass and treesMany of the plants we included are prehistoric plants too, so you can match your dinosaurs to the habitat they use to live in if that's something that floats your dinosaur nerd boat. It certainly floats ours! We're so happy that this feature got requested. It was fun to work on and honestly it's just a really good idea that makes such a great addition to the game. (Our players are so smart! We have the best players!) We've been keeping this a secret which has been TOUGH but all got revealed during the Wholesome Direct Showcase, which we are thrilled to be a part of. If you didn't catch the showcase live you can still watch it on Wholesome Games youtube channel. There are some amazing games that are part of the event and you can check them all out on the steam event page: https://store.steampowered.com/sale/WholesomeDirect2026If you have thoughts on the Diorama Exhibit feature or want to chat to us about anything else, pop into our discord. I wonder which requested feature we will build next 😉Lots of love from the team, Romy & LasseRead full article on Community Announcements (niminy)AnnouncementsOfficial
Dev Log May: New Mechanics! New Mini Games! and Wholesome Direct!
Hey Everyone!I can’t believe it’s already been 3 months since Romy and I started production full time on Fossil Quest. We wanted to thank you all for the overwhelming support we’ve received from over 650 000 people who played the prototype on either Itch or GX.games. We also got over ONE HUNDRED responses to our feedback form which has really helped us figure out what to focus on, what to improve and potentially what new mechanics and features to add. We’ve also added the lovely Kate Munro to the team who will be assisting with 3D modeling, concept art and making beautiful things to put into the game.Without all of you, this project of ours would never have been possible. So a big thank you to everyone. To be honest, there is so much that we’ve done over the last 3 months so this little devlog might not cover absolutely everything we’ve accomplished. But I’ll do my best! But… before we dig into it (pun intended), we have a little piece of good news! We’re in WHOLESOME DIRECT! What the heck.Fossil Quest was accepted into Wholesome Direct!! This is an incredible opportunity and experience for us and we’re beyond excited. The showcase is on the 6th of June so come check it out to see some really awesome games. We also have a big announcement coming where we reveal our new feature we’ve been working on, so keep an eye out for that too!Ok lets get back to the dev log…Figuring it all outOne of the big things we’ve had to do is figure out exactly where we want to go with this game, what kind of experience we want players to have and what emotions to invoke. All that said, we have some core pillars of what we want to deliver. We want to make a game that:Is faithful to paleontology, natural history and paleontological processes. Is relaxing, calming and stress free.Teaches players about natural history and paleontology in a way that is fun and not jammed in your face.Has a bit of grinding, but not too much. It’s not Elden Ring. Find a nice balance here.Using these pillars as ou...Read full article on Community Announcements (niminy)AnnouncementsOfficial
Thank you for the 10k wishlists! And a little bit of other news 🦕
Hello Fossil Questers, It's been a productive couple of months for our little team and we've hit a very big milestone.. We hit 10 000 wishlists! Is this a dream? Some error in the Steam backend?! Somebody pinch us!! We really can't believe we have already hit the big 10k milestone. Without a demo release or a big showcase feature even! All this support has come mostly from people who played the prototype on itch or GX Games (check it out here if you haven't already: https://unsigneddoublecollective.itch.io/fossil-quest) and we really can't thank you all enough for coming over to Steam and wishlisting the project. Wishlists help in so many ways, especially for a tiny team like us. These wishlists numbers helped us to secure a little bit of extra funding to support development so the full game of Fossil Quest is looking very secure - All thanks to you! We were also in our first Steam festival - #Relaxing fest. This definitely gave the game a little boost and it was nice looking through all the other relaxing games that took part. We made a little round up of our favorites here: Relaxing Fest - Favourite Games! So, what else is happening?! We have been working on new digging mechanics, designing how the new dig site locations work and look, updating our UI, doing lots of concept work and making new mini-games. We will be posting a BIG dev log update at the end of next month with all that and the last 3 months progress so you can see a proper deep dive into what we've been cooking up. This is just a little sneak peak: How cute are these little shrubs? Some environment look development happening New digging movement mechanics in the works! Can you tell what this is?? One of my favourites! If you have any questions you are always welcome to email us or pop in to the discord to chat. Lots of love, Romy and LasseRead full article on Community Announcements (niminy)AnnouncementsOfficial
